In recent years, the Indian economy has emerged as one
of the world's major and front-running economies. Vast
structural transformation combined with rising pace of
globalization and open door policies characterize the
Indian Economy in recent years. The country's rural
economy too has witnessed many changes and a host of
challenges, particularly in the agricultural sector.
Rural India too is bound to witness many changes, side
by side with a host of new and complex challenges. First,
the agriculture of tomorrow is bound to become a more
involved cobweb of bio- tech and heritable complexities.
Second, commercialization of agriculture will grow
apace, and with that inter- sector transactions, both for
production and consumption purposes, would expand.
Third, the expanding process of agr icul ture
diversification would entail, inter- alia, mounting of allied
agro- activities and growth of non- farm enterprises.
Fourth, under the new dispensations, rigorous farm
production and time management schedules would be
the rule rather than the exception. Fifth, the farmer of
tomorrow has to learn to use the non- conventional
renewable source of energy for which expert advice and
knowledge input from outside would be indispensible.
Sixth, rural India would witness formidable shift from
agriculture to non- farm activities, so that the
conventional gaps and differences between BHARAT
and INDIA would get steadily diminuted. In one world,
rural India of tomorrow would have a vastly different
economic complexion and economic functionaries
engaged in the process of rural development would have
to have different outlooks, work approaches and
readiness to grapple with more complex issues.
The students of our MBA-Rural Development
Programme are being trained to face such newly
emerging challenges in the rural areas. Hailing from
various academic disciplines (humanities, commerce,
law, engineering, science, etc.), they receive rigorous
training to grapple with numerous rural development
issues, relating to agri-business, micro- finance,
corporate social responsibility and health, to name a few.
I am sure, as the time rolls on, they will command a fairly
lucrative and purposeful working career for themselves
and bring wide and expanding public commendation for
the Institute.
I wish them good luck.

A number of prestigious organizations visit the MBA
Rural Development Programme of the Institute to
recruit students to work with them. These students
have been through a series of rigorous field
experiences of seeing understanding, experiencing
and learning from the rural. They synthesise such
invaluable ins ights wi th the volumes of
management text they read. Each student acquires
a unique synthesis of experiences and readings.
Organisations have diverse needs which the
Institute fulfils.
Students spent the last harsh summer working with
rural organizations in different and difficult areas,
experiencing the problems and solving the
problems as far as possible. Pradan in Jharkhand
managed the tribals to produce marigold flowers.
The students explored and analyzed the value chain
between Kolkata, Bokaro, Jamshedpur and Ranchi,
and helped marigold find a more then remunerative
market. A set of students learnt new ways of
farming and causes and remedies of illness among
goat and how to manage an agro extension
programme at the Grameen Development Services
in Saharanpur and Mujafarpur. They learnt to
conserve water and techniques of pricing and
assessing the value of water at HESCO in Dehradun.
Working with Magsaysay awardee, Dr. Anil Prakash
Joshi, students organised a cycle rally in Dehradun
and forced the mega project to sanction the cycle
lane in the city. With Janhit foundation in Lucknow
they made and mentored Self Help Groups. Working
in an E-governance project with Drishtee Mathura,
they managed officials to reduce red tape and work
fast to give income, caste and residential certificate.
Students have worked hard and learnt in
challenging circumstances. Rural areas have
diverse problems and recruiting organizations have
specific needs. They come to the Institute looking
for such specialists and are seldom disappointed.
I wish the student all success.

feeds into the programme.
The two year ful l t ime Masters of Business
Administration- Rural Development, MBA (RD)
programme was initiated in 2001. So far 283 students
have graduated from this course and joined the
corporate and development world. The Class of 2013
has 36 students.
MISSION
The mission of the MBA-Rural Development Programme
is to build committed and competent professionals who
could transform rural communities that are embedded in
a culture of silence into those that can think and act on
their own, plan their own destiny, control and manage
their own institutions, evolve and adopt technologies for
sustainable development as well as adapt to changing
demands of the market.
OBJECTIVES
a) To train students to become development
managers in the formal and informal sectors of a
rural society ;
b) To equ ip young men and women w i t h
entrepreneurial abilities ;
c) To inculcate egalitarian values among students for
professional commitment,
integrity and ethics informed
by social purpose; and
d) To t r a i n s t uden t s f o r
competencies for rural
transformation.
