Derby Fishing With the Guys Photos by Scott Yetman

November in the Northwest means it’s time for the Jacobsen’s Marine Grady-White Salmon Derby held out of the Edmonds Yacht Club, WA. Scott Yetman has fished this tournament six years with family and friends on his Express 330, Off the Hook. This past year was the fifth that son Hunter Yetman, age nine, and Kyle Hoffman, ten, were onboard as well, and the boys’ five-pound, five-ounce catch earned them first place in the youth division. Here are their comments about the experience.

Q Hadyoubeenoutonthewaterthatearlybefore? Kyle: Yes, when we went

crabbing in past years.

QWereyousleepingonthewayout?Hunter: For five minutes then I woke up, went out of the cabin to see the sunrise and ate some breakfast.

Q Didyougoforthehealthyfoodorthedoughnuts? Kyle: I saw Hunter go for the doughnuts! Hunter: And I went for some cereal too.

Q Whenyouareoutfishing, howexcitingisthat? Hunter: When we catch a fish, it is pretty exciting. I think we caught four fish, and that was impressive because if we caught one more that would make one for each year Kyle and I have been doing the Derby.

Q Whatwasthemostexcitingpartoftheday? Kyle: Probably when I stuck my finger inside the fish’s mouth. Hunter: Holding the fish.

Q Whatdoyouknowaboutbaitsandlures? Hunter: I love the squids. Kyle: I know that they come in different colors and shapes.

Q Whatabouttheawardsceremony? Kyle: We were the fourth largest fish overall and the biggest in the kids’ category. Hunter: We won Nerf guns!

Classic Grady-WhiteLook at this 1967 Pamlico, one of the last wood lapstrake boats Grady-White made before fiber-glass production began in earnest in 1968! David Martin found her on eBay and enlisted the craftsmanship of George Hazzard, Wooden Boat Restoration, to bring her back to glory. Winner of "Best Outboard Boat" at the 2010 Antique & Classic Boat Festival, St. Michaels, MD. CANNONS MARINA, Longboat Key, FL, had a crowd for their Grady-White Customer Appreciation Day in January.

Q WhatisyourfavoritethingaboutGrady-Whites? Kyle: I like how they fit everything in. It’s not just a plain boat. Hunter: My favorite thing about Off the Hook is you can fish on it and it has a bunk you can sleep in.

QIfyourmomswereonthesefishingtrips, wouldyoubeupthatlate? Hunter: No!! We stay up 'til 10 or 11!

QHowbigafishwillyoucatchnextyear? Kyle: It’s called fishing, not catching. Hunter: I am sure we can catch at least one tiny fish. Kyle: I’d like to do the tuna derby off the coast, too.

Q Whenyouareparents, doyouthinkyouwilldofishingtripslikethis? Kyle: When I get a boat! We are lucky! Hunter: It was fun and interesting!

BACK AT THE DOCK after weigh-in and the catch is cleaned, Hunter and Kyle netted little fish with salmon eggs. “We were actually quite interested in the eggs. There were probably 2000!”

FIRST PLACE PRIZE OF DART TAG SET goes over big with the young winners.

“WE LIKE BUILDING FORTS IN THE CABIN!” The boys also like being able to bring all their gear aboard.

Putting an exclamation point on added boating freedom and an accent on the ultimate in boating comfort, the Freedom 335 dual console Grady-White debuted at the Miami International Boat Show in February, and gauging by the orders coming in she is a solid winner. This is the latest

addition to the complete Grady lineup for 2012, totaling eight dual consoles, seven walkaround cabin models, three express cabin models and nine center consoles–every one of which features our exclusive SeaV2® hull, and is ready to launch your fantastic Grady Life!

