The Unit Plan we decided on was a Social Studies topic for first grade mainly relating to
holidays that the children have encountered before and will be experiencing in the future.
However, each of these holidays either related to the background history of it to relate it to amore condensed Social Studies topic or to another core curriculum subject. The students needed
a wide variety of skills before participating in these lessons, but none that were above their grade
level. For the first lesson we did, A Direct Instruction lesson plan, we choose to cover thehistory of Thanksgiving, in a broad overview. The students only needed to have a little
background information about this holiday since the main goal of the lesson was to share more
facts with them through a story. They also needed to be able to use full sentences andunderstand how to use a KWL chart with help from the teacher. The students drew a picture and
completed a sentence about a logical place a turkey could hide after reading a book. This helped
in keeping the lesson informative, but engaging as well. The main standard for this lesson came
from the Iowa Common Core, Social Studies area. It was; History: Understand that individualsand groups within a society may promote change or the status quo. Understand the roles historic
and ordinary Americans have played in changing society and government. Understand that
changes in society may or may not be beneficial. We could have also included a LiteracyStandard for first grade that states, Use illustrations and details in a story to describe its
characters, setting, or events.
The second lesson plan we did was Presentation with Advanced Organizer lesson plan
based on Labor Day. This is a holiday that some students do not necessarily know a lot about atthis age level. We wanted to give them the main idea of this holiday since it is a lot about
appreciating and giving time off to people who are working hard all the time. For this lesson the
students needed to understand what a job was, have the ability to draw and create a picture aswell as one full sentence describing that picture and then communicate their ideas to the class
through discussion. The students will be listening to a story about jobs, interviewing their parents
with simple questions, and then creating a picture and sentence of what they wanted to do when
they grow up to connect it to Labor Day. For this lesson, we chose to use Iowa Common CoreStandards again in the Social Studies area in which stated: Understand the need for public and
private goods and services and the workers who provide them. Understand natural resources are
from nature; capital resources are made by humans; humans resources (labor) are the efforts ofpeople who produce goods services. This lesson could have been related to the previous
Literacy Standard above as well.
The Cooperative Learning lesson plan was all about Columbus Day. There are a lot ofstudents who know who Columbus is but not exactly sure what he did. In order to provide our
students with more knowledge, we chose to do this lesson. The students needed to have crafting
skills such as cutting out and gluing materials, but also needed skills to write descriptive words
or sentences with help if needed. This lesson was a little different in the fact that they alsoneeded to work in their groups quietly and show group cooperation throughout the entire work
time. The students worked together in groups on this lesson to create a fact list of Columbus
Day facts on a cut out paper Earth after viewing a Brain Pop Jr. video. This activity allowed the
students to learn more about Columbus Day while working with others and doing an art craft aswell! The standard we used for this also came from the Iowa Core like our previous lessons.
They were Social Studies based and stated: Understand that people in different times and places
view the world differently. Understand that science and technology can affect physicalenvironments. Understand why people developed a region.

The fourth lesson was a Concept Attainment lesson plan relating to winter holidays! It
was more about a language arts based standard than a social studies one. For this lesson we used
a standard from the Iowa Core in the 1stgrade Reading section that stated, Print Concepts:
Demonstrate understanding of the organization and basic features of print. Recognize the
distinguishing features of a sentence (e.g., first word, capitalization, ending punctuation.) The
students were to write two complete and correct sentences including punctuation andcapitalization that related to the holidays on their snowman creations after discussing the criticalattributes as a class. In order to complete these lesson, the students needed background
knowledge on complete sentences, types of sentences, writing skills, holiday topics and
cooperation with others. This lesson allowed students to create sentences about their favoriteholiday experiences while practicing good grammar and enjoying an art craft as well.
The final lesson we created for this unit plan was the Problem Based/Inquiry lesson plan
related to Earth Day. The students were put into groups and asked to create a machine of any
kind that would help the environment or the community in any way they wanted. Reading abook and discussing ideas how we can help the environment before the students break into their
groups would be important. They would need to be able to work with others as well as use their
creative and critical thinking skills to complete this lesson plan. They would have to be able tobe responsible with glue, markers, and scissors in creating their machines. The standard that we
chose to relate this lesson to was another Social Studies one stating: Understand the
development of technological innovations and their economic effects. This was a fun lesson
that required the students to dig a little deeper and come up with a way that they could make adifference in the community or environment.
The way we created these lessons would not be in the order we would use them in of
course. We would use the topic of each lesson around the time in which that holiday or eventwas occurring. However, we think we covered a wide variety of important topics that students
need to be aware of. My connecting the topics to other core content or making the activity
engaging and meaningful, the students are going to gain more from the lesson. There are many
other holidays we could add in to this unit plan to keep our theme going and teach the students abroad understanding of all the different holidays they are going to be encountering all through
their lives and why they are important.
Unit Goals And Description:
Unit Goals:
Have students be able to write in complete sentences

