It’s a new month but the song sounds the same. I do have a few things to report from
our board meeting. For starters, the board voted to adjust the required hours for
recertification for this year. The hours can be completed in any combination of volunteer
hours or continuing education as long there is a minimum of 18. We are not looking to reduce
the total number of hours yet since we still have 6 months to go this year but, this will help
those that have more opportunities to get one type of hour over the other. If you are an intern
working on certification, there is no change.
We have also decided to go ahead with our Monthly recognition drawings for Volunteer
hours. So, I would like to congratulate the following people.
March- William Nodine
April-Keith Muschalek
May-Beth Henry
June- Joyce Fox
Winners were drawn by my children. You will be receiving a gift card in the mail soon.
The ability to have safe Monthly meetings still seems a long way away however we are
reaching out to the scheduled speakers to see if we can have them record their presentations
so that members can view these in their own time. Hopefully, these will be more user friendly
than some of the live streaming options.
We did have a very successful lunch and learn this month presented by Liz Romero. We
had 24 people attend the Microsoft teams meeting. This was an increase of 4 from the
previous month. I had the opportunity to do a few dry runs with Liz to help get more
comfortable with the program before the big day. We had a fun time and I think her
presentation went well. If you would like to attempt presenting a lunch and learn Please
contact Kay McElveen. We can do a few trial runs to make sure you are comfortable.
Thank you everyone for hanging in there. We still have a very active organization despite
our restrictions. Our hours aren’t nearly what they were last year at this time, but they are
strong enough to show we are still getting it done and I know your efforts are making a
difference!!
Jerry

Cabin Fever in Texas Since I wrote last month’s article, I took some of my own advice and took a couple of day
trips. The first one was a 2-hour trip from Marion to New Berlin, La Vernia, Sutherland Springs,
Stockdale and back to Marion. That was too short so the next one was from Marion to Port
Lavaca. It lasted 9 hours which ended up being too long, but it was worth the effort.
Once in Port Lavaca there were several stops to see wildflowers, the beach, and a place to
have a picnic lunch. This was a park along the bay. As usual, the breeze was blowing so it was cool
under the large covered pavilion that had several picnic tables. From there you could see the
pelicans, herons, egrets and sea gulls flying over the water and perched on old pilings
sunning. When the sea breeze afternoon showers began to form it was time to head back
home. The one food stop was at Daylight Donuts in Gonzales for breakfast and lunch dessert. If
you are in Gonzales be sure you stop there. The kolaches, cinnamon twists and long johns were
wonderful!
