Our Vision: Galway Elementary School will empower students
to be valued, productive members of a global society.
Principally Speaking: “Teacher Appreciation”
Every day in schools across the country, including Galway, teachers touch the lives of millions of children, and their work and impact extends beyond the classroom. I want to thank families for making last week special for teachers. I know our teachers’ commitment to student learn-ing and it extends well beyond their hours on the job. Thank you for all of the tokens of love expressed this week to staff. A special thanks goes out to the PTA for their continuous support for school staff and school programs. It is our goal as a school to partner with parents to help students reach their potential academically and socially. Enjoy this poem that exemplifies that partnership.
Whose Child Is This?
-(Author Unknown) "Whose child is this?" I asked one day
Seeing a little one out at play "Mine", said the parent with a tender smile
"Mine to keep a little while To bathe his hands and comb his hair
To tell him what he is to wear To prepare him that he may always be good
And each day do the things he should"
"Whose child is this?" I asked again As the door opened and someone came in
"Mine", said the teacher with the same tender smile "Mine, to keep just for a little while
To teach him how to be gentle and kind To train and direct his dear little mind
To help him live by every rule And get the best he can from school"
"Whose child is this?" I ask once more Just as the little one entered the door
"Ours" said the parent and the teacher as they smiled And each took the hand of the little child
"Ours to love and train together Ours this blessed task forever."

to the environment in order to support our informative and
opinion writing. We will ask and answer question about key
details and use various text features to locate key facts or

the environment? We will gather information and compose an
informative paragraph with a topic sentence, details, and a sense
of closure.
Math: This month we are learning about 2 and 3-dimensional
shapes and their attributes. We will draw 2-dimensional shapes
based on their attributes (e.g., rectangles, squares, trapezoids,

SPOTLIGHT ON ACADEMICS Our Thinking and Academic Success Skills
(TASS) for Marking Period 4 are:
FLEXIBILITY -Being open and
responsive to new and diverse ideas
and strategies and moving freely
among them
INTELLECTUAL RISK TAKING -
Accepting uncertainty or
challenging the norm to reach a
goal
READING: Students will begin exploring
literary nonfiction by reading
autobiographies, biographies, and
memoirs. Students will summarize text in
writing and orally using key details to
determine main idea, compare and
contrast first and secondhand accounts,
and explain how an author uses reasons
and evidence to support particular
points. Students will integrate
information from two literary nonfiction
texts, pose and respond to specific
questions, and identify the reasons and
evidence a speaker provides to support
particular points.
WRITING: Students use their research to
draft an introduction and body
paragraphs. Students evaluate their
writing for coherence by logically
organizing and supporting points and
demonstrating command of language.
Students develop ideas with facts from
research, revise for coherence based on
peer conferences, and edit their writing
for complete sentences and sentence
fluency. As a part of publishing writing,
students create feature articles to share
their selected research topic.
SCIENCE: Students will explore fossils to
see how the fossils of organisms provide
insight into organisms and environments
of the past. They will examine fossils to
learn about the evidence that fossils
provide about the plants, animals, and
the environments in which they lived on
Earth’s surface long ago. Students
identify the relationship between the
formation of rocks and fossils as further
evidence of Earth’s changing surface over
time
Fifth Grade
We’re nearing the final stretch, 5th grade families!
In reading, students will be analyzing authors’ points
of view in various informational texts. As always,
students will be learning reading strategies that will
support them when reading a variety of texts.
Students are following a series of lessons in order to
write their own personal memoirs. One memoir from
each class will be chosen by the 5th grade teachers
to be read at the 5th grade promotion ceremony.
We are continuing on with decimals this month! We
have been applying multiplication strategies and
place value reasoning to multiply decimals and will
move into division of decimals. We will teach these
concepts through the use of word problems and
reasoning. We will tie these skills in with
measurement in the customary and metric systems.
Finally, we will end the marking period with
coordinate graphing, geometry, and algebra! *Please
continue to support students in studying
multiplication and division facts at home!
In science, we are studying cells and heredity by
examining the characteristics of plant and animal
cells using microscopes. Family Life and Human
Sexuality and Disease Prevention and Control
instruction will begin this month, as well! Please
submit the permission form if you have not done so
already.
In social studies, our focus is on economics. We will
examine how goods and services in Maryland have
evolved due to the impact of technological changes.
This will lead us into financial literacy and financial
decision making (spending, saving, & sharing).
