Opening Keynote Speech
Ma Siu-cheung, Eric, JPUnder Secretary for Development, The Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region
Promoting the Use of BIM in Public Works and Construction IndustryBIM is a transformative technology that would bring revolutionary
changes to the construction industry and would significantly boost
our productivity. The Development Bureau (DEVB) of the HKSAR
Government and the Construction Industry Council (CIC) are actively
promoting the use of BIM in public works and the construction
industry to get Hong Kong ready for the BIM era.
The HKSAR Government has piloted the adoption of BIM in public
works projects as early as 2009. While more than 30 public works
projects have been earmarked for using BIM in various project stages,
DEVB is formulating the long term strategic plan for using BIM
in public works from planning, design, construction to operation
and maintenance. In particular, DEVB considers that BIM brings
considerable benefits in the management of Government assets and
have earmarked two pioneer projects in Electrical and Mechanical
Services Department and Water Supplies Department respectively for
exploring the use of BIM for asset management.
The CIC is also working with full steam to promote the use of BIM in
the construction industry. It has recently published the Final Report
of the Roadmap for BIM Strategic Implementation in Hong Kong’s
Construction Industry. It is also working to devise a set of standards and
specifications for the use of BIM in construction projects in Hong Kong.

Chris LockBIM Manager, Steensen Varming
Steensen Varming
Biography
Chris has worked in the industry for some 13
years as a Mechanical draftsperson and has a
strong interest in Building Information Modelling,
systems and data management. Chris has
been working towards his degree part time which he
hopes to complete next year and is the current
BIM manager at Steensen Varming.
Chris also has a strong interest in ESD and has
spent some time during his career in this field and as
part of his degree is writing his Thesis on ground source
heat rejection systems.
Chris’s current role reflects his experience over the past five years working in a similar capacity on
significant and iconic projects in a BIM capacity.
An Examination into BIM Feasibility: Working with Existing InfrastructureCan BIM bring advantages to fit outs? Are refurbishment projects in
historically listed buildings able to be efficiently designed in BIM? Can
BIM be used on small scale design work with boutique designers?
This presentation will examine a number of different techniques that
can be used to design, document, and deliver projects successfully in
BIM on existing Infrastructure based Projects.
Often we are confronted with small fees, limited scope and stake
holders that are BIM illiterate. Couple this with an aggressive
time frame and the perception can be that BIM is not the best
methodology to utilise. Over the past three years however we have
finessed our techniques and developed a framework that has been
able to provide positive outcomes and value add to every project by
utilising BIM. Using a number of workflows we have been able to
find a pattern of success which we will demonstrate by showcasing a
number of projects.
This presentation will examine the efficiencies that have been able to
be developed using analytical and process driven techniques that has
permeated throughout our company. From software based solutions
and customs scripts to more technically advanced techniques such as
Point Cloud Scanning we will demonstrate how we have leveraged
BIM in what we like to think of as intelligent, valuable and elegant
solutions.

Kelvin TamBIM Manager, Ronald Lu and Partners
Ronald Lu and Partners
Biography
Kelvin Tam, AIA, American registered architect, LEED AP, is the BIM Manager of
Ronald Lu and Partners. He has been working as both
a designer and BIM lead on a variety of building
types in the United States’ leading design firms as
RTKL, Rossetti Architects and NBBJ. Kelvin has been a speaker at international BIM
conferences like Autodesk University, Revit Technology
Conference North America, Revit Technology
Conference Australasia and the HKIBIM Hong Kong
BIM Conference.
Power Your Design with BIM: Designing with ParametricMost architects and engineers usually think that BIM is a coordination
and documentation tool.
This presentation will surely change their way of thinking about
BIM. In fact the parametric in BIM is a powerful tool for designers
to explore limitless possibilities in design. From curtain wall tool to
surface division, from linear dimension variables to angle rotation,
from regular geometries to complex organic forms, the use of
parametric modeling can help designers to see designs beyond that
achievable by 2D sketches and drawings.
With data driven modeling, designers can even study forms which
they can hardly predict and imagine. Through parametric modeling,
designers can understand the relationship between data/information
and forms as well as the construction technology of how things are
put together.
BIM is intelligent and parametric thinking is the way to design in
future.

