Junior Track & Field athlete Holly Archer, whose hometown is Bury Saint Edmunds, England, won the 3,000-meter and finished fourth in the mile at the Tyson Invitational in Fayetteville, AR, on February 14th. It was the latest achievement in a stellar season from Archer, who also won the mile at the J.D. Martin Invitational at the University of Oklahoma last month. Next up for the Mustangs is the AAC Indoor Track & Field Championship on February 27-28 at the New Balance Track & Field Center in New York City. Congratulations, Holly!

New Coaching Staff and National Signing Day bring excitement to the Hilltop New SMU Head Coach Chad Morris wasted no time in hitting the recruiting trail after his hire was announced at a December press conference. Morris, who joins SMU after four seasons as Clemson University’s offensive coordinator, spent 16 years as a high school coach in Texas. Coach Morris took six teams to state championship games, notching three wins, and was named Coach of the Year 11 times. During his tenure at Clemson, the Tigers racked up a 41-11 record, including an ACC Championship (2011), four bowl appearances, including two BCS bowls, and finished in the Top 25 three times. Morris’ new staff on the Hilltop includes offensive coordinator Joe Craddock and defensive coordinator Van Malone. After a busy recruiting season, the full staff joined Mustang Club donors, season ticket holders, and fans at the Miller Event Center on February 4th to celebrate their inaugural signing class at SMU. The 2015 recruiting class features quarterback Ben Hicks, a four-star ESPN recruit and ranked No. 2 at the Elite 11 QB Camp, wide receivers James Proche and Kevin Thomas, both from DeSoto High School, and Xavier Castille from

Rockwall among others. All 22 members of the 2015 class are from Texas. The 2015 Football Season features home games against Big XII foe Baylor, local rival UNT, and a yet-to-be-announced third nonconference opponent, along with four conference contests against East Carolina, Temple, Tulsa, and Tulane. Season tickets are available starting at just $99. Call the SMU ticket office at 214-768-GAME or click here. Current season ticket holders interested in adding or upgrading seats should contact the Mustang Club at 214-768-2582. Season ticket renewals are due by March 2nd. Mustang Club gifts towards seat requirements are due by March 31st. We look forward to welcoming you to Ford Stadium this fall! #PonyUpTempo

College GameDay Comes to SMU ESPN’s popular “College GameDay” broadcast made a visit to Dallas on February 14th as the Men’s Basketball team prepared to take on the reigning national champions UCONN. Students and fans attended in full force for the morning broadcast on Saturday, returning to pack the house that evening and cheer the Mustangs on to a win. Freshman student Shameek Malviya won $18,000 from State Farm with a successful half-court shot in the weekly GameDay contest. Malviya is the second student to win the prize this season, and only the sixth to win since State Farm started sponsoring the half-court shot on GameDay in 2005.

SMU Athletes invited to upcoming national team tryouts SMU rower Savannah Moody was invited to last weekend's US National Team ID Camp in Chula Vista, California, which seeks to identify possible rowers to compete on the U-23 National Team. The California native competes in the stroke seat on the Mustangs' 1st Varsity 8+ crew. Following the 2013-14 season, she was named Second-Team All-Region by the College Rowing Coaches Association. "We are very proud of Savannah for her invite to camp," SMU Rowing Coach Doug Wright said. "She has the ability and the poise to have a very suc-

cessful showing at camp… we know she will represent herself and SMU with pride." Moody is not alone in being invited to attend tryouts for a national team this spring. Avery Acker, Morgan Heise, Katie Hegarty and Janelle Giordano, who was selected to compete on the U.S. National Collegiate Team in Europe last summer, will attend the USA Volleyball Women's National Team Open Tryouts Feb. 20-22. Acker, a junior, earned All-America accolades for the second straight season after recording 1,413 assists this season, along with a league-best 26 double-doubles. Heise was named Libero of the Year in the American Athletic Conference this season, averaging 5.13 digs per set. Giordano, an All-Conference selection for the second straight year, led the American with 160 blocks, the third-most in a season at SMU. Freshman Katie Hegarty played in 20 sets this season and finished with 29 kills, nine digs, and 19 blocks. The Mustang volleyball team finished the season with a program record of 26 wins to six losses, including their first defeat of a ranked opponents. Please join the Mustang Club in wishing luck to all the student-athletes competing in national competition this spring!

Quarterly Compliance Note Brought to You by the SMU Office of Compliance

Employing Current Student-Athletes It is permissible for boosters to employ current SMU student-athletes provided the following requirements are met: 1.) Student-athletes are required to report their employment to

the SMU Compliance Office. If you are planning to employ a student-athlete, please be sure they have completed the necessary paperwork with Compliance.

2.) Student-athletes may be paid only for work actually performed. 3.) Student-athletes must be paid the going rate in that locality

for their services. If an employee with similar experience and duties is making an hourly rate of $15, a student-athlete should be compensated similarly. Further, any employment benefits provided to the student-athlete should be benefits provided to all employees.

