Gove really turns it on for the cameras

I WAS lucky enough to spendfour glorious days in Goveearlier this week, more spec-ifically, three nights at magi-cal Banubanu Eco Wilder-ness Retreat, which issituated on Bremer Island,just 40 minutes’ boat ridefrom Gove Harbour.

I was there shooting seg-ments for The Fishing DVD,a quarterly video fishingmagazine that showcasesangling locations and tech-niques from around thecountry. We were hosted byTrevor Hosie and Helen Mar-tin from Banubanu Retreat,and fished aboard Trevor’sseaworthy 8.5m plate alloyboat, MV Nomad.

While tourist numbers de-cline significantly after theend of September, the nextfew months are a time of yeareagerly anticipated by localNhulunbuy anglers. DuringOctober the persistent tradewinds finally begin to ease

and seas regularly becomeironing-board-flat, allowingtrailer boat owners to headoffshore and sample theworld-class fishing thatNorth East Arnhem Land isso famous for. No wonder theannual John Jones GameFishing Classic is staged offGove in early Novembereach year. This popularevent typically sees someoutstanding light tackle ac-tion on sailfish, marlin, bigmackerel, tuna and trevally.

‘‘The fishing here off Goveis great all year round,’’Trevor Hosie told me duringmy recent visit to Banubanu.‘‘I run fishing charters with afreshly-cooked lunch of themorning’s catch guaranteed,and I haven’t missed out yet.‘‘But during the windymonths, from May until Oct-ober, you often have to workmuch harder for your fish.’’

I had to agree with Trevor.We enjoyed a red-hot mack-erel bite and also landedplenty of reefies on our

‘Nomad’ targets both theabundant reef species andalso the superb light tacklesport and game fishing on of-fer. In addition, Trevor willdrop anglers on nearby des-erted beaches and pristinesand-spits where they can en-joy lure casting and fly fish-ing. It’s a great way to spenda few days, and Helen’s su-perb cooking just caps it off!