With the Freedom 335, Grady delivers a major WOW! factor with surprises like the deluxe bow seating with stow-able table, separate lounge console and stand-up head/shower console areas with cherry and holly soles, a new-look helm station with adjustable steering wheel, and expansive companion and cockpit seating with another stowable table and a folding countertop that along with a wet bar with refrigerator and sink (and grill option) provide the most in entertaining function. Clear the refreshments, retract the bench seat, fold away the aft seat, get out the rods and voila! The 335 can go from a lunch or cocktail cruise to a purebred fishing machine in minutes. The aft fish box is a whopping 166 quarts (157 l) that can be optionally equipped with a digitally controlled freezer-cooler feature. At the starboard bow there are an additional 230 quarts (218 l) of insulated storage. There’s a recessed freshwater shower on the tran-

som that’s great for cleaning reels or for a quick rinse off after water sports; a hot water heater is available for hot showers. Also at the transom is 32-gallon box that optionally can be a livewell. Owners will want to opt for the Freedom 335 hardtop and also the electronically operated SureShade® that extends to cover the entire aft cockpit (now that is one nifty feature)! For the crank-up-the-music, sun-and-fun set the standard stereo system has six speakers throughout the boat including two at the bow along with a remote system control. You can’t have the ultimate in versatili-ty without the storage to take all the gear along. Storage aboard the 335 is cavern-ous–the console areas offer room enough for camping gear, beach toys and more; there is bulk storage at your feet under the companion seating area as well as capacity under the bow seating for fishing tackle, skis, wetsuits and dive tanks. There are plenty of storage nets, drawers and other handy stow spots. Ask your dealer about complete specifi-cations for the stunning new Freedom 335 or any of the fabulous 2012 models, and visit www.gradywhite.com.

The Grady Life: Owners’ Clubs Here are highlights from recent Grady Owners’ Clubs events and outings. If you have Grady club information to share or are interested in

information about Grady clubs in your area, email [email protected]. Go to www.gradywhite.com for links to club websites.

Nearly 50 people enjoyed the Chesapeake Bay Grady-White Club’s 10th Annual Holiday Party in January at The Barn at Ulmstead on the Magothy River. The candlelit party room was accented by lighted snowmen, baskets of Grady Gear and plenty of goodies and gift certificates. After a sumptuous buffet, club sponsor representative Ron Young from Tri-State Marine announced that a club membership is being included with each new Grady sale, first year dues contributed by the dealership. He also presented a $2000 check to the club. President Frank Gomme reviewed the 2012 calendar of

events, and after raffle and door prizes were drawn, Al Tober cranked up the music and all made merry into the night.

The Lake Erie Grady Club added twelve Grady-White owners to their roster at the Cleveland Boat Show, where spon-sor South Shore Marine was exhibiting. (That’s in addition to 12 owners signed up at South Shore’s Open House in December.) Big thanks to Joe Talty, George Kussai, Jim Patneua, Frank Debelius, Dave Spangler, Bill Jeancola, Dana Shively and Mike Manion for manning the club table and to Tom Mack and crew for the set up.

Baert Marine, Middleton, MA, hosted over 60 folks at its Northeast Grady-White Owners Club February social to learn about events for the upcoming season–tall ships, beach barbecue, and whale watching are on the schedule. Club t-shirts are now available featuring their new logo!

The Southeastern Mariners Grady-White Club held their Rockfish Tournament at Fishing Bay Harbor Marina, November 19. First place over-all went to Dr. Joe Evers fishing his Express 305. The Ladies division was won by Ronda Utterback, and Youth’s first place went to Franklin Falls, age ll, and second to Jonathan Falls, age 12. The boys fished with their fathers aboard their granddad’s Tournament 19. The club is sponsored by Southeastern Marine, Richmond, VA.

The Tidewater Grady-White Club February meeting featured guest speaker Chris Breeden, service manager and Yamaha master technician with club

sponsor Norfolk Marine. Also that month the club revved up a membership drive with club representatives on hand at the Mid-Atlantic Sports and Boat Show at the Virginia Beach Convention Center. Club burgees are now available!

NORTHEAST GRADY-WHITE CLUB MEMBERS get into the spirit on a cold February day at Baert Marine, making plans for summer boating events.

FOR THEIR FIRST CLUB GATHERING WITH NEW SPONSOR SOUTH SHORE MARINE, THE LAKE ERIE GRADY-WHITE CLUB enjoyed a tropical themed holiday open house. Fun!

DR. JOE EVERS WON first place in the Southeastern Mariners Rockfish Tournament.

Sundog Rides Again By Mark SunnerAdventure 208 owners Mark and Barbara Sunner took delivery of their second 208 in February, at Taylor Marine Center, Milford, DE, after making a visit to the Grady-White plant in Greenville, NC, to see Sundog II in production.

