In the past, the needs of farmers as well
as dairies, meat processing and consum-
ers have been changed. the animals
have to be inconspicuous and they have
to fulfil a high lifetime production respec-
tively they need to have good fattening
characteristics as for example a high net
increase on a daily basis. at the same
time they have to use the
valuable feeding stuff low-
loss for the milk- and meat
production.
beside high-quality produc-
tion, nowadays sustained
economic activity will be
demanded from the cattle
farmers. this includes the re-
duction of carbone dioxide-
output of the animals as well
as a reduced use of antibiot-
ics and hormone.
the efficiency index
the value „efficiency“
describes the energy re-
quirement which is alto-
gether needed for the performance. the
total span of an animal’s life will be taken
into consideration and the absorbed
energy amount will be compared with the
overall produced performance.
Regarding the female Fleckvieh-animals,
the focus lies on the milk production,
while for the male animals the focus lies
on the meat production. For cows, the
per cent value will be calculated of differ-
ent breeding values and characteristics.
the most important categories are milk
production, longevity, fertility and body
weight. Regarding the milk production,
also fat and protein will be taken into
consideration. on the male side, the
dedicated energy effort, which will be
needed in order to reach the slaughter
weight, will be considered. the offspring
of a bull with a high efficiency value is
most likely to achieve a higher perform-
ance despite the same energy need.
the efficiency indices will be expressed
in per cent.
the higher the value, the more efficient
is the animal. Normally, for breeding bulls
the value is between 0 and 10%.
the health-value
For dairy cattle farmers
who want to optimize the
processes within their
business, health is the most important
breeding goal. the herds are constantly
growing which at the same time means
that there is less time available for the
individual animal.
In order to increase the amount of easy
to manage cows, CRV has developed
the health index, which also has been
introduced during the current index run.
the health index will also be expressed
in per cent and it describes the decrease
of occurring diseases. udder healths,
fertility, the calving process (paternal and
maternal) as well as the rate of stillbirths
build the base for this index. Due to the
use of bulls with a high health
index, farmers get more easier to
manage and healthier animals.
these cost less money and de-
mand less time. at the same time,
the animal is in a good condition
and there is no risk that it has to
leave the farm preterm.
choosing the right genetics
by means of the two new indices
farmers can more easily choose
breeding bulls which breed
efficient and healthy animals.
of course one can do this also
on the basis of the individual breed-
ing values. but then the farmer has to
estimate which breeding values carry
more weight. For example: Is a bull with
+1.200kg milk and 101 longevity more
efficient than a bull with +700kg and 119
for longevity? and how should fertility
and udder health be evaluated? the new
efficiency index includes already the
right estimation. tobias lerner, Global
product manager for Fleckvieh, says that
the new indices are a consequence of
the CRV sustainability strategy. “Milk pro-
ducers demand durable, high producing,
unproblematic and healthy animals. this
exactly is the breeding goal of CRV and
exactly this fact will be underlined by the
indices efficiency and health.”
Raldi breeds both, high efficiency (+7 %) as well as high health (+9 %).

crossBreedinG WItH FlECkVIEH
crossbreeding market in nether-
lands/Flanders
the market for crossbreeding in Neth-
erlands and Flanders has grown in the
last years. Crossbreeding accounts now
for 10 % of the inseminations. In total,
250.000 inseminations are done with
other breeds than Holstein, almost exclu-
sively for crossbreeding.
Fleckvieh has rapidly become the most
popular breed for crossbreeding. at this
moment 100.000 inseminations are done
with Fleckvieh-bulls, mostly on Holstein-
cows.
research
the effect of crossbreeding has been
analysed in two ways. First, the realized
breeding values of breeds other than
Holstein were studied. Second, the ac-
tual performance of crossbreeding cows
were analysed critically.
the breeds Fleckvieh, Montbeliarde,
Swedish Red, Jersey and brown Swiss
were part of this research. For Fleck-
vieh, the breeding values of 112 bulls
with in total nearly 20.000 daughters
were analyzed. the performance data
research included 9000 F1’s (Holstein x
Fleckvieh), 1700 F2’s (Holstein x Fleck-
vieh x Fleckvieh) and 900 F2’s (Holstein
x Fleckvieh x Holstein).
Fleckvieh superior in health-traits
Data shows that Fleckvieh is superior
for fertility, condition score, somatic cell
count, maternal calving ease, and rump
angle.
Fleckvieh has the best calving-interval,
the highest viability of the calves of the
crossbred cows and the highest meat-
index, based on the data of the fattening
bulls and the slaughter-results of the
culled cows.
Furthermore Fleckvieh was above aver-
age in persistency and claw health.
Direct calving ease is an attention point
when using Fleckvieh on Holstein.
breeders should only consider the very
best calving ease bulls when they want
to use Fleckvieh-bulls on heifers.
which breed to use on the first gen-
eration crossbred cows?
the data shows that F1’s (Holstein x
Fleckvieh) produce 500-600 kg of milk
less than the purebred Holsteins in their

