ICISTS-KAIST 2009 WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION
ICISTS-KAIST offers Parallel Sessions and Interactive Session, Team Project, which gives the
opportunity to participate within.
Workshop I. Climate Change :
Merging Technology and Policy for Green Solutions
Ranging from day-to-day or year-to-year to
decades or millions of years, the time scales by which
variations in climate are observed prove that it is
indispensable part of everyday human activities as well
as one of the essential components in interpreting the
human history. These variations in climate could refer
not only to the minor weather changes and passages of
seasons, but also to the ice ages in the past. While the
former directly affect individuals’ lifestyle, the latter is more relevant to alteration of the Earth’s
environment as a whole. In either case, it is unquestionable that climate change has always been
a principal element in the progression of humanity.
Undoubtedly, climate change is still a matter of great consequence today, perhaps in a more
urgent way than in the past. In recent, the term ‘climate change’ has come to signify primarily the
variations in climate that are caused by humans inadvertently. The rise in average surface
temperature known as global warming is the main concern, but complex arguments surrounding
its causes and mixed predictions for the future prove it is tangled with many other environmental
problems, which, in turn, are connected to social and economic matters. In other words, climate
change perceived today is a common threat to the global community, to which appropriate
solutions should be sought immediately.
To work out this environmental crisis, it is important to combine efforts in scientific, social, and
economic fields and be able to interpret climate change and its possible effects from various
perspectives. In this context, this workshop is intended to identify diverse scientific aspects of
climate change, discuss on the reliability of climate modeling method, and to distinguish
industrial and political endeavors to resolve the associated crisis.

Parallel Session #1 . Climate Change Overview: Human and Natural Drivers
Climate change itself is definitely not a new concept. From dinosaurs that are said to
have become extinct after the ice age to people who wear different clothes from time to time
according to changing temperatures, climate change has been a part of natural history known
and accepted well by people for long. Nevertheless, global warming, rather an abnormal climate
change that has been observed in recent, has aroused doubts as to how the Earth would respond
to it.
Whether the “warming” is actually happening or whether human activities truly have
more to do with this than the natural world are still in debate. As a result, it is necessary to
discuss from the beginning when and why climate change has become a problem, why the issue
is significant, what aspects of it show that it is human-induced and what deny that.
Parallel Session #2 . Ocean and Climate Change Technology
Ocean is closely related to climate change around
the Earth; in some part, it could be held responsible for
climate change occurred in history. Even small shifts in ocean
current patterns could affect world climate immensely. Such
change in the circulation of ocean does depend on the
climate variations of the Earth, showing the interrelated
nature of ocean and climate. Thus, it is reasonable to talk
about climate change in the context of ocean. As oceanic
technologies to hamper rapid climate change are also being researched, ocean’s potential to
bringing about a better understanding of climate change and acquiring a new way of managing
climate change is indeed huge.
Parallel Session #3. Greenhouse Gases and Aerosols
Atmosphere conditions also play an important part in climate change. As greenhouse gases and
aerosols are emitted from human activities, their concentration in the atmosphere is variable
through time, involving factors such as global population, living standards, energy use and
technology. Accordingly, it would be meaningful to discuss on how changes in the amount of
greenhouse gases and aerosols in the atmosphere would affect climate. Practical ways to both
directly and indirectly diminish negative aspects of them should also be sought.

Parallel Session #4. Climate Modeling and Prediction
Climate modeling methods are essential in interpreting past climate changes and making
future predictions regarding climate change. Almost all statements on climate change are in fact
based upon the various climate models of atmosphere and ocean. Nevertheless, mechanisms
behind producing those models are not commonly known, and the degree of reliability of them is
also unsure. Because enhanced models based on the past and present data would ultimately
yield more realistic predictions for the future and lead to a better understanding of climate
change history, it is vital to learn about climate modeling systems used today and factors that
may lead to improved modeling systems.
Parallel Session #5 . Green Energy: Road to Low Carbon Emissions
One of the prospective research areas in response to work out the climate change crisis is the
so-called ‘green energy,’ the environmentally friendly source of energy. As carbon emissions are
mainly brought out by burning of fossil fuels, researchers here and there have been striving to
come up with an efficient alternative to fossil fuels. Although the extent to which carbon
emissions contribute to climate change crisis is not absolutely clear, it is rather an unquestionable
idea that they do serve as a critical factor in slowing down the readily observed rapid climate
change.
Parallel Session #6. Green Economy: Action in the Industries to Remedy Climate Change
In an attempt to resolve climate change crisis, industries have taken a step forward to
develop various ways to preserve the environment. Even some industries not directly related to
such business have newly begun similar eco-friendly practices. In order to promote more
companies to become non-polluting and eco-friendly, it is important to distinguish many possible
climate friendly technologies that could be promoted throughout the society in the future. In this
session, environmentally friendly techniques newly developed in some prominent companies are
to be introduced.
Parallel Session #7. Climate Policy: International Negotiations and Climate Friendly Lifestyles
In addition to technological and industrial efforts, global awareness of climate change
crisis is crucial to overcoming the situation. Until now, different countries have cooperated to
remedy the crisis through various ways. The Kyoto Protocol is an example of an international
agreement to deal with global warming and climate change, while the organizations such as the
THE OFFICIAL BROCHURE OF ICISTS-KAIST 2009

Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has promoted active interchange of technical ideas
on climate change. Nonetheless, not only are the international negotiations important, but
bringing about changes in people’s lifestyles to make their daily lives climate-friendly is also
needed. In this session, various climate policies to bring about international negotiations and to
spread climate friendly lifestyles among people would be discussed, along with their
effectiveness.

Workshop II. Human-Computer Interaction :
Designing Computer System for Intuitive Human Access
Recently, as the capability of the computer is
improving, the usage of the computer is centered on
exchanging information between computer and human.
Need of HCI (Human-Computer interaction), consequently,
became important as to make a computer more useful and
efficient.
HCI is the study of design, evaluation, and embodiment of interaction between
computer system and user. Interaction, in this sense, means the operation revealed from user
interface between user and computer. The purpose of HCI is to maximize the potential of
computer as a tool, to make the will of human beings freer, to improve creativity, and to increase
the communication and cooperation between humans.
This workshop’s purpose is as following. First, look at the present state of HCI through
various researching field and products from company. Second, anticipate the future of HCI and
inform the participants of the importance of HCI.
Parallel Session #1. The principles of HCI : key concepts and theories
HCI is composed of three main factors; a variety of computer systems, the system's
users, and the interaction between those user and the system. Each of these includes the
recognition and information processing of the human, the computer system structure and
information input / output process, the interaction between user and system evaluation, and the
development process. The results of structured research in these fields construct the principles
and the methodology of HCI and used in actual application. This session introduces these key
concepts and principles of HCI for evaluating and designing interfaces, with their brief examples.
Parallel Session #2. How are products designed by the HCI methodologies?
If you are a product developer and you must make a valuable product, what factors
would you think about? It is complex and difficult work, and you should think about which factor
is important and which is not. Comparing with other products, serious game system has high
quality of function, convenience, interest and efficiency. For example, aircraft simulation game
has various factors of HCI such as controller. Controller is adaptable, functional and educational

to learn how to manipulate aircraft. Through observing these kinds of concrete examples, let’s
examine how the important concepts of HCI are applied in the development of a real system.
Parallel Session #3. How are digital contents designed by the HCI methodologies?
In the field of creating digital
contents such as blogs, web pages and
various online services, HCI holds the key to
the success of those contents because the
most important point of digital content is
whether it can provide the user with
convenient user environment. Especially,
some basic HCI concepts like usability and availability are essential and actually used in web
development. Then, what are the considerations for designing digital contents and how these
contents are designed and evaluated through these considerations?
Parallel Session #4. User Centered Design : innovative thinking? Or just the solution to the
problem?
Design is certainly a significant factor in the production, yet its definition is becoming
vague these days. User-centered design is making the users incapable of adapting and
developing by strictly adhering to the needs of users. So, what is the real function of design? Is it
really making a product creative or is it limiting the product’s possibility in the future by
establishing its role as simply a problem solver? In this session, we will look at the present-
oriented designs and talk about the problems of changing role of designers.
Session #5. SEMVAST : Scientific Evaluation Methods for Visual Analytics Science and
Technology
Visual analytics is the science of analytical reasoning facilitated by interactive visual
interfaces. As new visual analytics methods and tools are developed, an evaluation infrastructure
is needed. It is especially difficult to assess effectiveness of new visual analytics methods and
tools as they combine multiple low level components (for example, analytical reasoning, visual
representations, data representations and algorithms) integrated in complex interactive systems
that require empirical user testing. Furthermore, it is difficult to assess the effectiveness without
THE OFFICIAL BROCHURE OF ICISTS-KAIST 2009
11
realistic data and tasks. This session will focus on the outlook of interface evaluation and visual
analytics, especially SEMVAST.
Parallel Session #6 . Social computing : HCI for the intermediation among people
Although the web is used by millions of people, chatting through the Internet or reading
a web page is practically an individual activity. But, as the performance of computer enhances
and the usage of the Internet propagates, the
computer has become new means of communication
among persons. People with the same interests and
opinions create web communities and web users
express themselves through blogs and websites. How
will these new communities on the web change and
how will these changes affect the future society?