Have students learn about their parent or an adults career through asking questions
Have students dream of a future career
Students will use their creativity
Students will understand the concept of Earth Day
Students will learn about Christopher Columbus
Students will learn about the Holiday Columbus day
Unit Objectives:
Students in the 1stgrade classroom will write two complete, correct sentences, including
capitalization and punctuation at the end, relating to the holidays on their snowmancreations after discussing the critical attributes as a class and coming up with their own
sentences in groups.
Students in the first grade classroom will create the story as a class The Turkey Hidby writing complete sentences and drawing a picture about realistic places a turkey couldhide after reading the story, If You Were At The First Thanksgiving. Students in the
first grade classroom will understand the importance of Labor Day through an interviewwith their parents and by creating a crystal ball drawing of their future career with one
sentence describing that job
After viewing and discussing the Columbus Day video on Brain Pop Jr. website, thestudents in the 1
stgrade classroom will work together in a group to create a big cut out
picture of the Earth and include at least six Columbus Day facts they have learned with
only 2-3 spelling errors
Students in the 1stgrade will work with groups to come up with an idea and creation of a
machine, as well as a 2-3 sentence description, on a piece of paper, using cut out paper
and markers, that will help the environment or community after discussing as a class
possible ways we can make a difference for Earth Day.
Unit Description: The purpose of this unit is to teach first grade students the history and meaningof Federal Holidays celebrated in the United States.
Unit Goals and Description of Unit
The overall goal of this unit plan was to give students a better understanding of a wide
variety of holidays. They can be told about the history of a holiday over and over again, but itwont mean anything to them until they are able to do a meaningful and engaging activity
relating to it. However, since we had first grade, we did not go into extreme detail with any of
the holidays. Also, some of the holidays we used were also related to other core content

materials, but we still provided the lessons with relevant information about the given holiday.
The main idea of this unit plan was to provide students, who are at a younger age, more
knowledge on holidays they may have heard of but dont understand or more knowledge on aholiday they have been around a lot in their lives. Its important that children understand why
we celebrate certain days of the year. We will share each of our objectives from each of the
lessons and explain how they were met.The first objective from the Direction Instruction lesson plan was, Students in the firstgrade classroom will create the story as a class The Turkey Hid by writing complete
sentences and drawing a picture about realistic places a turkey could hide after reading the story,
If You Were At The First Thanksgiving. This goal was met because the students were given achance to write a complete sentence about a hiding spot a turkey could hide and draw a picture
that explained their sentence. The students would have had realistic ideas about hiding places for
a turkey after reading the read aloud book mentioned in the objective. This objective was also
met in the unit goals because we gave children background information about the holiday ofThanksgiving and then they were able to apply it to an activity to broaden their understanding.
The next objective for our Presentation with Advanced Organizer lesson plan stated,
After reading the story, What Do People Do All Day? and interviewing their parents at home, students in the first grade will be able to create a picture of their dream job followed by one
complete sentence with only 1-2 errors. The students were able to meet this objective by
having us read the book aloud to them and then getting the chance to interview their parents
about their jobs to gain a better understanding of what a job actually is. Once the studentsbrought back that interview information and shared it with the class, they each were required to
come up with their dream job picture and complete sentence describing it. This lesson met the
unit goals because Labor Day tends to be a holiday that children have heard of, but dontunderstand its purpose. This lesson gives them a view on exactly why so many people do not
work on that day (holiday) and why it is so important.
The third objective for our Cooperative Learning lesson plan was, After viewing and
discussing the Columbus Day video on Brain Pop Jr. website, the students in the 1stgrade
classroom will work together in a group to create a big cut out picture of the Earth and include at
least six Columbus Day facts they have learned with only 2-3 spelling errors. Then the social
goal was, Students in the 1stgrade classroom will get into their groups quickly and quietly and
remain in these groups until the given task is done while talking in their quiet and inside
classroom voices. Both of these goals were met extremely well with the clear and explicit
directions stated in the lesson plan. The students watch the video and then proceed to get intotheir pre-assigned groups quickly and efficiently with explicit directions from the teacher. They
then work together to come up with six facts they learned in the previous video to create their
Earth cut outs. Columbus Day was another holiday that a lot of students might not have a lot of
background information on which is why our lesson plan connected to our unit goal. It helpedchildren understand and gain knowledge on Columbus Day while collaborating with others and
learning acceptable social behaviors.
The fourth objective for the Concept Attainment lesson plan stated, Students in the 1st
grade classroom will write two complete, correct sentences, including capitalization andpunctuation at the end, relating to the holidays on their snowman creations after discussing
critical attributes as a class. The students were able to meet this lesson because they worked
together as a class to discover what makes a complete sentence and what does not using thecritical attributes section of the lesson. They were then able to show their knowledge of

