River Rock Casino
“PLACE YOUR BETS!!” In April, The Granada Joined members of The Broadmoor for a trip to the River Rock Casino in Geyserville, CA. This is one of our most popular excursions, for obvious reasons. River Rock Casino is located in the heart of the wine country, nestled among the rolling hills of the Alexander Valley. The 62,000 square foot facil-ity offers 1,250 state-of-the-art slot machines, including video poker and progressives as well as 18 tables featuring Pai Gow Poker, Roulette, Blackjack, Three Card Poker and Mini Baccarat and Free Bingo Tuesdays. All the flashing lights and clanging bells bring to mind the full excitement of a night on the town in Las Vegas. The casino, also, plays host to a beer and wine bar and a sit-down restaurant with excellent food and service. We had a very com-fortable ride, in our 40 passenger air conditioned bus, and we made excellent time as we drove past some of So-noma County's most beautiful wineries. Several people won money while at the casino and one of The Granada residents even came away winning a whopping $20,000.00!! Not bad for a trip which was free to attend.

Heeeeeeer’s BILL!
This is William Truly although you all know him as “Bill:
Your friendly Dining Room Manager.” Bill originally hails
from Memphis, Tennessee. He was in the Navy from
1966—1974 where he rose to the rank of E5. Bill spent 13
months in Vietnam as a Machine Gunner and 2 1/2 years
on a nuclear submarine as a weapons specialist. He, also,
has a degree in History from Sacramento State University
and was a History and ESL teacher for 17 years. Bill has
done a lot of traveling and has seen much of the world but,
no place captured his heart like San Francisco and so he
decided to make this place his home. He came to work for
The Granada in 2007 and has continued to rise in statue
ever since. Bill is one of our most valued employees and
we consider ourselves to be very lucky to have him here at
The Granada.

It’s May, once again. Spring is in the air with Summer right around the corner. The month of May was named for the Greek goddess Maia, who was identified with the Roman era goddess of fertility, Bona Dea, whose festival was held in May.
Let’s roll out this months’ list of events. Sunday May 1st is May Day. The earliest May Day celebrations appeared in pre-Christian times, with the Floralia, festival of Flora, the Roman goddess of flowers, which traditionally involved a may-pole dance around a tall wooden pole with garlands of flowers and ribbons attached.
On Tuesday May 3rd at 3:15 pm we will be visited, once again, by the SONGBIRDS for their annual Spring concert. You won’t want to miss this.
On Thursday May 5th, at 2:30 pm Comcast Cable will be hosting a Cinco de Mayo themed party in our very own Music Room. Traditional Mexi-can appetizers will be served and you will have the opportunity to talk to a Comcast representative about setting up an account for yourself.
Sunday May 8th is Mothers Day. The Granada will have an extra special dinner planed for that night. Be sure to wish your mom a happy time on her day.
On May 18th we will be taking a field trip to the fabulous Winchester Mys-tery House. Come witness a house with a lack of any master building plan and see all the oddities in build-ing style which it possesses.
The Ice Cream Social will only be held once a month from now on. This month the date is Sunday May 29th. Make sure to join us for some friendly conversation and nice sweet treats.
And finally, Monday May 30th is Memorial Day. Look forward to en-joying a delicious, picnic style, lunch and a home cooked dinner complete with hot dogs, hamburgers, BBQ ribs, coleslaw, corn on the cob and apple pie.
Note from the Editor
Although they are pronounced and spelled (virtually) the same,
“May Day” and “mayday” mean two radically different things.
May Day marks the halfway point between the first day of
spring and the summer solstice. Celebrated on May 1st, May
Day dates back to the days of the Romans and used to involve
many pagan rituals. Today, it is mostly celebrated by dancing
around a “maypole.” Conversely, the word “mayday” is interna-
tionally recognized as an SOS distress signal. The word derives
from the French 'M'aidez' meaning 'help me'. It is used to sig-
nal a life-threatening emergency by many groups, such as po-
lice forces, pilots, firefighters, and transportation organizations.
The call is always given three times in a row ("mayday-mayday-
mayday") to prevent mistaking it for some similar-sounding
phrase under noisy conditions and to distinguish an actual may-
day call from a message about a mayday call.