Workshop III. Nano Clinic:
Breakthrough in Conquering Diseases
Nanotechnology is one of the leading techniques that will fundamentally change our
lives in the 21st century. As it explores one billionth of a meter – “nano world” – it enables us to
enter, control and utilize the world of atom or molecule. Fusing with biotechnology,
nanotechnology will radically enhance the medical field.
Nano-bio technology will resolve the limitations in present medical techniques, and
make innovative progress in diagnosis and treatment. Recently, scientists are focusing on
research about natural and synthetic nano-scale biomaterials. Through these nanomaterials,
nanobiochip can be manufactured to sense inner parts of organism, providing more accurate
information. Using this technique, subminature robots are also being devised to move
autonomously in the blood vessels. In addition, medical substances, about 50 nano meter less
than blood vessels, can be delivered to the designed destinations to treat the ailment.
Organisms can be viewed as an orchestra of a large number of molecules that
harmonizes with each other. Due to the nano-scale size of these molecules, we are able to
approach and deal with our bodies effectively through nano-biotechnology. With the viewpoint
mentioned above, this workshop is aimed at clarifying the concept of nanobiotechnology,
exploring the ongoing researches in diagnosis and treatment, and discussing potential
nanotoxicity in human life.
Parallel session #1. Introduction : Nano Biomaterials for 21st Century
What are you most afraid of? Most will agree that
one of the most fearful objects is the one that you can not
control but can merely see. Disease, therefore, is one of the
most deadly matters because you cannot physically enter the
minuscule cell world to treat the illness yourself. The current
nano-biotechnology fulfils this impossible dream. We will especially focus on nano-biomaterials
for medicine delivery and tissue regeneration. Firstly, a speaker will inform you about
sophisticated biomaterial system that delivers various protein drug or anti-cancer drug to
different parts of the body. He will then present us with continuous efforts to create medical

13
devices that will replace or enhance tissue functions that have been impaired by diseases or
injuries.
Parallel Session #2. Simple Diagnostic Skill : Nano-Biosensors
Imagine a simple diagnostic kit that will enable you to take
only few minutes of your time to check your health conveniently. A
biosensor is a device that makes this simple diagnosis possible. You will
learn about current nano-biosensor technology and its future through
this session. You will, furthermore, have an opportunity to imagine the
future lifestyle that is revolutionized by the developments of these
diagnostic kits.
Parallel Session #3 . Exploring Our Inner Body : Nano-molecular imaging
If there is an abnormality in our body, we have to identify it before we start the
treatment. Nano molecular imaging is a technology that detects and visualizes molecular level of
biological processes in organisms by utilizing nano particles. By measuring variable metabolism in
cell, expressed protein and genetic materials, we can get detailed information about the disease,
enabling quick diagnosis and treatment. In order to acquire this valuable information, PET and
MRI are available to check body tissues easily with nano particle, and other optical molecular
imaging technique is rapidly advancing. In this session, the speaker will provide you with
mechanisms behind this imaging technique and its characteristics.
Parallel Session #4. Maximizing the Effects of Medication : Nano Drug Delivery System
When one is sick, one normally takes pills to recover from
the ailment. What if, however, they have no curative effects or
cause detrimental side effects? Usually, drugs like anti-cancer
medicines are so toxic that they cause fatal side effect. Other
available alternative drugs, however, are less effective than these
toxic medicines. Then, how can we deal with this limitation of
present drug? Nano drug delivery system might broaden this
restriction by enabling the medicines to target specific parts of
THE OFFICIAL BROCHURE OF ICISTS-KAIST 2009
14
the body. Most scientists will agree that nano particles will maximize the beneficial effects of the
medicine and minimize its side effect. This session will give us a chance to explore this miracle of
nano drug.
Parallel Session #5 . Another Aspect of Nanobio-Medical Technology : Nano-Toxicity
Nanotechnology is applied in various field of science as it
establishes itself as a new paradigm to change our civilization. In
recent few years, however, several risks factors that can cause fatal
problems to our environment have been proposed. This reason has
generated various counter-arguments for developing nanotechnology.
Nano-bio-materials, for example, need to be carefully examined in
order to be safely used in a biological system. Through examining
pathway, the surface of the nano-materials must be manufactured to
minimize toxicity in order for drug delivery system to function. In this session, we will learn about
various risk factors of nano-bio-technology and have a time to ponder about the future of this
technology.
Parallel Session #6. Nano bio-RAISE
Like all technologies have their own social, ethical issues, nano-bio technology also has it.
Recently, as the nano-bio technology is developed and occupied its own status in society, several
societal and ethical issues are occurred in various fields in our society. And there are some
movements observed to consider and discuss about societal and ethical issues. One of those
movements is Nano-bio RAISE (Responsible Action on Issues in Society and Ethics). This
movement’s aim is to anticipate the societal and ethical issues likely to arise as nano-
biotechnologies develop. We are to listen from a member of Nano-bio RAISE which issues we can
see around us and how they do their efforts to deal with it.
