SECRETARY/TREASURER’S NOTE
As the summer comes to an end, a new show season begins. Along with the new show season
we have a new club secretary, Janet Ritchie. As members, please bear with us through this transi-
tion as we attempt to make it clean and quick. Let’s thank Sonja Papakee for her hard work over
the last year. If you are thinking about a fall convention trip to Texas, consider car pooling with
your fellow members to help defer cost. It should prove to be an excellent trip. Watch the Hawk-
eye News for final sweepstakes points, upcoming show bills, and further information on the state
convention. Make sure you check out the changes to the website that Becky Stock has made and
also check out our Facebook page for further information. If you have specific questions on the
state convention show site, contact Sally Randall as our show chairperson. As always, if you have
any questions or concerns, feel free to contact me at any time either on my cell phone, email, or
through Facebook. Good Luck in the upcoming show season!
Wesley Nelson, ISRBA President
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER
HAWKEYE NEWS
Thank you to Sonya Papakee for
being secretary/treasurer for the past year;
it was not an easy task.
At the June 14th Directors meeting
of the ISRBA I was appointed your new
secretary/treasurer by our President, Wes
Nelson. I feel with at least 25 years of
being involved in the rabbit world I can
perform the duties of the office. If you
have comments or suggestions how to
improve the ISRBA or this position,
please submit them to me. I have set up a
new e-mail strictly for ISRBA and it is
[email protected]. My cell
phone is 641-891-2397, feel free to call if
you have a concern.
Janet J. Ritchie, ISRBA Secretary/
Treasurer
928 Nixon St.
Knoxville, Iowa 50138
The fair season is coming to a close and my family
is starting to gear up for the State and National Conven-
tions. Youth can look in this issue for all the information
you’ll need about participating in the ISRBA Royalty
contest and the youth contests at Nationals. I strongly rec-
ommend participation in both those events as they are a
great learning experience and a lot of fun.
I recently posted on the ISRBA Facebook group a
form for show reports which I will be emailing out to
show secretaries soon. The idea behind the form is to
make publishing show results a much easier and more ef-
ficient process. As it stands now, each secretary sends
their reports in a different format, some of which are us-
able and some are not. This means I spend a lot of time
reformatting or even retyping show reports. An additional
benefit of the new form will be the uniformity and consis-
tency of the published finished product.
Thanks in advance for your patience as I try this
new method out!

Steve Westercamp presented a problem at the State Show of when the youth are trying to show their
rabbits and take the Royalty and Educational Tests. He stated it is such a problem for the youth to be in two
different places at the same time. He suggested would it be possible for the youth to show first followed by
the open classes? Ken Smalley made the motion for all youth rabbits to be shown first on Saturday only, sec-
onded by Frank Gale, motion carried.
President Nelson then brought to the Board’s attention the issues with the present secretary/treasurer
and that he had notified her to bring all materials to this meeting and she would be replaced. His duty is then
to appoint a new secretary the two year term and he is appointing Janet Ritchie.
Janet would like to thank Sonja for taking over the position without a lot of help and maybe some of
her guidance was not accurate but felt she deserved a big thank you.
Show tables were discussed and Wes thought North Central would be providing them. Bobbi said she
would talk to Randy but he was never reimbursed for last year for his fuel, time and effort. Discussion fol-
lowed with a motion by Dave Ritchie to pay Randy Coats $100.00 for his time. Seconded by JoBeth Harden.
Discussion followed. Dennis Dammann stated he felt $100.00 would not cover the fuel cost, wear and tear on
his equipment. Dennis made the motion to increase Randys’ compensation to $200.00, seconded by Dave
Ritchie. Motion carried. The first motion was then voted on and passed.
A discussion followed as to sponsorship of tables and not enough people to help tear down. Frank sug-
gested hiring a group to help with the tear down. It was finally decided to take this to the Show Committee to
make a decision on.
Motion by Frank Gale to adjourn, seconded Don Dowd, motion carried.
Meeting adjourned at 12:00 noon.
Respectfully submitted,
Janet Ritchie, Secretary

