A company known for rails has its startin a basement, and also produces a prod-uct that plays off a day made famous on alegendary television comedy.
Wagner Companies is located at10600 Brown Deer Road and employsapproximately 150 people.
“We’re a Milwaukee-based manufactur-er, (and) it’s a family business,” WagnerCompanies Executive Vice President TonyLeto said in a recent interview.
The official legal entity is R & BWagner, Inc., and it is named after Robertand Barbara Wagner, who are the childrenof company founder Adolph Wagner.Robert and Barbara Wagner are still withthe company.
“We like manufacturing in Milwaukee, and we enjoy doing that. We like producingas much as we can rather than importing it,”Leto said.
The company’s Web site states thatWagner “manufactures and stocks standardproducts for metal fabricators and producescustom products — primarily for handrails.”
The company is comprised of three divi-sions: architectural catalog, architecturalcustom and Wagner Industrial.
“What people know us for is metal com-ponents for railings — custom and stock,”Leto said.
The history of the Wagner family in themetals industry dates back to 1850, when Julius Wagner s tarted a blacksmith shop in
Buffalo, NY. Wagner moved to Milwaukeein 1870 and started an iron shop.
What is now Wagner Companiesbegan to take shape in 1955 when AdolphWagner began working on products in hisbasement, designing approximately 40products, including two sizes of elbows, flanges and connectors.
“Today those forty-some products havegrown into 11,000 catalog items,” the com-pany’s Web site states.
Leto explained that while AdolphWagner created the products, he didn’thave the manufacturing capacity, so he out-sourced the manufacturing to his designs. He eventually bought the company thatmade the parts, Advance Stamping Co.“The original designs are still with us.We still make parts he designed in 1955,”Leto said.
Leto said the company has a very goodreputation for quality and has been in themetal railing industry for a long time.
“We tend to maintain our quality andour flexibility,” he said.
Over the years the company purchasedother firms, which were joined into one firmin 2001, and Wagner Companies movedall its operations into the Brown Deer Roadfacility in 2002.
Leto explained that the process of cre-ating railings involves bending and weld-ing, but how it is done has changed throughadvances in technology in both the engi-neering and the equipment that is more pro-grammable in terms of bending and layingout the railings.
“It’s basically bending and welding, it’sjust how you get more efficient doing it,”Leto said.
The company has an internationalreach, selling products in the Canada,United Kingdom, Australia, and SouthAfrica. He said that while the company willgo to international trade shows, it will be
there to support local distributors sellingtheir products.“Certain products we have are patent-
ed and proprietary so we sell thethe world,” Leto said.
In 2008, the company souattained ISO certification. Leto that ISO is a system that certifieny has processes in place for mquality that are followed. He expWagner does business for contr
manufacturers.

The filling of a onetime gravel quarry onScenic Road in the village of Richfield will goahead without any local approvals, thedeveloper of a site said in a statement issuedMay 13.
Danah Zoulek, member of Scenic Pit,LLC, issued a statement stating their attorneynotified the village of Richfield counsel thatthey intend to fill the pit “without further seek-ing local approvals.”

Members of the Germantown PlanCommission got a first look last week at aconcept for apartments on Main Street eastof the Lake Park condominiums and west ofthe Oakwood Village condominiums.
The request from JBJ Development wason the May 11 commission agenda for con-sultation regarding a potential site plan andrezoning regards to the possible develop-ment. JBJ is proposing a 225-unit apartmentcomplex.
According to information from villagePlanning and Zoning Administrator JeffRetzlaff, the item was before the commis-sion for consultation. The developmentwould include a community clubhouse andswimming pool and 447 parking stalls pro-posed, of which 235 would be in under-ground parking. Driveway access to theproposed development would be fromMain Street on the north.
Retzlaff said during discussion with thedeveloper, village staff wanted at least tworoad connections in the development. Hesaid Main Street and Hilbert Lane are themost logical and are supported by villagestaff.
Retzlaff said the area would have torezoned. In addition, density, buildingscale, and connections to Hilbert Lane andCastle Drive would have to be discussed.
Several residents spoke out against theproposal at the start of the meeting.
Scott Bence of JBJ Development said hehas been involved with trying to developthe property since 1996. He said the con-cept plan was put together “in hopes to cre-ate some opportunities for the village.”
Commission member Mary Ellen Graycited a development in Virginia with retailand mixed housing uses. Of the conceptbefore the commission, she said “I couldnever vote for this” citing the impact itwould have on the local school district.
“There just is no place at this point (forstudents) in the school system,” Gray said.“The last referendum was not passed inGermantown. That’s up to other peoplethan me, but I don’t see how you can votethis number of apartments in without deal-ing with where those kids are going toschool.”
Gray suggested storefronts with hous-ing units above them. However, Bencereplied there is vacant retail space in otherareas of Germantown at this time. Bencesaid the overall density of mixed use devel-opments in other portions of the country is“ten times what we have here.”
“It won’t work, it just won’t work here,”Bence said of a mixed retail and residentialconcept.
Commission member and VillageTrustee David Baum agreed, saying “retailwill not work there.”
Commission member Tony Laszowskisaid the area “almost has to be residential. The question I struggle with is density.”
Bence cited data which indicates thattheir developments in the area average“half a school age child per dwelling unit.”
Commission member Bill Shadid saidBence would have to address increasedtraffic that residents along Hilbert Lane andother nearby roads would experience.
“I think you’re asking a lot for thatneighborhood,” Shadid said.
Bence replied that he knew going to thework for the project that road access would
be a key issue, due to what is already there.Bence noted he contacted residents to letthem know about the meeting. He notedthat the company has sought to addresspotentially contentious issues.
“We’re committed to Germantown. Wewant to provide amenities that other peopledon’t necessarily care about,” Bence said.
Village Board President Dean Woltersaid developers would have to address the
impact of the development on scpresence of a third floor on sounits, the density of the developmtraffic study as part of the devel
Baum added that 225 units much from my perspective, I wsee that density lower.” He alswould want to see two-storyinstead of three story buildings.
