Student Journal/Portfolio for Unit 44 Vocational Experience
Work placement journal
Your placement provides you with a unique opportunity to develop your skills and
demonstrate your ability.
You are responsible for ensuring that you understand the rules of your organisation and it is
your responsibility to follow them. You also agree to participate fully in the placement
experience according to your ability and not to take part in any activity which you feel you
are not trained to cope with.
As evidence to support your learning you are asked to write a placement journal.
How to write your journal
At the end of the day reflect on the day’s events and keep a diary of what happened. You
can use prose, notes, drawings, mind maps, tables, photos or any format you find useful. NB
if you use photos ensure you gain appropriate consent and do not take photos of service
users.
See next page for more detailed information.
Your Portfolio
This is will also make up your portfolio, so ensure you attach the organisation’s policies and
procedures to the back. Use the blank pages to attach leaflets, posters or anything else that
you think is relevant about your work experience placements.

What to include in your journal
Try and relate situations you have been involved in at your work placement to what you
have learned in college.
EXAMPLE: In Unit 3 Health & Safety you will have learnt about laws such as the Data
Protection Act. At your work experience placement you might see how the organisation
deals with the Data Protection of their clients/service users. When you write your diary
entry, make sure you link the two things. So your diary entry might say: “The manager
makes sure all the contact details for each child is locked in a cabinet in his/her office, this
is to comply with the Data Protection Act that we learnt about in Unit 3 Health & Safety.”
YOU WOULD THEN GO ON TO EXPLAIN HOW THIS KEEPS THE CHILDREN SAFE.
*This is one example. You should relate MANY situations at your work placement to
MANY units you have covered at college.
Your reflections should include:
Your contributions in the setting (P3, P4)
What did you actually do?
Your own feelings (P3, P4)
How did you feel about what you did?
Views of others on your performance (both staff and users of the service) (P3, P4, M2)
What have the staff and users of the service said about your contributions?
The influence of others on your contributions (both staff and users of the service)
(P3, P4, D2)
How have the staff and users of the service influenced your work? Did they give you
direct instructions? Did they respond to you in a certain way which then caused you to
work in a certain way?
The difference your contributions made to users of the service and staff (M2)
Did your work make a difference to the staff? Did you perform tasks that helped the
4
staff or enabled them time to get on with other tasks? Did your work make a difference
to the service users? Did you perform tasks that helped them in a practical way and/or
an emotional way? *You MUST reflect and explain how your contributions benefitted
TWO users of the service for M2.
Self development (P3, P4, D2)
Have you personally developed through any aspect of the work you have done? Have
you gained in confidence or self esteem? Have you learned a new skill? Have you gained
any aspirations or goals because of the work you have done?
You should also talk to as many people as you can to find out about the following and
include these in your journal:
The Care Standards Act and how it applies to the setting
The Care Value Base and how it applies to the setting.
(Here are the components of the Care Value Base:)
Anti-discriminatory practice
Confidentiality
Rights to dignity, independence, safety
Equality and diversity
Protection from abuse
Effective communication
Individualised care
Include as much detail of practical experience and involvement as you can. This journal can
be produced at interview to demonstrate your ability to relate theory to practice.
