Parish Family:

I have fond memories of what was once called “Decoration Day.” During our youth, my father always made sure that the graves of our relatives in his native town of Danbury, Connecticut were properly adorned for this day – which we now call “Memorial Day.” The origin of this “holiday” has its roots in the tradition of honoring who sacrificed their lives for our freedom in the field of battle; but, by extension, it can also be a time to honor all our beloved dead. There are many stories of heroism associated with our war victims; but there are also lasting effects of war that really never go away. My uncle was injured during World War II and never wanted to witness or hear fireworks on the fourth of July. Sometimes a person will ask me how to obtain some sense of peace. I remind them that the peace that Christ brings is not a cessation of war or conflict but the enduring presence of God within that spurs one on to work for justice and reconciliation. An example of this is provided for us in today’s first reading – the first “council” of the Church. These fathers announced to the growing Gentile believers that “it is the decision of the Holy Spirit and us” not to place on them any unnecessary burden. At times we impose on ourselves unrealistic expectations. Thus, these words of Jesus are most consoling and invigorating:

“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give it to you. Do not

let your hearts be troubled or afraid.” John 14:27

Yours in Christ,

Sixth Sunday of Easter

MANY THANKSMy heart is filled with profound gratitude for all the prayers and greetings in celebration of my fortieth anniversary of ordination. I am especially grateful for the beautiful liturgy, the May crowning, and the lovely reception sponsored by the Sodality! – Father Foley

11am Daily Mass Schedule ChangeWe have been blessed with the opportunity to offer four daily Masses Monday through Friday and two on Saturday for many years. We have also had four priests available for these Masses who live in the rectory. In recent months, Msgr. O’Connell has been unable to participate in daily Masses for health reasons. We also celebrate Masses in five health care facilities each month. After consultation with members of the Worship Commission and with the priests, I have decided to cancel the least attended of these daily Masses – the 11:00am – on a regular basis beginning June 1. We will, of course, continue to celebrate funeral Masses at that hour. Change is never easy but often necessary. There are 12 noon daily Masses at St. Ann’s, Little Flower and Our Lady of Lourdes. Please check their websites. Thank you for your understanding. – Father Foley

Caring For Creation Meeting, Tuesday, May 28 7:00pm Duffy Parish, Main Level (An Exciting New Ministry)Please join fellow parishioners for a “Community Conversation” on Tuesday, May 28 at 7pm. We will discuss how we can care for creation both as individuals and as a community at Blessed Sacrament Parish. The program will include a reflection on Pope Francis’ encyclical on climate change, and how we can live our faith through respectful communication on climate change within our community and at the national level. Questions or for more information please contact Pat Kavanaugh in the Social Concerns Office, 202.449.3987 or [email protected].

HOME BLESSINGS and Enthronement of THE DIVINE MERCY

as King of Home and FamilyWould You Like To Have Your Home Blessed and Enthroned by Jesus, The Divine Mercy as King and Ruler of home and family?A long time tradition in the Catholic Church is having our home blessed with the new waters of Easter. The blessing prays that your home is filled with God’s Peace and Holiness. A much more recent tradition is having Jesus, The Divine Mercy Enthroned As King of Home and Family. (On Divine Mercy Sunday, the Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament Parish was Enthroned a Divine Mercy Parish!)

If you wish to have your home blessed and/or enthroned then kindly e-mail Deacon Leo Flynn and include your name(s), address, phone number, and e-mail address and send it to [email protected]. Also, kindly specify which days/dates and times may work best per your schedule to have your home blessed & enthroned (week days are available) and whether you are or are not a registered parishioner of our Parish. Those without computers may contact Deacon Leo directly at 703.328.4762 and leave your name and telephone number (speak slowly and clearly) in his voice mail and he will return your call.
