PROTOTYPE SPECIFIC INFORMATIONContinuinguponthesuccessfulSD60-series,in1992EMDdebutedthenextstepinlocomotiveevolutionwiththeSD70-series.WhileoutwardlysimilaratfirstglancetotheSD60M,theD.C.-driveSD70Mfeaturedseveralexternaldesignrefinementsfromthepredecessormodel.Batteryboxeswererelocatedtotheleft-handsidewalkwayimmediatelybehindthecab,alarge,boxyforwardtractionmotorblowerhousingreplacedtheangularversionusedonSD60s,theraisedwalkwayductonthelefthandwalkwaywaseliminated,andanintakeforthereartractionmotorbloweronthelefthandsideofthecarbody,directlyundertherearradiatorintakegrill,wasadded.

Internally,theSD70boastedimprovementsaswell;a16-710GBprimemover,ratedat4,000hp,wascoupledtoanewalternatordesign,theAR20.NewD70TRtractionmotorswerestandard,andcontrollingallofthispowerandlocomotivefunctionwasEMD’snewEM2000microprocessor,whichboastedmorememory,twicetheprocessingspeed,andimprovedlocomotiveself-diagnosticcapabilitiescomparedtotheprocessorsuiteusedintheSD60.EvenmorerevolutionarywastheinclusionofEMD’spatented“Radial”truckdesign,theHTC-R.Thisdesign,whichmadeitsdebutunderEMDDemoSD60#3,replacedthevenerableHT-Ctruck,andisuniqueinitsabilitytoshift,or“steer”,thewheelsetslaterallythroughcurves,resultingingreatlyreducedwheelsetandtrackwear,andcoupledwiththenewD70TRtractionmotorsandEM2000microprocessor,greatlyimprovedadhesion.

Continuingwithpreviouspractice,EMDbuiltasetofDemonstratorSD70Ms,EMD7000-7002,allequippedwiththeNorthAmericansafety-cab(hencethe“M”intheirmodeldesignation),anddeckedoutinanattractivegray,silver,andburgundypaintscheme.TheseunitstravelledalloverNorthAmerica,showingoffthelatesttechnologyfromEMD.SouthernPacific,UnionPacificandeventuallyNorfolkSouthernwouldsignupfortheSD70Mmodels.AlthoughNSstartedoutwiththe“Spartan”cabSD70,theyeventuallyreturnedfortheSD70Mmodel.By2004theSD70Mbegantobedeliveredwiththefamiliar“flared”radiatorgrilles.BothNSandUPhaveexamplesoftheselocomotivesontheirroster,andyoucanstillfindmostoftheentirefleetofSD70Msinregularservicetoday.