We fish the inshore waters off the Delaware coast as well as the Indian River and Rehoboth and Delaware bays. The Adventure 208 is the perfect boat for the area I fish. It is not only capable out in the ocean, but it is able to navigate shallow waters. As people around here

know, the Indian River Inlet can get pretty nasty. I wanted a boat that I could feel confident in when the inlet kicks up, and my Adventure 208 gives me that confidence. My favorite ocean fishing spots are between 10 and 20 miles out. Although I

try to pick days when the sea conditions are good, often the weather can change and what was a smooth ocean on the way out turns to a choppy sea on the way in. The SeaV2® hull cuts through the chop and I can honestly say I have never had a wet ride from bow spray. My 1994 Adventure 208, Sundog, never let me down in the all the years that I owned it. In fact, I seriously considered re-powering with a new four-stoke engine. However, after seeing all the nice changes that Grady-White made since 1994, I became convinced that I wanted to buy a 2012 model. Working with Dirk and Dave at Taylor Marine, my local Grady-White dealership, made the pro-cess painless. The fact that my boat held a very good resale value allowed me to be able to afford to buy new.

Many of my friends asked me why I wasn't moving up to a bigger boat. I admit that I did look at some of the larger Gradys and liked what I saw, but in the end I had to reflect back over the 18 years I had my boat, and in all that time I never said that I wished I had bought a bigger boat. It was the perfect fishing platform for me. This time I’m getting a few more options, like trim tabs and a hardtop. The hardtop has the added benefits of more rod holders, better support for the drop curtains, and more elevation for the radio anten-na thus better reception. And let’s not forget, it looks great! Being able to see my boat being produced was the icing on the cake!

THE SUNNERS with their original Sundog

THE BRIGHT SKY welcomed Sundog II as she was delivered in Delaware.

BARB AND MARK SUNNER toured the plant to see their new Adventure 208 in production. “We were very impressed with the plant operations and the innovations that Grady-White has implemented in the manufacturing of your quality boats. We’ve always been Grady-White fans, but we're even more so now that we've had the plant tour. It is easy to see why Grady-White has such a large following.”

CATHY HODSON AND JOE MILLER went eeling for big stripers on the lower Eastern Shore near Cape Charles last December. Captain Miller’s Express 305, Miller Time, provided a great ride in the Bay chop and was an excel-lent fishing platform on a cold winter day.

DAVID AND WILMA KIESER’S TWO SONS AND FOUR SONS-IN-LAW made a quick trip to Fort Myers, Florida, from the Illinois cold to fish their new Canyon 366. They had a great time!

Lake DaysDear Anchorline:Going through my notes from last sum-mer I came across this picture of me with all my grandkids at Lake Hartwell, SC, and want you to know how much my family enjoys our Tournament 205! When they say nothing runs like a Grady it is the truth. We got this one new at Seels Outboard, Charleston, SC. Last March when I got out the boat for the season she turned over but would not crank. My son Marty called Seels and was put in touch with the shop fore-man, Rob, who asked several questions and told us where to start. We were able to figure out it was that the fuel pump needed cleaning out and Rob walked us through the steps. She cranked right up. Rob was more concerned that we were able to use the boat for our planned weekend trip than making a service sale. What a nice man!

Dear Grady-White Owner:

For smartphones

The winter boat shows provided a great opportunity to meet with Grady enthusiasts and we thank you for introducing yourselves when you visited our booths. These shows saw the introduction of the Freedom 285 dual console and highlighted the features of the entire 2012 line of ten cabin boats, nine center console models and all eight dual consoles. And, we blew ’em away in Miami where we stopped the show with the unveiling of the most stylish, versatile and largest outboard powered dual console built today: the Freedom 335, a 33-foot beauty that already has many folks dreaming about being

aboard their very own this boating season. Read about the 335 on Page 3! At several shows nationwide, representatives of Grady-White Owners’ Clubs were on hand to sign up new members to share the fun they have on and in the water. After all, boating is an activity made all the more enjoyable with others. Clubs have activities year ’round, as you can see in this Anchorline. This past year alone, 134 owners joined our clubs. Why don’t you! You’ll find a listing at gradywhite.com. Grady-White boats bring families and friends together for the best of times. See how much fun even the little guys have when they’re on board? Young Hunter Yetman and Kyle Hoffman can tell you how they enjoy the Grady Life! We hope you are enjoying the Grady Life, too. See you out on the water, very soon!