first lactation, but with a slightly higher
protein-percentage.
In a more intensive system the F1’s can
be bred back to Holstein. the resulting
cows produced about 30 kg of fat and
protein less (Holstein 589 kg versus 560
kg for Holstein x Fleckvieh x Holstein) in
their first lactation, but they keep advan-
tages in fertility and health-traits.
If the goal is to further improve fertility
and health then the F1’s should again be
bred to Fleckvieh-bulls. to keep milk pro-
duction on a good level, it is advisable to
select within Fleckvieh the highest bulls
for production.
this is well in line with the CRV-breeding
goal for the Fleckvieh breed, which has
a high emphasis on Dairy – and Fitness
traits!

UntilnowGermanyandAustriahadacommonindexrunforSimmental.Sincedecember2014theCzechRepublicbecameanotherofficialmemberas.Thebackgroundofthisdevelopmentwillbedescribedbythefollowing,slightlyshortenedandtranslatedtextbyEmmerling,R.,BayerischeLandesanstaltfürLandwirtschaft,InstitutfürTierzucht,Grub.
the Czech simmental population is,
besides the population in Germany (DE)
and austria (at), the third largest popula-
tion, of which the dual-purpose breed will
be worked on intensively with regard to
the breeding. the breeding cooperation
among the different populations exists
already for many years and therefore a
transnational breeding estimation is a
reasonable step. Germany and austria
already work since 2002 together in a
transnational breeding estimation with
more than 40 criteria.
also the persons who are in charge of
the Czech simmental breed evinced for
quite some time their interest in a more
intensive cooperation regarding breed-
ing estimation. In 2008 the breeding esti-
mation for meat performance criteria has
been established for Germany, austria
and the Czech Republic.
Since april 2012 also the exterior criteria
of all three countries are estimated. Fur-
thermore, the responsible persons of the
Czech simmental breed have decided
a complete participation in all breeding
values within the breeding value estima-
tion network Germany–austria. With
regard to the genomic selection with the
simmental breed, the Czech Republic
participated from the beginning on –
since december 2011 genomic breeding
values for Czech animals are estimated.
the milk performance criteria in combi-
nation with the cell count, milking speed
and persistence are the most complex
breeding estimation with regard to Sim-
mental breed. therefore it was neces-
sary to do a lot of preliminary work in
order to guarantee a perfect integration
of the Czech Republic into the breeding
estimation network. after two test runs
and a successful participation in the
Interbull-test the Czech Republic has
officially be announced a member of the
conjoint breeding estimation in Decem-
ber 2014.
common data Base
Milk performance criteria are due to their
high standardization of the perform-
ance test easy to compare also from
one country to another. Since 1995, the
Czech Republic has collected more than
29 million day performances which play a
part in the breeding value estimation.
the number of cows that will accrual to
the estimation from Czech Republic is
about 40.000 a year, what is about the
amount of data, delivered from austria
and baden-Württemberg.
beside the similarity of the performance
information, the genetic combinations
among the population play an important
role for the practicability of transnational
breeding value estimation. this is es-
sential for the estimation of the country
level and the comparability of the breed-
ing values of all animals transnational. In
the context of the so-called „Eurotest-
Program“ of the European association
of Fleckvieh breeders (EVF) one has
started already in 1993 to insert individ-
as from now on Germany, austria and the Czech Republic do a common breeding estimation for Simmental breed. CRV belongs within the Czech Republic to the head providers of Simmental breed genetics and owns 175 breeding bulls.

