rested in Gordon’s Baylast Tuesday by theSAPS’s K9-unit after5 307 shelled abalonewas found in a ToyotaFortuner in which hewas travelling.AccordingtoWONico
Beukes, spokesperson for the Gordon’sBay police, the man was travelling fromHawston along Sir Lowry’s Pass Road inthe dark coloured Toyota Fortuner whenhe was pulled over by police at 09:50. TheFortuner, thought to be a courtesyvehicle,
was searched and 18 bags of shelled abalo-ne (5 307) with an estimated value of morethan R2 million was found. His next courtappearance will be today (5 November).Later the same day at 11:00 the K9-Unit
also raided a suspected abalone-drying fa-cility in Asla Park onthe N2. According toprovincial spokesper-son, Capt FC vanWyk,neighbouring busi-nesses reported thesmell of abalone in thevicinity. A total of 10638 dried abalone
worth R1,7 million and weighing 482 kg,were found in the building in Asla Parkand confiscated. Drying racks, fans, scalesand other equipment used to process thedelicacy were also found at the desertedpremises.No arrests have yet been made.

Illegal dumping still a problemAfteranarticleabout illegaldumping inSirLowry’s Pass was published in the Helder-berg Gazette (“Dumping an eyesore”, Hel-derberg Gazette, 29 October 2013), the Ga-zette this week noticed that the area sur-rounding the waste container in NieulandRoad, was clean.
However, a container down the road oppositethe Rastakamp informal settlement remains aneyesore, with waste surrounding the container.When asked if the City of Cape Town has adjust-ed measures to keep this area clean, the City’sMayoral Committee Member for Utilities,Councillor Ernest Sonnenberg said no. “Thecontainer is serviced twice weekly. Specialisedequipment for the clearing of bulkier items,dumped illegally, is deployed across the metroas frequently as resources allow.”
A local resident in the area says people fromother areas contribute to the problem by stilldumping their waste at the containers.

Lwandle on thebrink of protestDALEEN FOUCHÉ
A visit to Lwandle by highranking municipal officialson Friday was cut short fol-lowing rumours that the com-munity was mobilising for aprotest.
The officials, from the of-fice of Cape Town mayor, Pa-tricia de Lille, and council-lors were evacuated whenthey reached OnverwacthRoad where tensions alleged-ly grew.
But, according to localward councillor JongidumoMaxheke, the incident was amisunderstanding, and thecommunity was not planninga protest. The visit was in-tendedtocreateaplatformforresidents to voice their griev-ances related to service deliv-ery with the mayor.
The officials arrived inLwandle on Friday morningand were on a walk-aboutthrough the area when theywere evacuated.
A resident of Lwandle whowished to remain anony-mous, says the communitywas merely gathering toshare their grievances, whenthe officials “ran away”.
Hesaysthecommunitywasnot planning to protest butrather wanted to show offi-cials the “terrible” living con-
ditions in the Lwandle infor-mal settlement.
He says the communitywere expecting de Lille to vis-it Lwandle and became upsetwhen she did not show.
Solly Malatsi, de Lille’sspokesperson,says the mayorhad to deal with pressingcouncil matters and wastherefore no longer able to at-tend that meeting.
“This was communicatedto the leaders.”
“To showcase her commit-ment to listen to the concernsof the community, she dele-gated representatives fromher office continue with themeeting in her absence.”
According to Maxheke, the“burning issues” in the com-munity are a lack of housingand electricity.
He says the lack of electri-cal connections creates a dan-gerous situation, becausepeople try to make illegal con-nections.
The Lwandle residentagreed, saying that the lack ofhouses in the area is a bigproblem.
He confirmed that severalLwandle residents took partin a mass protest in the CapeTown city centre on Wednes-day 30 October where severalshops and vendors’ stallswere vandalised.

I had saved every photo I have taken in thepast eight years on this little box.
This letter is to express my sincerest grati-tude to My Heroes!
Firstly, I would like to thank the officer whoanswered when I called 10111 shortly after theincident.
Despite my adrenaline and shock, he was ex-tremely polite, kept the questions short andsweet and immediately sent a unit out to whereI dropped off the suspect.
I am sorry for not thinking of asking thename of the “angel on the line” but if you read
this, thank you for putting my mind at easeat such a stressful time and for your patience.
Secondly, to Constable Khobe and ConstableFelix, from Lwandle Police station for yourquick response, your calm and professionalmanner and for making my situation seem likethe most important mission of your day.
Abig thankyoutoSergeantJack, thesmilingangel of Lwandle Police station, for the effi-cient and gentle manner in which you handledmy report, despite the absolute chaos aroundyou. With the adrenaline subsiding and theemotions starting to kick in, your smile andchatting kept me calm.

Iwouldalsoliketoexpressmyheartfeltgrati-tude to the two gentleman and two women whohad been so observant and helpful in providingthe direction in which the suspect had gone aswell as his name and where he was likely tohead with the item.

