    MEMORIAMS

THE TRUTH ABOUT THE BIRTH OF JESUS (PART 5) Joseph and Mary lived in Nazareth, 125 km north of Bethlehem. “A decree was sent out by Caesar Augustus that all the world was to be registered,” (Luke 2:1) therefore Joseph and Mary travelled to Bethlehem to register in the city of their ancestors. “And so it was while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered. And she brought forth her first-born son and wrapped Him in swaddling cloths and laid Him in a manger because there was no room for them in the inn,” (2:6-7). An angel appeared to the shepherds in the fields at night around Bethlehem saying, “Behold I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour which is Christ the Lord.” (2:13-14). Question: Is He your Saviour and Lord? ~ Herb West, Box 870, Sundridge P0A 1Z0

Looks like I am not the only one itching to get out fishing. We had to spend a few days at the shop getting things ready for the new year. In the time I was there, the phone must have rang 10 times with calls from people down south wanting to know if the lakes were frozen over yet.

Well, the answer to that is yes and no.

Some of the smaller lakes have ice on them. Even some of the smaller places on the big lakes have ice on them. But there is not any place that I would send any-one out to go fishing on just yet. There are just way too many sur-prises waiting for you out on any of the lakes around here.

It is not always good to be the first one out on any lake. If you can’t help yourself and have to go, make sure you at least take someone along just in case you get into trouble. It might be also a good idea to leave a flight plan at home, on the kitchen table. That way, if something goes wrong, at least people will know where to find the body.

Over the years, I have had some wonderful first-ice fishing. There have been times that the ice was so thin it would sink below your feet as you walked out. When you cut a hole, the water would boil up onto the ice around your feet — this is not a good thing. If it hap-pens, odds are real good you will

shortly fall through. This also applies when you

drive your truck out on a lake in the early part of the season. Not all of the ice forms at the same time. This was driven home a few years ago up on Nipissing.

The snow was only ankle deep on the ice and there was lots of huts out. Most of them had a truck parked beside them. It was easy to follow the flagged trails, but they never seem to go were I need to go. My spot was about three miles off shore and away from the crowds.

The GPS told me we should cut holes right where we were, so I got out the auger, marched over to the front of the truck and carved our first hole. The auger spun about four times and plunged through. With that there was a cracking noise I heard over the sound of the ice auger motor. The ice was sinking and the water was boiling up out of the hole. At that point I didn’t know whether to run or wind my watch! By now the snow on the ice was floating around my feet. I put down the auger, hopped into the truck, fired it up, put it in reverse and backed about 300 feet away from the sink hole.

Now I was afraid to go back and get the ice auger that I had left on the ice by the ever-widening black spot. Turns out the ice back by the trails and other ice huts was over a foot thick, so I spent the day drill-ing holes over there.

It was two weeks before I went out on the lake exploring again. By then there was other trucks doing the same thing. Turns out it was better to let them be first.
