Anderson University will host a reception during homecoming weekend to celebrate

the recent publication of “The Desk as Altar: The Centennial History of Anderson University,” writ-ten by Professor Emeritus Merle D. Strege. The reception, which will be held in York Performance Hall on Saturday October 8 at 4 p.m., will feature a reading from Professor Deborah Miller Fox and a book signing by Strege.

The book chronicles the relationship between the Church of God (Anderson) and Anderson University over the first century of the university’s life. The centennial history highlights the leaders of AU throughout its history, many of whom have lit the path for current students and faculty.

Lighting the Path

From the president

This fall, Anderson University will celebrate

Homecoming (October 7-8) with the centennial

theme, “Lighting the Path.” The weekend will signal the

start of the university’s centennial celebration. The cen-

tennial theme is woven into the fabric of AU,

carrying forward the 50th anniversary theme

of “Toward the Light” and the 75th anni-

versary theme of “Kindle the Flame.”

The word “path” visually represents

the twists and curves of the journey

of spiritual and educational growth

students find on the AU campus.

The centennial celebration will

involve many special events. Starting

Oct. 2016 and continuing through Oct.

2017, chapel will include a centennial

speaker series of eight alumni from different

generations and different vocations. Also, a special

Truth, Faith, and Service Series will be presented featuring

Randy Lewis, businessman, disability employment advocate,

I know many of you look forward

to the Homecoming celebration

each year. Even if you’re not able

to attend, it’s fun to catch up with

people through social media and

the recap in Signatures. This year,

Homecoming is especially exciting as

we will be kicking off our centennial

celebration. Anderson Bible Training

School opened in 1917, and

Anderson University is celebrating its first century of service.

Our theme for the centennial is “Lighting the Path.”

This is our campus theme for chapel/convocation and is

woven into many of our activities this year. It also raises a key

question for all of us: Who and what lights your path? Some

of you may be thinking of a professor, supervisor at a campus

and author; Lauren Winner, historian, author, and assistant

professor of Christian Spirituality at Duke Divinity School;

and Scott Russell Sanders, American novelist, essayist and

former distinguished professor of English at Indiana

University. Lastly, the Anderson Symphony

Orchestra, conducted by Richard Sowers,

will perform a Centennial Celebration

Concert in the spring. Details about

these centennial events and more can

be found at anderson.edu/100.

Anderson University holds a spe-

cial place in the hearts of more than

26,000 alumni nationwide. It is here

where many alumni discovered a voca-

tional calling. And it is here where the

path of many generations of students were

lit with the lamps of truth, faith, and service.

During the special days of Homecoming, we high-

light the traditions and the heritage of AU. Join us as we

celebrate the past and look toward the future.

job, or classmate who shaped your time at AU — and your

life. Homecoming is about reconnecting with those people

who have been lights for us and reminiscing about the people

and events that have been a part of AU’s rich history.

I hope to see you at Homecoming, but I hope you’ll also

keep up with us through the web and social media. This year,

we’ll be using #LightingthePath to tag centennial events. We

also have a special Lighting the Path section of the website,

which you can visit at anderson.edu/100. Throughout the

year, we’ll share 100-second Stories, Throwback Thursdays,

and Fun Facts about AU. We’ll hear from nationally known

speakers and learn from AU alumni. We’ll reflect on AU’s

history, and we’ll look ahead to our second century of service.

And, it all starts at Homecoming 2016. See you there!
