15. What makes the conversion so much easier is the
way in which the stock VW bell-housing unbolts from the
transmission casing. Don’t forget to drain the gear oil first!
17. You’ll need to remove the oil seal and oil-control
scroll from the old bell-housing – the scroll needs to be
refitted to the new adaptor, along with a new seal
18. The oil-control scroll is fitted to the RJES bell-housing
using the adaptor supplied. Richard Jones appears to have
thought of everything, and the kit really does make this
conversion a DIY possibility
16. Clean up the mating surface of the gearbox using a
razor blade and some thinners. Also, wrap the splines
of the input shaft with tape to protect them
19. As you might have expected by now, the kit comes
complete with all the necessary fittings to mount the new
bell-housing on the Volkswagen gearbox casing
20. As the Subaru clutch release bearing is bulkier than
the VW one, it’s necessary to clearance the original cross-
shaft. We also fully welded the release arms for strength
21. This is the RJES bell-housing in place – note that
the cross-shaft has now been installed, along with the
original hydraulic clutch slave cylinder and its bracket
22. Take a moment to identify the wiring in the
junction box in the engine bay. The RJES (or your own
converted) Subaru loom should match up perfectly.
Next month we’ll cover the engine installation itself…
As the conversion relies on the
Subaru clutch pressure plate,
you’ll need to source the
Subaru release bearing, too.
This can be fitted to the VW
clutch cross-shaft using the
RJES conversion as shown
This is the complete Subaru
clutch release bearing, ready to
install on the VW cross-shaft
