Korea’s Entrance into Halal Market:Limitation
• Exported items are limited to a few items such as cooking oil, noodle, etc.- need to be expanded to other processed food products, including Korean traditional food products
Olive oil Roasted seaweed(laver) Kimchi Cooked rice Instant noodle
Challenges
• Investments in R&D - Develop ‘alcohol reduction techniques’ in Korean traditional fermented foods(sauces and pastes)
• Investments in plants- Dedicated lines and equipments etc.
• Limited cross-certification between KMF and other certificate bodies overseas- Cross-certification only with Malaysia’s JAKIM
• Consumer education and communication- halal as safe and clean foods- Non-Muslims are increasingly interested in halal food products
