World-renowned biblical scholars and an internationally known professor of preaching from Candler School of Theology offer their expertise in discussions of how the familiar Advent and Christmas texts from Matthew and Luke are brought to life in the art of John August Swanson. Swanson’s art tells Bible stories in finely detailed, brilliantly colored paints and original prints, the largest collection of which is displayed at Candler. Six of the pieces at Candler constitute a series known as “the Birth Narrative,” and they are featured in this Sermon Series. November 26: A Thrill of Hope: The Christmas Story in Word and Art - “A Visit” Luke 1:26-38 (NRSV)
December 3: A Thrill of Hope: The Christmas Story in Word and Art - “The Nativity” Luke 2:1-7 (NRSV)
December 10: A Thrill of Hope: The Christmas Story in Word and Art - “The Shepherds” Luke 2:8-20 (NRSV)
December 17: Christmas Cantata
December 24: A Thrill of Hope: The Christmas Story in Word and Art - “Presentation in the Temple” Luke 2:21-40 (NRSV)
December 31: A Thrill of Hope: The Christmas Story in Word and Art - “”Flight Into Egypt” Matthew 2:13-15 (NRSV)
January 7: A Thrill of Hope: The Christmas Story in Word and Art - “Epiphany” Matthew 2:1-12 (NRSV)
Sermon Series for Advent
Coffee with the Pastor When I think of Thanksgiving, I think of the frantic scurrying and preparations we make as we plan to meet with family and friends. The chaos threatens to consume us and to ruin our holiday spirit of generosity.
When I think of Thanksgiving, I also think of sitting around the table with family and friends. I think of
catching up - recounting favorites old stories and learning new ones. Learning more about the lives of those around us.
Sometimes, we forget the importance of growing in community through sitting and listening. So this holiday season, may we be intentional about spending more time listening, more time sitting, and more time leaning in.
Pastor Allison
Thank You
Your kind and thoughtful expression of sympathy is deeply appreci-ated. Thanks for serving the delicious meal for Art’s funeral.

Hello Asbury!
Can you believe it’s November, already? Even though we’re called to be thankful people all
year long, it seems that this season brings out the best in us, as we remember the blessings
of the year. As I reflect, I am surely feeling blessed to be a part of this church family and
community.
However, not everyone is so privileged. So, I’ve been thinking a lot, lately, about how I might
be more intentionally missional, both in my own neighborhood (locally) and around the world
(globally). It’s a challenge, but as I continue to get to know the people of Asbury, I have been
excited to find that so many of you are on board with this way of thinking! There are great
things to come!
Some things I have loved best about this past month include the excitement and energy in our
new children’s Sunday School as well as the moments spent together with the children, dur-
ing worship. The way they light up is infectious, as they are learning more about God, Scrip-
ture, and how this all matters for their lives! Having the children involved in our worship ser-
vices reminds me that this is a living, breathing, growing church (although, admittedly, the
emoji balls may have been a stretch)!
Looking toward the month ahead, I am excited about creating space for more intergenera-
tional interaction and putting plans into place for engaging families in the community more
fully. I will also be taking some time for soul care and vision casting!
As we move ahead, please feel free to contact me in person at the office, by phone, text,
email, or Facebook. Raising kids and teenagers, to be the people God created them to be, is
hard work, and it takes all of us working together!
Blessings,
L.

Don’t you just love birthdays? God made everyone so wonderfully complex and placed His hand of blessing on our heads! How precious it is to realize He is thinking of us constantly – with love! We at Asbury would like to celebrate that special time by having a party the first Sunday of each month honoring those having birthdays that month. We will have cake, coffee and punch following each service and are anx-ious to have you join us in the Overflow Room for lots of fellowship and fun. The next celebration will be November 5. Please mark your calendars and come ready to be filled with God’s love. The whole congregation is invited to celebrate each month with those having a birthday that month. Happy Birthday!

Children in Kindergarten through 5th grades can join us in the Children’s Sanctuary (room 6, upstairs) at 9:00 a.m. for worship, games, prayer, and Scripture, all presented in a kid friendly format! We are so excited about the changes coming to As-bury in our children’s ministries de-partment, because children are the church… not just the future of the church, but the church right now!