PROGRAMME DESIGN
The MBA (RD) Programme is
designed to provide students a
c o m p r e h e n s i v e l e a r n i n g
oppor tuni ty wi th intensive
theoret ical knowledge and
extensive practical exposure to
the rural reality. It seeks to blend diverse learning
methods in order to enable students to integrate subject
knowledge and practical skills with an attitude to view
reality in a holistic manner.
The main features and the content of the programme are
as follows:
A. Immersion Work
B. Course Work
• Classroom Teaching
• Simulation and Experiential Exercises, Case
Studies
• Field visits
C. Village Work
D. Summer Placement Work : Train ing in a
Development Organization
E. Research Project Work
A. Immersion Work
Students are inducted in the programme with an
orientation session which informs them about the
Institute, the MBA-RD Programme, its Mission and
Objectives. Students are also offered Mentorship by the
core faculty of the Institute. Assigning each student to a
Teacher-Mentor is done in the orientation. It also involves
two weeks long stay in villages selected by the Institute.
Objective of the Immersion work is to acquaint students
with village and rural living, locate boundaries of a
village, and identify physical parameters of livelihood
and other agro-economic conditions. This also enables
GBPSSI Placement Brochure 2013 07
The MBA Rural Development(MBA-RD) Programme
them to observe and experience the problems faced by
rural people and in general to develop an appreciation of
why efforts for rural development are required. Based on
the problems identified and needs of the people a plan of
initiatives is developed. The visit also aims at helping
students to develop qualities which are needed to
establish rapport with people/communities and initiate
participatory development process.
B. Course Work
There are 27 courses spread over four semesters.
Students acquire knowledge and skills through an
appropriate mix of lectures, field visits, practice and
experiential learning.
Field visits in the first two semesters help student
interface theory with rural reality. Concepts learnt in the
classrooms are used to develop own understanding of
challenges in rural society. Students report on field visits
enabling them to reect and consolidate their learning.
Experiential Exercises like games, role-plays,
simulations and case studies are designed to help
students reect in a group and acquire requisite
managerial and organizational capabilities.
C. Village Work
Village Work is undertaken by students in their first and
second semesters. It provides opportunity to students to
live and interact with villagers and understand in depth
the rural reality. It aims at sensitizing students to the
concerns of rural people, help them identify the
constraints and potentials for development in the area.
Students visualize their role as professionals and
experience rural living from a change agent's
perspective. They record their observations and
experiences in field diaries and also formulate research
questions. Students make a presentation before the final
submission of the study report.
For village work of students, three villages were identified
by the Institute and students were sent to these villages
in three groups for undertaking task of assessing the
needs of these inhabitants in the context of geography,
culture, political structure and existing resources of the
area besides ongoing government interventions. The
students found that economic needs were not exclusive
need. Lack of political independence in voicing their
concerns, absence of avenues in promoting effective
supply of local produce, and inability in assertion of their
legitimate rights were some other handicaps that
inhibited fulfillment of significant needs. Favouritism in
government run schemes was depriving many from
their dues and also political interference based on caste
was pushing many towards unwarranted activities,
retarding both the development of the area and growth of
individuals.
D. Summer Placement Work: Training in a
Development Organization
Summer Training is an attempt to bridge the gap between
the professional world and academic learning. It enables
students to experience the rigours of professional
environment. The training gives students a unique edge
to maintain a direct and live contact with organizations,
work with the organizations, and understand their
complexities and challenges.
Objectives of the summer training are:
To provide students with an opportunity to apply the
concepts learnt to real life situations;
To sensitize students to the nuances of a work place
by assigning time-bound projects in an organization;
and
To provide students a platform to work and develop a
network, which will be useful to further their career
prospects.
GBPSSI Placement Brochure 2013 08
Summer Training is arranged for all students with
Corporate, Government and Non-Government
organizations concerned with rural sector, after the
completion of second semester and before the initiation
of the third semester. The training is of 6-8 weeks
duration and provides a platform to students to be a part
of the organization and learn from actual practice of the
skills acquired.
