Impact Generator - Second Cohort 3

MADE OF IMPACT

At the Social Investment Lab, we believe that impact investments are made, not found. Pursuing a business model that embeds impact at its core requires more than just investment. It demands a fine combination of capital, capacity-building, data discipline, analytical rigour, dedication and time. The challenges are second to none but so is the reward of successfully tackling social issues.

One of our favourite stories is the one from John Kennedy, when he was visiting the NASA Space Center. There he crossed paths with a janitor who was carrying a broom and asked him “what are you doing?”. The janitor immediately responded “Mr. President, I am helping put a man on the moon”.

The entrepreneurs behind impact ventures all have the same common denominator: an unwavering sense of purpose in every single thing they do. That is why we have created the Impact Generator accelerator programme: to work alongside them all the way and help meet their ambitious goals.

These entrepreneurs are the reason why we give the extra mile every day at work. We are truly inspired and honoured to work with them. We trust you will be too.

During the financial crisis, I realised I had to rethink and change the direction of my life and that to do so would only make sense if other people’s

lives could also change. I have always been involved with cookery and seeing that it is a universal language, I came up with the idea of setting up a venue where people could get together around a table and socialise like in a family home, and where all my neighbourhood’s existing resources and wide range of cultures could be shared by all.

How did SmartFarmer come to be?

A world of sharing and mutual support. A world where there is a community kitchen in each neighbourhood.

Describe the world you want to live in.

Success means achieving and fulfilling dreams. But success means fighting for these dreams with great dedication and passion.

What does success mean to you?

Working with diversity at every level and bringing people together whatever their origin or circumstances.

What do you love about your work?

COZINHA POPULAR DA MOURARIAsocial inclusion

ADRIANA [email protected]

Lisbon. Through their weekly dinners and cultural activities, they were able to feed the community, foster tolerance and

appreciation for its cultural diversity.

IMPACT HYPOTHESIS

experiences, cozinha popular da mouraria is able to feed the community, foster social inclusion and create job opportunities for migrants and those who lack the training or have a criminal record.

MARKET

perhaps no force in modern life is as omnipresent yet overlooked as global migration. This creates a pressing need for cosmopolitan citites to find creative solutions to integrate migrants and outcasts

in a way that makes them feel safe and welcomed within their communities.

The project was created in a time where the care of people with dementia was focused on the brain, cognitive skills and the symptoms. We develop our

products, and entire approach, by focusing on the person first and the disease second. Our name - Humanamente - summarises just that.

How did Humana-mente come to be?

I would like to live in a world where being different is a good thing. A world where difference is welcomed and cherish. A world where everone is

seen as worthy and treated with respect regardless of their condition and where there are no lables or prejudice.

Describe the world you want to live in.

Success means freedom. I feel successful when I am able to live by my values, by being free to express them while not being afraid of having a dissonance

voice. If this freedom also means financially free, that doubles my success!

What does success mean to you?

What I love about my work is to foster a deep connection and sense of togetherness with the people that I work with and to combine different

backgrounds, life stories and experiences that help me to continue to innovate and help people with dementia.

What do you love about your work?

HUMANAMENTEageing

pATRÍcIA [email protected]

After years of research, Humanamente developed adequate products for adults with dementia based on cognitive and

sensory stimulation. The company also provides consultancy services to institutions and to formal carers.

IMPACT HYPOTHESIS

What differentiates Humanamente from other companies is its person centred approach. In portugal, most of the initiatives focus

on the symptoms of dementia, the adequate medication and physical restrainment.

MARKET

Ageing is one of the most pressing issues of our time. portugal has one of the most aged population in the world with a significant

amount of adults with dementia.

Impact Generator - Second Cohort10 11

Offline Portugal was born with the direct observation of the behavioural and social changes that resulted from the digital world we all live in

currently. It aims to create a movement of awareness regarding the overuse of technology, with the greatest focus being on smartphones and social media. The first project of this movement is Offline House, a digital detox house where people Disconnect to Reconnect with themselves, others and nature.

How did Offline come to be?

We want to live in a world where reality is stronger than virtual, a world where people connect with each other looking in the eyes and being

mindful. That one can enjoy a moment using the eye and their own perception and emotions, without the need of the virtual presence. A world where everyone is happy!

