From the Director’s Chair Ed & Jeanette Carr, FL1-K Senior Chapter Directors
“Staying in Touch”
(Adapted in part from “Membership Enhancement –by Larry & Penny Anthony, MEP Directors)
“Hello. We’re calling about our credit card account. There’s no problem, but…” (But we’d like to sell you
something.) Are there any of us who haven’t received a call such as this? Many of us screen our calls these
days to help combat the never-ending tide of robocalls. However, it’s important to remember that some of
those calls may be from the Chapter Director wishing to tell you about an upcoming ride or to check up on
you to be sure everything is OK. Please have the courtesy to respond to their calls or messages on
GroupWorks. They are trying to keep you engaged with the organization you joined!
Some of us joined GWRRA just to get Wing World magazine or Rescue Plus insurance. And, perhaps you
decided that Chapter life isn’t for you. If so, that’s fine and your decision, but we really wish you’d visit a
Chapter Gathering or go on a ride with us once or twice to see what it’s like! In this case you may still get a
call from your Chapter or District occasionally, just to reaffirm your status. You may have sold your bike or
the rider in the family may have passed away. Please respond anyway. They are volunteers trying to be sure
you, the Member, are being accommodated in the manner you prefer. A polite return phone call or
GroupWorks message is much appreciated. This also helps us keep our membership rolls accurate and
reduces the chance you may receive unwanted communications.
If you’re a new Member, you may receive several phone calls or emails from GWRRA in your District.
(Districts are comprised of one or more U.S. states or Canadian provinces.) Your District Team will phone
you, trying to get a feel for your expectations and the type of riding you like to do. One or more nearby
chapters may also contact you, inviting you to an upcoming gathering or ride.
In short, communication is the life’s blood of our organization. Phone calls and GroupWorks are how we stay
in touch with our friends. Please don’t block us out!
We will be having a Mini District Closing Ceremony but there are several things that need to be done to complete the Rally Process. All Rider Education Motorcycle tickets purchased with your registration will be filled out for you and entered for the drawing to be held as soon as we are sure all purchased tickets are turned into us. The drawing will be held as soon as it is safe to have a public gathering for the drawing. At that time, we will also draw for the Early Bird Registration, the Shirt Pre-Order winner, announce the 2020-2021 District Couple Of the Year, the 2020-2021 District Person Of the Year, Recruiter Of the Year and the winners of the District Wanderer Visitation Program!
We hope to see you at a GWRRA event in 2020,

“ 4-Wheel Tail Gunner”
Rainie and I may be restricted to driving the truck right now, but it hasn’t stopped us from doing our favorite
jobs – “Bringing Up the Rear & Providing Help”.
On the last group lunch ride before “Social Distancing & Res-
taurant Closures” started, Gordon & Betty Cury and Ken-
dra Lee joined us on the drive up I-95 to Clark’s Fish Camp
at 12903 Hood Landing Rd, Jacksonville, FL. We put in the
reservation for 11 members and waited for Ed & Jeanette
Carr, Thomas “Mouse” Kaczmarski & Jackie Zigler,
Fred Bismarck, and Gene Heaney to arrive from Palm
Coast via the St. John River Rd.
After a fantastic meal, conversation, & poising with the ani-
mals (see all photos on fl1-k.org web’s site), we were the last to leave Clark’s Fish Camp – the tail gunner
again! After turning on Old Kings Road, we spotted a purple motorcycle parked on the side of the road with a
flat tire. It was Mouse & Jackie. Mouse hasn’t been able to ride for several months – thus the mechanical
problem. Mouse was waiting for a tow truck. Since he was near home we took Jackie with us and Mouse was
able to hobble home slowly with us trailing with safety flashing.
A successful ending to a great day.
Bob & Loraine Ingenito
Quote of the day:
The virus doesn't move, people move it.
We stop moving, the virus stops moving.
The virus dies.
It's that simple.
Stay home... It could save a life.

