I Do Solemnly Swear

By D.M. Annechino

Excerpt

“The President is…dead.”

Kate recognized the voice on the phone; she spoke to the Chief of Staff regularly.

She could even see Charles McDermott’s squinty eyes and that nervous twitch. But his

shocking announcement didn’t immediately register. It was almost as if he were speaking

a foreign language.

Gripping her stomach, she shuffled across the room and glanced out the third story

window, the cordless phone pressed to her ear. Except for the faint whine of a distant

siren, the streets were still. There was a heavy fog in the air, and the halogen streetlights

looked out of focus, like pale-yellow balls of cotton. Kate’s legs were trembling, and her

stomach—always subject to an unwelcome assault—felt as if it were ablaze. Her voice,

barely a whisper, broke the early morning quiet. “What happened, Charles?”

D.M. Annechino wrote his first book, How to Buy the Most Car for the Least Money, in 1992, while working as a general manager in the automotive business. But his true passion has always been fiction, especially thrillers. He indulged his taste for suspense during his former career as a book editor specializing in full-length fiction. He spent two years researching serial killers before

finally penning his gripping and memorable debut novel, They Never Die Quietly. He went on to publish Resuscitation, a follow-up thriller. His third novel, I Do Solemnly Swear, is a political thriller. A native of New York, he lives today in San Diego with his wife, Jennifer. When not writing, he enjoys cooking, drinking vintage wines, and spending time on the warm beaches of Southern California. Learn more by visiting http://DMANNECHINO.WORDPRESS.COM/