Describe the world you want to live in.

Success is the awareness brought to people´s lives, the change in their behaviour for this awareness. That we can contribute for a more mindful and

happy world. For observing these changes at the Offline House, we believe this success is also in the hands of all our “Offliners”, because them too are agents of behavioural changes spreading the experience and the benefits of being Offline.

What does success mean to you?

The most rewarding fact of our work is the impact in people´s lives. To have their feedback on how they are aware of the benefits of being disconnected

from their social media, and connecting with people and themselves in the space we provide. The real good friends we make and people we connect and that will be in our lives forever. Disconnecting!

OFFLINEtourism

RITA [email protected]

Motivated by the negative effects of digitalization on society, Offline offers its customers a chance to disconnect from their

online lives in order to reconnect with the present moment. The first project of Offline Portugal is a guesthouse in the south-

west Portugal.

IMPACT HYPOTHESIS

Offline Portugal promotes wellbeing though digital detox holidays and retreats for their customers. Additionally, it raises awareness

towards the effects of excessive digitalization on society. Their societal impact is embedded in their revenue model – with every

room sold providing a digital cleansing.

MARKET

Tourism in portugal is booming and digital-detox is a trending topic. The American psychiatric Association has been studying internet

addiction in the context of DSm-V since 2013. According to a study of ISpA (portuguese psychology Institute) in 2014, 75% of youngsters

are dependent of digital technologies.

Planetiers was born from an intense five years struggle of two young entrepreneurs willing to create a real profitable business with real positive

impact in the world and society. Consumers are increasingly concerned about environment and are buying online. The time to adapt to the modern digital tools is now!

How did Planetiers come to be?

We don’t just want to live in a different world. We know we will live in a different world. A world where the sustainable market is the rule, not the

exception, and where people prefer eco-friendly products, and do not consider a hazard alternative.A world where we will be celebrating “Earth Day” in tribute to our past struggle, instead of hoping for a more sustainable future.

Describe the world you want to live in.

For me, success means happiness with my family and pursuing my dream – to build a major agent for sustainable transformation worldwide. Success

also means to be able to dedicate your time to your own priorities.

What does success mean to you?

The blank pages. I love the way we can imagine how the world should be and put it into reality. To innovate and to create. Knowing that we don’t have

any rules for our imagination is the most pleasurable part of our work at Planetiers.

Ze was very impacted by a trip he did about 8 years ago as a professional surfer where he learnt how surfing could be used for social good. Ema,

as a clinical psychologist, had worked many years with kids at risk and always felt something more needed to be done to help them escape the cycles of trauma and exclusion. So, in the Summer 2016, we developed our fist pilot. Since then, we founded the Portuguese Association Surf for Good and have worked with over 100 kids.

How did WavebyWavecome to be?

We believe in a world where everyone can have the freedom and respect from others in order to live according to their own truth. In situations of

violence, silence and oppressions, kids suffer the most. Through Wave by Wave, we hope to break these cycles of violence imparting our chore values of respect, non-violence and generosity.

Describe the world you want to live in.

Having an impact, contributing for change, making people around us closer to what it is to be a human in this world, based on the principles of respecting

ourselves, others and mother nature.

What does success mean to you?

We love the transformations we witness everyday on the beach, so visible in the faces and behaviour of the kids we work with. We love working with

a diverse and talented team that inspire us to continue everyday despite of all the challenges, pains, difficulties and harsh reality we often have to deal with.

WAVE BY WAVEsocial inclusion

EmA ShAW EVANgElISTA and zÉ [email protected] / [email protected]

Wave by Wave promotes mental health and well-being in children and youngsters at risk through surf therapy and

contact with nature. The team is composed by surf, educational and mental health practitioners that ensure weekly camps with

groups of up to 16 children.

IMPACT HYPOTHESIS

This project promotes the confidence level and self-esteem of institutionalised children and youngsters. Their surf therapy activities

decrease the anxiety and depression indicators through time thereby diminishing the risk of social exclusion.

MARKET

In portugal there are 80.000 children and youngsters at risk where 10% are institutionalised temporary or permanently. The available

solutions of social and psychological rehabilitation are often inefficient to break the violent behaviours and address traumatic

experiences.