also always provided class discussion with the students to get their opinions about the topic and
share important information with them too. In order to incorporate everything the students
learned into one big final assessment, it needed to be straight forward. However, it also neededto be an activity that would allow the students to express their individual thoughts and
knowledge on the topic. This is why we chose to have the students write one sentence on three
of the holidays we discussed in these lessons. The question is open-ended and there arecountless things the students could write on this paper. Also, we have been practicing writingand completing sentences in every lesson we did, so the students should be very familiar with
this and be able to complete the task. If all the students seemed to be struggling to come up with
ideas, we could incorporate a group discussion to get their ideas and brains flowing. We will notgive them specific sentences they would use, but we hope that they will be able to come up with
their own ideas since we have been discussing holidays for this entire unit. Of course, we could
have revisions to this assignment for higher or lower leveled students. If the student was
struggling with writing sentences at this point in the year, we could either assist them or theycould attempt to write a sentence and also draw a picture to accompany it to help get their ideas
across to us. If the student was on a higher level, they could pick a different holiday (not listed
on the assessment) to write about or write more than one sentence if their thoughts consisted ofmore than a sentence. We want the students in our classroom to succeed and we hope that this
assessment will help to wrap up this entire unit and allow the students to have gained knowledge
on the holidays!
Have students write a sentence about what they learned about each holiday.

Resources for teachers were trickier then for students. As teachers we have to be able to find
accurate and valuable resources not only for ourselves but for our students and the lesson weprovide. All of the websites we used were great for preparing and proving ideas for lessons on
the holidays our unit covers. Scholastic is a great resource for teachers and students. They
provide teacher friendly lessons, texts, and ideas. For students they provide kid friendly
information. Tolerance.org was a great recourse for teachers because it discusses the appropriatebalance of teaching holidays in the classroom and areas to avoid. I also put other teachers at the
top of our list because mentor teachers are a huge assistance with gathering ideas and inspirationfor newer teachers. Beg, borrow, and steal! Overall the information we gathered was very useful
and can easily be implemented into our classroom one day.

There are both a ton of online and offline resources for students to dig into! Although it may
seem like online is the easiest route of success there is a plethora of texts out there for students todive into! I tried to incorporate many additional texts on the Holidays students will learn about
in this unit lesson. I think having mentor or extension texts accessible to students in the
classroom is a crucial way to spark their interest and understanding. There are so many awesome
texts for students and teachers to use on each individual holiday. The websites I used are kidfriendly and educational. We picked websites that were great for extension activities or for doing
their own research, which is great for differentiation. The websites were so fun that we stayed oneach paged and enjoyed them for ourselves.

We wanted to create a Bulletin Board that would be on showcase for the entire school year. We
created a board with all of the months in a year and we highlighted the holidays that we have or
will learn about in our unit of holidays. This Bulletin Board is a great reference tool for studentsto use. It also serves as a creative word wall when working with spelling months, holidays, and
days of the week. The Bulletin Board is attractive in appearance and grabs students attention.
On the bottom of our calendar we put a small goal for our class: As a class we will learn aboutthe history, meaning, and importance of holidays! this is just a motivational reminder of ourpurpose for the overall unit and each lesson within it. Also at the bottom of our bulletin board we
created a clear and easy to read table that works as a great visual for the dates of each holiday. In
addition to make our bulletin board more meaningful to students we decided that we would puteach students name on the month of their birthday with a cute label. This makes them feel apart
of the bulletin boar and involved!