Membership Enhancement Musings
Jeanette Carr, Sr Membership Enhancement
TICKETS *** TICKETS *** TICKETS
Ticket stubs have been checked & delivered to the new FL Rider Educator, Dominick & Diane DeSiato .
Geno Jette was out working and so even though Kathy Jette was relaxing at home for her birthday, she was
happy to pose for a picture. Geno was a good husband and took her out to dinner that evening. Now we just
have to wait for a new Closing Ceremony date/loction for us to discover if we have won anything. We have
been selling tickets since 2002 and not sold the winning ticket yet – BUT we are ever hopeful our luck will
change. AND, we believe in the Florida Rider Education Program and will continue to support it. Other
states have been inspired by our program and have worked to provide funds to help their members learn
more about safe riding.
When we joined FL1-H in 2002 it was after the rally and we missed all the fun. Beth Harris won the
GoldWing that year and from what we hear the party group almost got kicked out of the hotel. It was a
grand time and many FL1-K members were in attendence and remember the fun. Two years ago, Don Black
won $1000 plus he got the $200 bonus because he also put his name in the “Sold By” space.
The person who’s name is drawn doesn’t have to be present to win, but over the years we have known many
of the winners.
A member from Clearwater Chapter FL1-M won the bike and the next year he won the 2nd place prize.
WoW!
A member from FL1-J won another year and took the $10,000 to fix up the bike he had.
A single ticket sold to a young man in Tampa (non GW member) won 1st prize. ?? I don’t know if he
took the bike or money.
A long time staff member of FL1-F2 Ocala had left the rally early one year and thought his friends were
playing a joke on him when he received the winning call. The whole ballroom cheered loudly to
help him believe.
A ticket sold on a Wingers & Waves cruise was the winner another year.
Last year the C.D. for FL1-G won the GoldWing
I checked through all the stubs and found a few blank ones. Fortunately they were part of banded sets so I
knew who’s name and phone number to write. There were a few missing “Sold By” and so I added the name
of the person on the ticket. The “Sold By” line on any Ride Lotto Tickets sold at our gatherings have “FL1-(Continued on page 5)

K” written on that line.
GOOD LUCK TO EVERYONE! WE ARE ALL WINNERS EITHER WAY BECAUSE WE HAVE EACH
OTHER!

"Happy, Happy Birthday....."
"These are unusual times," declares the TV personality. Yes, we know. Gary & I are now silently singing our Chapter K birthday song as we wash our hands. That song is about 20 seconds long...the length of time health professionals recommend we lather up.
We are seeing more GWRRA event cancellations on Group Works, therefore we are missing contact with our chapter friends. We used to look forward to each opportunity to connect with them.
We now wear vinyl gloves at the grocery store, pharmacy and Ace Hardware! I carry a mask in my purse to use if I must be in close contact with a coughing fellow customer who doesn't recognize the CDC's recom-mended spacing.
One neighbor works Infectious Disease Control at a Volusia County hospital. She gets home late every night and she's gone again before dawn. Her husband is home as well as their kids.
Another neighbor is in law enforcement. He goes through his workout regimen in his garage and on his drive-way instead of going to the gym now.
Another neighbor's daughter taught English in a Spanish college...now the college is closed because of COVID19. She is trying to piece together available flights back to the U.S. She knows she will be in a state's quarantine unit when/if she can get here.
Our son moved back home to Michigan. Flights were hard to find in and out of Boston/Logan and Detroit. The company is doing its business via teleconference.
Our daughter-in-law does insurance billing for a unit of U of M Hospital. Her unit is shut down.
Their daughter is completing her degree on line at U of M. She was to start work in King County, Washington 1st of June. If you've been tuned to the news, you know all about King County and the coronavirus.
Daughter, Laura, is CFO for a privately-held string of bar/restaurants in the Phoenix Valley and the State of Iowa. She started filling out unemployment papers for the Iowa employees last week as they were being laid off. This week the unemployment papers were for their valley workers. Her husband's business is shutting down...the Big 3 Automakers don't need air bags.
Their oldest daughter is video-teaching her 60 students from her "home office." Their youngest daughter will receive her MA via video. No "walking" for this class.
This is our family's scenario. No doubt, yours' is the same.
A few (???) of us K Members are of an age that we remember the 1940s. We didn't travel places unnecessarily. There was not enough gas for our cars. New tires were non-existent.
This COVID19 pandemic reminds me of the same powerless feeling, commodity-wise. But then we were STRONG! We were sacrificing so that we could win the war. We did win that war and we will win the war against this virus.
We will keep our distance from our friends and neighbors, but we will smile and give them hearty greetings when we see them. A smile makes everyone's day!
Gary is still posting pictures on the chapter web site.
And, please, if you know of any member who may be having a hard time or is ill, please let me know. email [email protected] phone: 386-586-7778
We'll get through this together! And we'll be singing "Happy, Happy Birthday" for the right reasons.

MOTORIST AWARENESS IS EVERYWHERE
Did You Know: that motorcycle safety is so important to the State of Florida that they have their own Motor-
cycle Safety Coalition?
Ride Smart Florida is the communication and outreach extension of the Florida Motorcycle Safety Coalition,
a group of safety partners from around the state who share the common goal of reducing fatalities of motorcy-
cle riders and their passengers. Have you ever seen the signs over I95 that say “Watch Out for Motorcycles” –
well you can thank the Coalition and Ride Smart.
Ride Smart participated in several major motorcycle safety events throughout the state and has developed and
distributed multiple motorcycle safety education materials. “May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month” is a
big success. The event is aimed to promote motorcycle safety awareness in Florida during the month of May
by working together to achieve “no motorcycle fatalities on May 1st, 2nd and 3rd.
To promote the motorcycle fatality free campaign, the Center for Urban Transportation Research team created
several online and offline events that both motorcyclists and car drivers could participate in together, including
“Watch for Motorcycles” yard sign installations, using #MotorcycleFatalityFree123 on all social media plat-
forms, a Ride Smart Florida Facebook Frame, and the Ride Smart motorcycle online safety pledge.
GWRRA Florida’s own Jim McGinnis from Daytona is a member of the Coalition and our new District Ed-
ucator has also been a member of the Florida Motorcycle Safety Coalition. It is good to know that there are
members of GWRRA working towards Florida Motorcycle Safety.
AND let’s not forget our own District Motorist Awareness Coordinators – Nate and Danelle Kinion! They
are passionate about Motorist Awareness and keeping our GWRRA members safe.

