Miracle
Joshua 10:12-27
The Background (10:1-5)
This is real HISTORY of Israel, not fiction.
It was God’s plan to give CANAAN to the
Israelites.
Israel won several major victories, and the
King of Jerusalem feared JOSHUA and the
Israelites. (10:1)
The King of Jerusalem called on 4 Amorite kings to join him in
battle against ISRAEL forming a league of 5
nations. (10:3)
The King of Gibeon TRICKED Joshua then
called on Joshua at Gilgal to keep his
covenant and help them. (10:4)
The Battle (10:5-15)
God promised Joshua a VICTORY, so he led his
army 25 miles to Gibeon at night and sprung a SURPRISE
attack on the Amorites outside Gibeon.
God helped by sending large
HAILSTONES from heaven at the enemy.
Joshua was instructed to destroy them all, but
there wasn’t enough TIME in the day. He
needed more DAYLIGHT hours.
Joshua prayed, “SUN, stand still over
Gibeon!” (10:12) Many of these pagan enemy WORSHIPED the sun!
The Outcome (10:16-27)
God had POWER over the sun.
The sun STOOD STILL until the enemy was
defeated. Time stood still for about a day. A
unique MIRACLE (10:14)
What is important is not HOW God did it, but THAT God did it!
The five kings hid in a CAVE. Joshua told his
men to roll huge STONES up against
the entrance
The news of this battle spread, and other
cities in Canaan were afraid of the Israelites
and the POWER of their God.
The Lessons
God will accomplish His PURPOSES.
The Amorites of Southern Canaan acted to HINDER or prevent God’s plan for the Israelites to conquer
Canaan.
God acted to preserve his people to bring the
MESSIAH into the world in line with His
promises in Genesis 12:1-3.
