Girlsneedrock‘n’rolemodelsROCK chicks TheCassettez are aboutto unleash their debutsingle — for the deadand the undead.

The Glasgow bandrelease party track Zom-bie Disco today.

And the chilling videosees the girls rocking apacked crowd of flesh-eatingreanimated corpses.

Lead singer Bex Lappingsays: “We put the video upand people went crazy overit. I think it’s because zom-bies are big right now.”

But the group are morethan just a novelty act.

They’re determined toshow that girls can rock ashard as blokes.

Bex explains: “I respectgirl groups like Girls Aloudand The Saturdays.

“But for me, I can’t relateto that perfect type of girl,all tanned and airbrushed.

“And I feel a lot of younggirls can’t as well.

“So if you look at us,we’re just a bunch of nor-

mal girls. Hopefully, we canshow young girls don’t haveto be this perfect image —they can just be themselves.

“Sometimes young girlscome up to us and go ‘Ididn’t know girls could playelectric guitar and rock outon stage like that’.

“The genre we are in, it’svery male-led.

“I feel a lot of peoplehave seen us and realisedyou don’t need to be a guyto do it.

‘Chasing dream’“Your gender doesn’t make

any difference.“We perform more like

guys, that why we all wearsuits — it’s a tongue incheek thing.”

The band is based inGlasgow but Bex is fromSunderland while Melissa,Nia and Sian are all Welsh.

Bex adds: “Scotland ishome for us as a group.

“We’re working on ouralbum. It’s got punk onthere, some ska, someslowed-down pop.

“We want to see howZombie Disco goes first. If

it does well, we’ll releaseanother single and then gofor it with the album.”

Oddly the band have aunusual celeb fan club.

It includes rapper FatmanScoop and zany twins Jed-ward.

Bex says: “I’ve no ideahow Fatman heard us, buthe sent us a video saying hereally liked our stuff.

“I absolutely love him, soit’s crazy that he’s into theband.

“And Jedward went madfor us too. We played andthey were going crazy at theside of the stage all thetime we were on.”

But for now, it’s just aboutgrafting away.

Bex says: “When we’re inGlasgow, we’re worked tothe bone. We can be in thestudio for up to 16 hoursstraight. Sometimes we dothree gigs in one day.

In the case of Kelvin, they’ve hit the groundrunning with their first single Punching Bag.A wonderfully infectious slab of melodicindie rock, it’s the perfect calling card for aband destined for big things.

Frontman Connor McGlave told me:“Punching Bag was one of the first songs wewrote together as Kelvin. It was one of thoseones where you know instantly it’s a singleupon listening to the demo. It has sinceturned into a massive anthemic indie tunethat sets the tone for what’s to come. The EPas a whole is all about hard-hitting tunes thatgrab you from the very first listen.”

The good news, having heard a bunch ofdemo tracks, is that there’s a wealth of greatmaterial to be unleashed.

Previously known as Stolen Sound, theyplayed their first gig as Kelvin supportingDarlia at King Tut’s in Glasgow in February.

Kelvin have already caught the attention ofSimple Minds legend Jim Kerr, who postedon Facebook: “Always like hearing goodnew music, particularly when it comes from

our hometown. Kelvin are the latest to catchmy attention and I look forward to seeingthem live. Cool guitars aplenty!”

Kerr isn’t the only big name getting behindKelvin. The EP was recorded in Ireland withStereophonics producer Jim Lowe. Jim’sother credits include Taylor Swift, The Char-latans, Nick Cave and Foo Fighters.

Kelvin round off their current batch ofdates with a London gig on October 31, andhope to announce a big Scottish headlinedate soon.