Students went to different parts of the country and
returned with experiences on issues and challenges in
development in villages of North India, South India, hilly
regions, industrial regions, tribal regions etc. to name a
few. This helped in creating a better understanding of
Indian rural life in general and preparing the students to fit
in any part of the country in any project.

WORKSHOP BY JANHIT FOUNDATION:
(14th September, 2012)
One day workshop organized by Janhit Foundation,
Lucknow, focused on 'SHG formation and its role in
Livelihood Promotion'. The role and significance of
SHGs and its relation with livelihood was discussed,
analyzing factors that inhibit in formation and the factors
that are promotional to its formation and continuation. It
further focused on livelihood and banks relationships
that entailed certain technicalities and the ways to
overcome it through educative methods. Motivation was
another dimension which would generate the will to
improve one's socio- economic condition by working in
group, reciprocating to the needs of each other and at the
same time making gains for self. Such psychological
transformation requires assiduous exercises on the part
of facilitators. Students were taught these qualities.
WORKSHOP BY GRAMEEN DEVELOPMENT
SERVICES:
(19th November, 2012)
One day Orientation Programme on 'Conceptual
framework of rural livelihood and its Challenges', was
organized in collaboration with Grameen Development
Services (GDS), Lucknow on 19th November, 2012 by
Sri Sushil Kumar Dwivedi. Themes discussed were,
sources of livelihood, poor assets and livelihood,
indebtness, inadequate institutional support and risk
taking ability among rural people. In this context, many
case studies were also assigned to students for analysis
and conceptualization of theme. The success of
livelihood depends on increasing income and
employment oppor tunities along with availability of
sufficient capital for augmentation of gain. Management
Graduates must have skills in educating people/ target
groups in Cost- Benefit Analysis and modes to enhance
value at each stage, from investment to income through
livelihood sources. Students were also given exercises
to prepare action plan for meeting challenges in
livelihood promotion.
WORKSHOP BY BHARAT AGRO INDUSTRY

were taught on the basis of data collected from the field
and students presented their exercise in the seminar hall
and finally shared these with the rural inhabitants. They
were further taught to prepare concept notes and project
proposals.
LECTURE BY PADAMSHREE PROF ANIL
JOSHI:
(5th December, 2012)
Noted environmentalist and recipient of Padmashri and
Jamnalal Bajaj Award, Prof. Anil Prakash Joshi exhorted
the students of MBA (RD) to be aware of the declining
status of the environment in the country and
subsequently reorient the people towards growth i.e. to
be ecologically protective as the quantity and quality of
drinking water is depleting fast and alternative sources of
harnessing energy are not being encouraged.
Festivals are further polluting rivers. Hence, without
changing its spirit, the form should be transformed from
using such occasion to clean the rivers. No development
plan could be a success without a higher 'Gross
Ecological Product'. The youth should learn to sacrifice
some of their comforts and become aware of the
degrading environment.
DISCUSSION WITH PROF PARSHURAMAN,
DIRECTOR, TISS :
(21st January, 2013)
GBPSSI Placement Brochure 2013 13
GangaSansad
he symbol of Indian civilisation's continuity, Tdiversity, unity and sacredness, the river Ganga has
become a utilitarian river for absorbing industrial waste
and foul water of tanneries. Various unsuccessful
schemes and false promises to retain its purity,
prompted several enlightened communities to discuss
and deliberate on multiple dimensions, that if
implemented could protect not only the sacred river but
also the faith of millions of people.
With this objective of protecting Ganga from pollution, a
three days 'Ganga Sansad' was organized by the Institute
from 21st January to 23rd January, 2013 in
collaboration with Jal Biradari, Gyan Pratishthan
andTarun Bharat Sangh. The Sansad was attended by
eminent exper ts on water preser vat ion, soi l
conservation, ecological balance besides, social
scientists, religious leaders, political personalities and
honourable judges of the Allahabad High Court of
Judicature.
The students of MBA (RD) also took active part in the
Sansad proceedings and learnt various environmental
dimensions that added to their knowledge and imparted
lesson in water management at the local level also,
besides playing a conscientious role in protecting Ganga
from pollution.