age of analogous cows of younger age
groups from austria, baden-Württemberg
and bavaria is 20, 11 and 9 percent.
It is interesting, that in the Czech Repub-
lic cows with a higher external blood
part on average have lower breeding
values for milk. this may attribute to the
implementation of semen from bulls out
of the toP-segment of the DE-at popu-
lation. Furthermore the percentage of
cows with a French father (Montbéliarde)
within the younger age groups of Czech
Simmental population is about 6 to 9
percent, while the percentage in DE-at
is below one percent.
Due to the fact that the Montbéliarde
breed is highly specialized in milk per-
formance, one can expect higher milk
performance breeding values for these
cows.
Genomic Breeding estimation
by adding the Czech performance data
to the conventional breeding estimation,
now the Czech breeding bulls are part
of the training sample of the genomic
breeding estimation. because there are
only a few Czech bulls with a genotypifi-
cation, the gain is not that high.
In particular for the typification of
selected candidates with Czech ances-
tors, the consideration of these bulls
in the training sample is very valuable.
the reliability of the genomic milk value
of the around 850 genotyped Czech
candidates increases on average by 10
percent. there exist single candidates
with Czech ancestors with an increase of
reliability of up to 40 percent. therefore
the forecast of the quality of the genomic
breeding values within the new attributes
is now comparable with candidates of the
DE-at population. because of an incom-
plete genotyping of Czech bulls in the
pedigree there are still a few candidates
with lower reliabilities of the genomically
optimized breeding values.
conclusion and outlook
With the consideration of the Czech
Simmental population in the breeding
estimation for milk performance charac-
teristics, somatic cell counts and milking
speed, there are now direct comparable
breeding values for milk performance
complex and not only for meat- and
exterieur-traits.
In order to have a complete comparabil-
ity of the heredity performance, at the
moment most traits of the fitness blocks
are missing. one goal for the next year
is to work intensively on the integration
of the Czech performance data for the
breeding estimation for longevity, calving
ease, still births and fertility.
because of these missing breeding
values, only breeding bulls that are in co-
ownership with a German and austrian
organization are published in Germany
and austria. In addition there are only
daughter proven bulls published, with a
minimum of 10 daughters in the trait of
maternal calving ease.
the persons who are in charge of the
Czech simmental breed are already
involved in the current development
work and coordination processes for
the new overall breeding value. at the
moment it is not sure, if respectively
when the Czech Republic will overtake
the overall breeding value from Germany
and austria. Research is currently done
by the Czech colleagues. the junction of
the breeding estimation of all traits is an
important step that enlarges the nucleus
population of the dual purpose breed
Simmental, what is an important contri-
bution to the insurance of the genetic
progress and competitiveness.

program inserted 24 bulls. However, the
amount of bulls with daughters in the par-
ticipating countries is much higher. Statis-
tics of Interbull counted in august 2014 in
total 394 bulls, which have daughters in
Germany, austria and the Czech Repub-
lic in at least 10 herds. Recent data of
the DE-at-CZ breeding value estimation
feature for a total amount of 418 bulls a
minimum of 30 daughters from DE-at
and CZ (see test run September 2014).
among those bulls the most ones
originate from bavaria (217), austria (65),
baden-Württemberg (61), France (35)
and the Czech Republic (23). bulls, which
don’t originate from the Czech Republic
are often bulls, which completed their
test period in their countries of origin and
has been used in their second crop in the
Czech Republic as well. Most daughters
are from the bulls Weinold (+2.165 daugh-
ters), Vanstein (+2.347), Romtell (+2.084)
and Imposium (+1.801).

results from the history of the Czech
Simmental population. one can find
these parts in the pedigree of cows with
performance data.
until the years of birth at the end of the
nineties, the part of cows which have
more than 12 percent external blood
parts accounts for about 80 percent. this
part deepens for about 30 percent until
the current cow age-groups.
