Golden Horn falls to Found
Triple Crown hero Pharoah bows out in Classic styleLOS ANGELES, Nov 1, (AFP):American Pharoah, who electrified USracing with his run to the first TripleCrown sweep in 37 years, capped hiscareer with an emphatic victory in theBreeders’ Cup Classic in Kentucky onSaturday.
Before a frenzied crowd at Keeneland,in Lexington, Kentucky, AmericanPharoah set the pace in the $5 millionclassic and pulled away in the finalstraight to beat Effinex by 6-1/2 lengths.
It was the ninth win in 11 career startsfor the three-year-old colt — a record thatincluded the first sweep of the KentuckyDerby, Preakness and Belmont Stakessince Affirmed achieved the treble in 1978.
“What can I say? What a horse!” saidowner Ahmed Zayat. “He is a once-in-a-lifetime horse. This race was only aboutAmerican Pharoah and we wanted him togo out a winner.
“It was so emotional. I didn’t even seethe final eighth (of a mile) because I hadmy eyes closed the whole time.”
After piloting American Pharoah toone last win, jockey Victor Espinoza said
he was happy to see the horse headinginto retirement.
“He’s run so many times this year andI think it’s time for him to step out andhave a nice life,” Espinoza said.
The two-day, 13-race thoroughbredextravaganza provided no fairytale end-ing for European superstar Golden Horn.
Found, the filly trained by Ireland’sAidan O’Brien denied Golden Horn inthe $3 million Breeders’ Cup Turf to spoil
the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe winner’sswansong.
Golden Horn was the star of a strongEuropean contingent, coming off victo-ries at the Epsom Derby and EclipseStakes as well as the Arc.
But trainer John Gosden worried theloose, sand-based turf course at Keenelandwouldn’t suit him and he was right.
Although Golden Horn was the first toget past early pace-setter Shining Copper
in the 1-1/2-mile race, jockey RyanMoore had Found perfectly positionedand the filly came out on top in a dramat-ic stretch duel.
With the win Found turned the tableson Golden Horn after finishing runner upto him at the Irish Champion Stakes andat Ascot on Champions Day.
“She really deserved this,” said Moore.Gosden was relieved that the race pro-
duced a European one-two, after stunning
disappointment for the trans-Atlanticraiders in the $2 million Mile.
Four-year-old filly Tepin, trained byMark Casse and ridden by JulienLeparoux, seized the win overMondialiste and Grand Arch as a string oftalented European turf runners — includ-ing defending Mile championKarakontie, French hopes Esoterique andMake Believe and the Roger Charlton-trained Time Test failed to produce.

Fame Game seeks Japanese win in Melbourne CupSYDNEY, Nov 1, (AFP): Pre-postfavourite Fame Game will bid to emu-late Delta Blues and become the secondJapanese horse to win Australia’s great-est race the Melbourne Cup atFlemington on Tuesday.
The Yoshitada Munakata-trained six-year-old, to be ridden by Zac Purton,impressed with a fast-finishing sixth inthe Caulfield Cup lead-up race a fort-night ago and appears suited to the
extra 800 metres (half-mile) and longfinishing straight of the 3,200m (twomile) Melbourne Cup.
Delta Blues, trained by KatsuhikoSumii and ridden by Yasunari Iwata,beat stablemate Pop Rock by a nose inthe 2006 race to further globalise the154-year-old Melbourne Cup.
Ireland’s Vintage Crop became thefirst overseas-trained runner to win theMelbourne Cup in 1993 and in recent
years international horses have domi-nated the race, with Germany’sProtectionist winning last year’s event.
Fame Game, drawn well in 12, is aim-ing to join that select group in Tuesday’sAus$6.2 million ($4.4 million) two-miler.
