Dear Friends of Senior Services of Alexandria,
SSA has continued to grow with the population of seniors and their needs. Achieving our goals takes the efforts of our incredible staff, caring volunteers, city and government partners, fellow community organizations, leaders, and our talented board of directors all working together. Behind those helping hands are the donations that keep the “wheels” of our current programs moving forward and ignite new ideas and programs.
Here are just a few highlights from 2016/2017:
The MOW program expanded its outreach to Alexandria’s immigrant population, especially the West End’s Ethiopian community. SSA has been very proactive in advocacy for the program in the face of potential Federal budget cuts.
Groceries to Go Program: Thanks to both Giant and Harris Teeter, groceries are delivered every two weeks. In the Fall of 2016, SSA extended the program to seniors on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). There are currently 34 volunteers who shop for and deliver groceries to over 50 seniors.
Senior Academy: SSA held the second Senior Academy class. This four-week program explains how the City operates, what services are available to seniors, and how they can get involved.
Silver Service Card: SSA is actively recruiting new businesses in Old Town and the West End of the city to participate in this free program for seniors. Alexandria seniors 60+ can receive discounts at 30 businesses throughout the City.
Gala: Jack and John Taylor and the Charity Family were honored with our Generation to Generation Award, and Fran and Gant Redmon received the special Community Service Award.
50th Anniversary: An Advisory Committee has been convened to plan the celebration of SSA’s 50th anniversary and development of a new endowment fund.
It is exciting to see how SSA continues to develop as an organization. Thank you for your part in our growth and your continued support!
Sincerely,
Lynnwood CampbellChairman, Board of Directors
SSA’s Connections to the Community
Since its inception in 1968, SSA has served as a vital connection for seniors in the Alexandria community. As the senior population continues to grow, SSA’s programs and services will grow as well to help fill the “gap” when older residents have nowhere else to turn. Here are the
current SSA services and programs:
SENIOR NUTRITION PROGRAMS
Meals on Wheels
A life-sustaining program that allows seniors who are unable to leave their homes, or who have difficulty preparing a meal, to have two healthy meals a day
delivered to their homes. Meals are delivered 365 days a year, including holidays, by over 350 volunteers. SSA
is expanding its outreach to provide the service to immigrant communities through a translation service
that allows SSA to communicate with non-English-speakers.

Groceries to Go
Weekly grocery shopping and delivery, with no delivery fee, for eligible residents in the City of Alexandria. Clients
choose between Giant and Harris Teeter. As part of a pilot program administered by the US Department of Agriculture,
the program has expanded to serve clients on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). SSA was one of only five organizations nationwide chosen for the USDA pilot. The Virginia Commonwealth Council on
Aging honored the program with its 2017 “Best Practices” Award.

AniMeals
AniMeals continues to expand, providing food for pets of low-income seniors residing in the City of Alexandria. SSA
received a grant from Meals on Wheels America that provides funding for supplies including kitty litter, tick and
flea medicines, leashes, and other needed pet supplies. SSA is working with the Animal Welfare League to expand
the program, targeting senior communities around the city.

FRIENDLY VISITOR PROGRAM
Carefully screened and trained volunteers are individually matched with socially isolated seniors with whom they visit for at least an hour each week year-'round. Both volunteers and seniors are interviewed regarding their personal history
and interests, to facilitate a compatible match. The program continues to expand, providing volunteers with a “Tip of the Month” and quarterly meetings to share stories
and get ideas from local experts about ways to interact with their seniors.

EDUCATION AND OUTREACH
Senior Speaker Series
SSA presents monthly Speaker Series events, providing the most up-to-date information on different topics. The
programs are collaboratively created in partnership with City agencies and non-profits. Topics this year included:
Health & Fitness, Senior Technology, Housing, Caregiving, SCAMS and Identity Theft, and Livable Communities. SSA surveys participants to see what topics are of interest and
relevant to the senior community.

Senior Law Day
The Alexandria Bar Association and Senior Services of Alexandria co-present Senior Law Day each fall
to inform the Alexandria community about important legal and financial planning issues. This
year’s event on Determining your Destiny: Understanding the Need to Plan attracted the
largest audience since the program began.
Senior Information Corners
Volunteers stock senior information corners with current literature for seniors at 15 locations, including City
libraries, major recreation centers, and senior communities.
Senior Living in Alexandria
SSA produces a monthly cable TV show, Senior Living in Alexandria, now in its 4th year, which highlights and
expands on the information shared at the Speaker Series. The show is broadcast on Comcast cable channel 70 each
Sunday at 2 pm in Alexandria, and on channel 69 in Arlington. You can also watch it on our Web site and
YouTube.
SLA’s host Jim Roberts with Dr. Basim Khan, Neighborhood Health
Senior Academy
SSA and the Alexandria Office of Communications offer a free 4-week Senior Academy which provides Alexandria’s
seniors with an overview of the City’s government functions, information about programs and services for
seniors, and ways to get involved.

DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION (DOT) PARATRANSIT CALL CENTER
Under contract to the City of Alexandria, SSA has staffed the (DOT) Paratransit Program Call Center since 1984. Seven days a week, SSA coordinates
reduced-cost ADA-compliant (Americans with Disabilities Act) sedan and van transportation for over
1,600 City of Alexandria residents with physical or mental disabilities. SSA’s reservationists schedule
client rides, which are provided by Diamond Transportation Services, Inc. and White Top Cab
Company.

SILVER SERVICE SENIOR DISCOUNT CARD
The Silver Service Senior Discount card encourages Alexandria’s senior residents to patronize local
businesses and restaurants through a targeted discount program. Over 30 businesses in all parts of the city now participate in the Silver Service Card, and more
are added each month.
As part of SSA’s Strategic Plan, a task force began meeting in April to develop plans for a “Community Ambassador” Program.
The goal is to establish ongoing training for representatives in different communities, including
senior centers, faith organizations, Naturally Occurring Retirement Communities and immigrant groups to
share information about programs and services available
for Alexandria’s seniors. SSA was a recipient of a Rotary Club of Alexandria’s 2017 Community Grant to
help get the program up and running in the fall of 2017.
