So you are thinking about taking your first AP class?
AP teachers recommend from experience the following student traits that are necessary for success in an AP class at NHS. Please self-reflect and consider…
**AP Exam registration will be in Fall 2019 for the spring 2020 AP Exams
9
Personal Traits:● Self-motivated● Reading text for understanding● Strong written skills● Critical Thinking● Proactive in seeking help/getting questions answered● Class engagement/participation● Proactive in communicating with teachers● Willingness to be a contributing group member for projects/labs● Willingness to challenge yourself and have realistic expectations● Strong test scores● Intention of taking the AP Exam in May● Can handle the rigor of a college class
Northville High SchoolClass of 2021 Registration for 2019-2020 school year
Additional points to consider:● Your entire schedule load. Ask yourself not just can you handle a
specific AP class, but can you balance/handle the entire rigor of the schedule you are selecting?
○ We have seen many students struggle in classes because they jump from an on-level schedule to multiple Honors/AP/IB classes and cannot manage all of the expectations at once
● The majority of the grade earned in an AP class is based on tests and projects/labs. Ask yourself how your grades have been determined in previous classes? Recognize that HW, classwork, and extra credit are NOT large parts of an earned grade in an AP class.

Course Name Changes for next year: No longer offering a standalone IB SL1, IB HL1 or IB HL2. Students wanting HL will take the AP Calc/IB HL Analysis 1 and Honors Calc 2/IB HL Analysis 2. Those courses are basically what AP Calc and Honors Calc 2 have been. Students wanting the SL sequence will take Pre Calc next year and the following year will take the "Calculus/IB SL Math Analysis" course.
IB SL 2 name will not change to "Calculus/IB SL Math Analysis" until 2020-21. However, we are still letting students know that more than half the content of SL 2 is Calculus, so we will be recommending lots of on-level Precalc students for that course again.
Speak to your math teacher for a recommendation & secure teacher signature. Refer to the Course Catalog for Flow Chart and help in sequencing.
**Sequences listed above are not for everyone - especially transfer students. Verify sequence and pre-reqs with the Course Catalog, your teacher and counselors to ensure proper placement. Some courses can double as an elective
