Allpupilswill followthecommoncurriculumofEnglish,EnglishLiteratureandMathematics.PupilswillselectanumberofadditionalGCSEsubjectsfromtheoptionsblocksasindicatedinthesubjectchoiceletter. GCSE‘Twilight’Courses Pupils may have the opportunity to enroll on one of the ‘twilight’ GCSE courses that run inconjunctionwithotherLisburnschoolsanddeliveredbySERC,usuallyattheirmaincampusinCastleStreet.Anumberofpupils inYear11 thisyearare following twilightGCSEcourses inPhotographyand Engineering. They run one afternoon per week throughout Years 11 and 12 and usually aretimetabledfromabout3.45–5.45pm. FurtherdetailsonwhichcourseswillbeavailableatSERCwillbeconfirmedlaterintheyear.

ArtandDesign TheschemeofassessmentinArtandDesignrequirescandidatestosubmit: Unit1: CorePortfolio 60% Unit2:Workingtoastimulus 40% Coursework Unit1: CorePortfolio ThePortfolioismadeupfromeditedworkshowingthebreadthanddepthofarangeofexperiencesusingdifferentmediaandmaterials. IntheirPortfoliocandidatesshouldincludeonetaskthatisfullyrealized.Thereshouldalsobeevidenceofabroadandcreativerangeofexperiencesinboth2and3dimensionsinfineart,craftanddesign. ExternallySetAssignment Unit2: Workingtoastimulus Candidatesareexpectedtoproduceafinishedpieceofworkinresponsetoeitherasetthemeoragivenquestion.ThepaperisdistributedinJanuaryallowingforapreparatoryperiod.Asupervisedtimeof10hoursisgiveninwhichtoproducethefinaloutcome.Pupilsarepreparedforthisbyworkingontheportfoliooverthetwoyears.Duringthecoursetheywillbeintroducedtoabroadrangeofmaterials,mediaandprocesseswhichmayincludedrawing(pencil,pastels,inks);painting;variousformsofprinting(screen,mono);lensbasedmediaincludingphotography;filmandanimation;ceramics;textilesincludingembroidery;batikandfelting;modelingwithwire/papermache/card/plasterandcomputeraideddesign. Ideasmaybedevelopedintooneofmanyareasincludingpainting;sculpture;ceramics;jewellery;interiordesign;fashion;textiles;lensbasedandgraphics. Duringthecoursethepupilswillhavecontactwithartists,designersorcraftspeopleeitherthroughvisitingspeakersorbyattendingexhibitionsorworkshops. Oncompletionofthecoursethecandidateassemblestheirworkintheformofanexhibition.Theclassteachermarksthecomponents.ThisisthenmoderatedbyanexternalmoderatorappointedbytheExaminationCouncil. Forpupilsintendingtofollowthiscourseithelpstohavealivelyimagination,goodtechnicalskills,awillingnesstoexperimentandalotofenthusiasm.

They will apply their developingknowledgeinarangeofrelevant,enjoyableandworkrelatedcontextswhilstdevelopingtheircriticalthinkinganddecisionmakingskills. InUnitOnetheywillexplorethebackgroundtothemodernmediaanddifferingroleswithinit.TheywillalsodevelopjournalisticskillsandexploretheroleofPublicRelationsinarangeofcontexts.