4.) Student-athletes may not be compensated based on their athletics reputation. A student-athlete may not be paid more

than the going rate because of the attention their employment brings to the business.

Violations of the above requirements could render the student-athlete ineligible to represent SMU in competition. Want to learn more about the NCAA Compliance Rules and what the Office of

Compliance does for the Athletics Department? Visit http://www.smumustangs.com/compliance/ for educational information

for boosters, parents, coaches, and others. Got a question for our compliance office? E-mail [email protected],

Former Football Coach Hayden Fry to receive inaugural Legends Award, SMU Athletics Hall of Fame Announces

Legendary SMU football coach Hayden Fry will receive the Legends Award, the SMU Lettermen's Board has announced. Fry will be the first individual to be honored with the newly created award at the SMU Hall of Fame Banquet on May 1. The Legends Award, presented by the SMU Lettermen's Association and the Department of Athletics, recognizes an individual who has made extraordinary

contributions to the success and legacy of the SMU Athletics Program. The timing of the award is significant, as 2015 marks the 50th anniversary of legendary wide receiver Jerry LeVias' arrival to SMU, as the first African American to receive an athletic scholarship in the Southwest Conference. Fry, who served as head coach and athletic director at the time, made the courageous decision to sign LeVias, thereby altering forever the course of collegiate athletics in the southern United States. "The impact of Coach Fry's historic decision to welcome Jerry LeVias as a scholarship student-athlete was transformative," said SMU Athletics Hall of Fame Committee Chair Jim Johnston, "It was this event in particular which led the Lettermen's Association and Athletics Department to honor Coach Fry with this award." Fry, the eighth head coach in SMU football history, was hired in 1962. During his 11 seasons on the Hilltop, Fry led SMU to three bowl appearances, the 1963 Sun Bowl, 1966 Cotton Bowl, and the 1968 Bluebonnet Bowl. Under Fry's leadership, SMU won its first

Southwest Conference Title in 18 years in 1966. Fry also coached some of the greatest players in school history such as LeVias, Chuck Hixson, Mike Richardson, Jim Livingston, Gary Hammond, John LaGrone and Mac White.

Fry, who played quarterback at Baylor from 1947-50, later coached at North Texas and then at Iowa from 1979-1998, where the Hawkeyes went 143-89-6 during his tenure. He also led Iowa to 14 bowl games, three Big Ten titles and three Rose Bowl appearances. Fry retired from coaching following the 1998 season, finishing his career with a record of 232-178-10, which at the time placed him 10th all-time among the collegiate marks. Fry's influence on college football can be seen on a national level, with former players and assistants including Oklahoma head coach Bob Stoops, Iowa's Kirk Ferentz, Wisconsin's Barry Alvarez, Arkansas' Bret Bielema and Kansas State's Bill Snyder, among others. Fry was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2003, in the same class as LeVias. Fry has received numerous other honors for his college football contributions, including induction into the North Texas Athletic Hall of Fame, the University of Iowa Athletic Hall of Fame, the Rose Bowl and Sun Bowl Halls of Fame, the Peach and Holiday Bowl Halls of Fame and the United States Marine Corps Hall of Fame. Fry also received the 2012 Paul "Bear" Bryant Award, given by the American Heart Association. Fry was also given the Amos Alonzo Stagg Award in 1997, presented by the American Football Coaches Association, in 2005. For information on purchasing tickets to the SMU Hall of Fame Banquet, please call 214-768-4314, email Jeff Lockhart at [email protected] or visit www.smu.edu/halloffame.

SMU Tennis launches 2015 season in new facility The SMU Men’s and Women’s tennis teams have a new home on the Hilltop, as the SMU Tennis Complex nears completion at Mockingbird and US-75 South.

The Turpin Stadium includes six outdoor courts and a viewing terrace, and the Ann and Brad Brookshire Family Pavilion includes six indoor courts and a patron balcony. All of the

With seating for 300 on the outdoor courts and 280 inside, with additional viewing space in the Styslinger Family Grand Viewing Terrace and the Edwin L. Cox Club Suite, Mustang fans have a variety of options from which to watch the team in competition. The training center includes home and visitor locker rooms, coaches’

offices, team meeting rooms, and a fitness center and athlete training room for treatment, injury prevention, and rehabilitation. The Men’s team currently sits at 9-1 on the season with wins over Nebraska and Ouachita Baptist on Saturday, Feb. 14th. The team plays its first road match of the season on Feb. 21st at Arkansas. Their match against University of Texas on January 31st drew a crowd of nearly 2000 to watch the team take on the top-10 ranked Longhorns. Men’s Head Coach Carl Neufeld was thrilled with the turnout. "I'm so proud of our fans and supporters that came out and watched an amazing match against this tremendous Texas team. This is an exciting beginning to our new future here." The Women’s team is 5-0, having shut out Northwestern State and defeated Midwestern State on Sunday, Feb. 15th.
