Literacy
One day in your life…
Let’s WRITE a little bit every day….• Most of these tasks require 2 paragraphs of 3-6 sentences each day.• Your writing should be well presented and checked for capital letters,
punctuation and spelling.
Day 1Gilmerton Primary School receives promotional posters advertising an educational visit. Design the poster to be eye-catching. Use persuasive language.
Day 2As the class teacher, you decide to go on the visit. Write a letter to the children’s parents and carers clearly explaining the timings, cost, reason for the visit etc. Remember to use a letter format.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G0EXT89D4Jk
Day 3 When the class arrive, they are given a leaflet outlining important information they will need to know on the day –health and safety, locations, regulations etc. Write a set of instructions. Think about layout (perhaps bullet points) and imperative (bossy) verbs.
Day 4You are one of the children who had a great day. Write a diary entry about your visit. Remember to write in the 1st
person and the past tense. (Dear Diary)https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n6_Gg_1riow
Day 5You are one of the children who had a terrible day! Write a diary entry about your visit. Remember to write in the 1st
person and the past tense. Try to refer to the same events as the other diary entry.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n6_Gg_1riow

Science
This week for Science we will be investigating the importance of hand washing, in order to prevent the spread of germs. Your task this week is to conduct a simple experiment at home (do not worry if this is not possible, as I have attached a video of this experiment above).
For this experiment you will need a small bowl of water, pepper and soap.
Sprinkle a small amount of pepper into the bowl of water (the pepper represents germs).Place an unwashed finger into the bowl of water and observe what happens to the pepper. Did the pepper move?
Remove your finger from the water and check if any pepper is on your finger. Cover the same finger in soap and place it back into the bowl of water and observe what happens to the pepper.
Did the pepper move this time?Remove your finger and check if any pepper is on your finger with the soap.
After conducting the experiment you should answer the following keyquestions.
1. What happened to the germs (pepper) when you placed your unwashedfinger into the water?
2. What happened to the germs (pepper) when you placed your washed fingerinto the water?
3. What did you learn from conducting this experiment?
4. Why do you think it is important that we are regularly washing our hands?
5. When should we be washing our hands?
6. How can you relate this experiment to Coronavirus?

Fun home learning for whole family:
• Treasure hunts: Hide a variety of challenges or calculations around the house. Children have to find and solve each one to get a prize.
• Sorting objects: Gather a variety of household objects and challenge your child to sort them into groups. How many different ways can you sort them? What criteria can you use? Can you think of anything else that would fit into each group?
• Make a board game: Challenge your child to make their own board game, such as their own version of snakes and ladders, or a quiz game using a subject they are very familiar with.
• Turn the tables: Invite your child to be the teacher and teach you something you don’t know!
