Capacity Building on dairy cattle husbandry (breeds and breeding, feeding, Pasture/fodder establishment and preservation, disease and disease control, milking techniques, cow shed construction/Housing and calf rearing).

Follow up activities on pasture/fodder establishment and preservation demo plots initiated by MilkIT project.
Identify AI service providers available within the project area and link with Faida MaLi.
Facilitate purchase of improved bulls/ Heifers and or link farmers to multiplication farms.

Achievements Cont….12 key modal farmers(6M &6F) were identified from 6 groups with respect of their gender.(Twatwatwa, Madoto, Ulaya Kibaoni, Ihombwe/Mfilisi, Parakuyo and Mbwade).

24 Artificial Inseminators service providers within the project area were identified, however 9 are functioning and 15 are not functioning due to insufficient seeds money to run the business.
Achievements Cont…6 pasture/fodder demo plots established by MilkIT project were visited;
3 demo plots were successful grown (Mbuzii, Ubiri & Kibaya)
2 demo plots in Sindeni and Mbwade were not grown well due to late seasoning.
Individual plots in Twatwatwa was not grown due to long drought.
Challenges
High demand for pasture seeds from livestock Keepers on the appropriate pasture grown to specific locality with limited resources.
Low participation of farmers during trainings resulted by most of participants were away from their homestead searching/seeking for grazing land and water for their livestock. (transhumance)
Key lessons More women are involved in the project activities
compared to men due to the nature of this project.(More milk by and for the poor).
In village/ site trainings has encouraged more women participation in training compared to men.
Prior and clear communications to beneficiaries on the project do’s and don’ts will minimize misconception during implementation of project activities.