Distracted Drivers
The legendary Hurt Report (1981) listed the primary causes of motorcycle crashes. The
present-day MSF Courses still use the Hurt Report findings to develop the riding curriculum used in their clas-
ses today. In 1981 there were less than 5% of motorcycle being rear ended. It seems funny that back then
most motorcycle had only one small tail light but getting hit from behind was not a major issue. Today most
motorcycles are lit up like a Christmas Tree but are getting rear ended more often. A recent study by the Vir-
ginia Tech Transportation Institute with the Motorcycle Safety Foundation shows there has been an increase to
7% for motorcycles being struck from behind. We all know the reason for the increase in rear end collisions,
motorcycle or cars, and that is the use of cell phones.
Florida recently passed a law that makes texting while driving a primary offense. Which means an Officer
can stop you if he sees you using your cell phone. However, the way the law is worded there are loop holes in
it. Most Police Officers are not enforcing the new law. It was a "feel good" law without any teeth, so don't
relax your guard at all thinking the new law is helping your safety.
When you are coming to a stop look behind you to make sure the car behind you is also slowing down to
stop. Leave plenty of space between you and the car you are stopping behind. Position yourself offset left or
offset right so you have enough room to escape to either side of the care in front of you should you notice that
the car approaching you from behind is not stopping. Don't be in a hurry to pop your bike into neutral as you
normally would at a long red light waiting for the light to turn green. If the car behind you does stop don't re-
lax yet. Wait until at least one more car stops behind the car behind you, giving you an extra buffer should a
third car strike the second car. You’re not done relaxing yet. When the light turns green quickly look behind
you to make sure the driver of the car isn't looking down at their phone. I know firsthand of crashes where the
driver who was texting at the red light, looks up just long enough to see the light had turned green and imme-
diately put their foot on the gas, striking the stopped motorcycle in front of them.
Technology for cars is getting better with warning collision sensors that will automatically brake for the
inattentive driver. Don't rely on that technology just yet. It will take many years before every car behind you
has that type of system. Unfortunately, we must be more on guard today than ever before for distracted driv-
ers.
Ride safe,
Dominick & Diane

The IRS Audits A Gambling Grandpa
The IRS decides to audit Grandpa, and summons him to the IRS office. The auditor was not surprised when
Grandpa showed up with his attorney.
The auditor said, "Well, sir, you have an extravagant lifestyle and no full-time employment, Which you ex-
plain by saying that you win money gambling. I'm not sure the IRS finds that believable."
"I'm a great gambler, and I can prove it," says Grandpa. "How about a demonstration?"
The auditor thinks for a moment and said, "Okay. Go ahead."
Grandpa says, "I'll bet you a thousand dollars that I can bite my own eye."
The auditor thinks a moment and says, "It's a bet."
Grandpa removes his glass eye and bites it. The auditor's jaw drops.
Grandpa says, "Now, I'll bet you two thousand dollars that I can bite my other eye."
Now the auditor can tell Grandpa isn't blind, so he takes the bet. Grandpa removes his dentures and bites his
good eye.
The stunned auditor now realizes he has wagered and lost three grand, with Grandpa's attorney as a witness.
He starts to get nervous.
"Want to go double or nothing?" Grandpa asks. "I'll bet you six thousand dollars that I can stand on one side of
your desk, and pee into that wastebasket on the other side, and never get a drop anywhere in between."
The auditor, twice burned, is cautious now, but he looks carefully and decides there's no way this old guy
could possibly manage that stunt, so he agrees again.
Grandpa stands beside the desk and unzips his pants, but although he strains mightily, he can't make the stream
reach the wastebasket on the other side, so he ends up urinating all over the auditor's desk.
The auditor leaps with joy, realizing that he has just turned a major loss into a huge win. But Grandpa's own
attorney moans and puts his head in his hands.
"Are you okay?" the auditor asks.
"Not really," says the attorney. "This morning, when Grandpa told me he'd been summoned for an audit, he bet
me twenty-five thousand dollars that he could come in here and pee all over your desk and that you'd be happy
about it!"