One quick announcement. The Iowa State
Dutch Rabbit Club is in the beginning stages
of organizing a small raffle that will be held
at the Iowa State Convention this fall. Breed-
ers are coming together to donate some nice
quality animals to hopefully encourage some
new youth to join our wonderful breed. Tick-
ets will be sold to youth only, and only youth
are eligible to win. Both our open and youth
exhibitors in Iowa are nationally competitive,
and the lines and competition established
here are very strong. We realize this can be
intimidating to any of those youth thinking
about starting this breed. We are hoping that
this can spark some interest and maybe get
some nice quality animals to some new
faces, or even some familiar faces that are
around but just haven’t gotten their toes wet
in this breed. Any open Dutch breeders that
aren’t on our Facebook and missed our dis-
cussion, but would like to help with dona-
tions or running the raffle, as well as anyone
that may just have some interest or questions,
feel free to contact Kandy Reif, who is spear-
heading the organization of this event. As far
as questions or inquiries about Dutch rabbits,
we have many open and youth breeders who
have been very successful in this breed that
have a wealth of knowledge and passion that
I am sure they would love to share with you!
As our motto says, “you can’t beat the
Dutch!”

Hello All!
I was really hoping that this issue would include the complete final sweepstakes standings for the 2013-2014
year, sadly as you will see, it unfortunately does not. By the time the Hawkeye News deadline arrived I hadn’t yet
received one of the reports from a June show, and there are two shows that the reports did not include everything I
needed to properly calculate points. In the latter case the secretary and I have been communicating and hopefully we
will have everything together soon. The next issue will probably be filled to the brim with numbers for both the final
sweepstakes year that has ended, and the beginning points of the new season. For those members that are on the IS-
RBA facebook page, I will upload the final numbers there as soon as I have that info. Thank you for your patience.
Speaking of points and information, I have had several secretaries contact me ahead of time asking exactly
what I need to calculate my points. I appreciate this as it prevents delay with back and forth communication and
miscommunication weeks after things should be received and calculated. Most shows now use programs that are
fantastic at helping secretaries stay organized in figuring these points. One thing I have noticed however, is it seems
like many of these programs do not figure meat pen and single fryer points, so I ask that show secretaries double
check this before mailing me reports. They often have to be added up by hand. On top of this, and the regular points
each exhibitor receives under each breed, I also need the list of breed winners and total number of animals shown in
each breed. This number helps me figure out the Best of Breed and Best Opposite of Breed bonus points and who
they should be awarded to. Lastly, another thing that seems to be a common section missing from reports I receive,
is the best 6 class, best 4 class, and best in show winners and the total number of each category. Hopefully this helps
those secretaries that have been asking, and maybe some that haven’t but weren’t quite sure.
Also PLEASE let me know if your name is misspelled in the standings. I want to help make sure that when
these names and numbers get sent in for eligible sweepstakes awards they will be correct. On this same note, I
would like to take a second to thank the Dammans for all the hard work and effort they put into doing our awards
every year. They recently announced they will stepping away from doing our awards after this fall. The next time
you see them, please take a minute or two of your time to thank them for all the time they have taken over the past
years to do our sweepstakes awards. We appreciate it!
A last note on the sweepstakes front, for those who are able, email is my preferred method of communica-
tion. Not only do I work, when I am home I’ve got two little boys I’m chasing, so sometimes it’s difficult for me to
answer the phone, and even when I do, its not always possible for me to sit down and rifle through papers at that
time. I know there are still some ISRBA members that do not use the internet, and this is understandable, but for
those who do, email makes it much easier on me to be able to sit down and reply and dig for answers when I have a
moment. For those who do not have this email, it is [email protected]. Some people have been emailing
my old personal account, my replies from that account have not been very prompt as I’ve been trying to step away
from that one, and transition fully into this outlook account.