Approaching BIM/FM Integration: Filling the Gaps for SuccessHong Kong’s AEC industry has shown promising development
and enthusiasm in practicing BIM over the past years, but we are
still attempting to define facility management in terms of BIM/FM
integration. Currently, great amount of building information are
inputted into the models during design and construction phases, and
it is only logical that we pursuit maximum utility of the data in the
form of facility management.
This presentation has one goal in mind: to seek out a new and better
solution to BIM/FM integration, and we will explore the How and
Why of BIM/FM integration. For this presentation, we reviewed a
pilot facility management project on a utility plant, and examined the
challenges and lessons our staff experienced during this study.
This project attempts to use the Construction Operations Building
Information Exchange data format (COBie) and Maximo to create a
facility management system based upon BIM models. The FM system
is intended to assist in implementing BIM on less commonly used
disciplines; whether it be financial, managerial or renovation.
This presentation does not provide a one-stop solution to BIM/FM
integration in Hong Kong, but it fills in a few missing pieces.

Exactal Limited
Biography
Ken Leung received a bachelor degree in
Construction Economics from the University of Technology, Sydney in
2003 and a master degree in Real Estate from the
University of Hong Kong in 2007. Before he joined his present company Exactal as a Product Specialist in 2010, he had worked as a Quantity Surveyor for
more than 10 years with experience in a full range of pre and post-contract
Quantity Surveying Services for Quantity Surveying
Firms and International Main Contractor.
Innovative BIM Solution For Project Management And Quantity SurveyingCurrently, Building Information Modelling (BIM) in construction is
primarily used for 3D modelling but the database is often minimally
populated. Therefore, improvement of the configuration of data for
3D BIM file to facilitate better communication is necessary.
An innovative BIM approach can give a speedy and real time response
to design options, allowing the design to flow to an affordable cost,
and provides more comprehensive and reliable cost data upon which
latest development can be based.
To benefit from the latest BIM technology, all key members in
the project team must enhance themselves to meet new level of
challenges. Both the Project Manager and the Quantity Surveyor must
have a proven knowledge of the BIM software and an innovative
approach for re-engineering data into a more effective manner to
produce accurate quantities and better management reports.
The purpose of this study is to examine the methodology from the
BIM models to be adopted by PM or QS to measure and evaluate their
projects. In addition, it also evaluates the level of information required
for BIM models to support the local submission or measurement
rules. Finally, it recommends innovative solutions in the current
workflow to facilitate BIM measurement and management.

A New World of BIMBIM in HK has been developing and using for almost a decade.
Although we can feel the momentum of BIM movement, BIM
application in projects is, in general, scattered with limited objectives
taken. Holistic approach of BIM to achieve the greatest value may not
have happened. Many people know something about what BIM is but
only limited people know how to make it work to achieve the greatest
value. It is understandable that the challenge may not link with the
technology itself. It may be due to the industry practice or even the
contractual and organizational setup.
The application of BIM in New World Development starting from New
World Construction is aiming at an extensive use of BIM to redefine
the work practice such at all information can be well collected,
organised and used. The redefined workflow enables our staff and all
stakeholders of the development to participate in the process. Their
value can be realized by the consistency, efficiency and accuracy of the
information. This is the New World of BIM.

Bridging the Gap between Design, Construction, and FM with BIMComplex building projects require sophisticated processes and tools
to ensure that access to real-time project information is maintained.
A collaborative effort between several general contractors and a
software company has led to the development of a mobile system,
BIManywhere, which simplifies access to coordinated model
information and project documentation by field personnel.
Challenges to existing BIM utilization are discussed, and how the
BIManywhere system addresses common user requirements that
answer these challenges. This is achieved through a comparatively
low-cost and accessible system with an intuitive interface that utilizes
a 2D to 3D navigational map, an innovative instant navigation system
via QR codes, and a location-based feature which overlays project
information onto the real world.