No home visits over registration weekendPreparations in the Western Cape for the Reg-istrationWeekendfor theupcomingelections,which is scheduled for 9 and 10 November, areon track.
“Our operations are in place, however thereis a misconception that IEC officials will beavailable to register people at their homesover the weekend if they apply to an IEC officeto do so due to illness, senior age or an inflic-tion that would prevent them from visiting aregistration station over that weekend. Thisis unfortunately not possible before or over
the registration weekend,” said CourtneySampson, provincial electoral officer.
People who have requested a home registra-tion will be visited by IEC officials after regis-tration weekend. These persons include thoseresiding in communal homes for senior citi-zens and frail care institutions. Sampson saysin the past the IEC received requests for homevisits from able bodied people, which causesa strain on their resources. Vanessa Kerschhoff, from CareyPark in Somerset West, says her sonVanito (8) started school this year atthe Gloria Botha School, a privateschool forchildrenwith learningdis-abilities.She says she is thankful for the op-
portunity he has been granted andthe dedication of the teachers there,which resulted in him showing goodprogress.However, he has not been attend-
ing school for the past month, as hismotherwasunable topayhis tuition.Vanessa suffers from a disease
called De Quervain’s tenosynovitis,whichmakes her hands barely func-tional as she is unable to hold items.In 2009, an operation to treat this
condition was unsuccessful and thenerve in her wrist was severed.She struggles to pay the R950 for
Vanito’s monthly fees as her onlysourceof incomeisherR1260disabil-ity grant and her son’s grant of the
same amount.Vanessa explains that Vanito’s
grant is used exclusively to cater forhis needsAccording to Vanessa, Vanito was
diagnosed with cerebral palsy at 11months. Hewas born prematurely at35 weeks, weighing only 1,5kg.He only has 5% vision, a severe
speech impediment and has difficul-ty balancing himself.Vanessa finds raising two sons on
adisability grant challenging, not al-lowinghertoprovideVanitowiththeeducation he needs.Smiling she describes Vanito as
happy, well-mannered child. He’sverysensitive tosound,shesays,andcannot handle loud noise.“He is the light of my life and al-
ways puts a smile onmy face. Every-onewhomeets him, falls in lovewithhim.”Vanessa says if Vanito does not at-

toir sports field in Strand and itis customary to slaughter sheepas part of the celebration.According to Shamiel Davids,
chairperson of the trust, morethan 500 people attended theluncheon.Davids says theywere also able
toperformthe traditional animalslaughtering on the field underthe close supervisionof theSPCAand with the approval of the mu-

Helderberg club cricket off to explosive startClub cricket in the Helderberg got off to anexplosive start with some thrilling T20 ac-tion and some impressive performances byplayers in the two-day league matches.
Judging from performances from players inthe local clubs to date this season should proveto be a good one for most of the local clubs.
The five cricket clubs in the Helderberg whoare playing in the various Western ProvinceCricket Association’s leagues this season are:HelderbergCricketClub(1Cdivision),RawsonSomerset West, Hottentots Holland and Macas-sar (2 A division) and Sir Lowry’s Pass (2 B di-vision).
The2013–’14cricketseasonintheHelderbergstarted with the inaugural and very successfulPeter Stuurman T20 Tournament. Helderberg,Somerset West, Macassar and Hottentots Hol-land cricket clubs were invited to the tourna-ment which show cased the impressive arrayof cricketing talent in the Helderberg.
Spectators were treated to some thrillingmatches which eventually saw old rivals Hel-derberg play Somerset West in the final.
The hard-fought match could’ve gone eitherway but in the end Somerset West prevailedand won the nail biter by seven runs.
The league T20 followed and the local clubs
again showed good form in this format of thegame which was followed directly by the twoday league.
The cricketers from the local clubs found theinitial transition from T20 matches to the twoday league very difficult.
Thanks to a very determined fight back byHelderbergtheywereabletodrawwithMilner-ton in their first two-day away game.
The draw was chiefly thanks to opener Gary-Jon Sylvester (114) and stalwart Vincent Castle(102) who chalked up a partnership of 155 aswell as a much needed 50 runs by Ebbie Latief.
Somerset West found the going against Ry-lands tough and lost the match by an inningsand 50 runs. Although disappointed theyvowed to bounce back in their next two-daymatch with a better performance.
Macassar who played against Brooklyn Tel-kom put up a hard fight but eventually lost thematch by 74 runs. Young up and coming Macas-sar cricketer Cameron Mitchell excelled in thematch and was man of the match with his 29notoutbinthefirst inningsand23inthesecondand with bowling figures of 10-2-23 in the firstinnings and 22-3-11 in the second.
With superb all round skills such as thisyoung Cameron is sure to have a long and suc-cessful cricket career.
Tony Sylvester, captain and veteran wicket keeper for the club’s fourth team, also known as the ghost squad(because they’re only seen on Saturdays when they play matches) takes a delivery behind the stumps duringtheir recent match against Brooklyn Telkom which Helderberg won by 10 wickets.
