of individuals that are engaged in
crime and anti-social behaviour in the
town.
The new intranet can also be used to
report incidents and download images
captured on camera or CCTV as they
are occurring. Through the intranet,
every member also receives a weekly
e-newsletter with crime alerts and
information of benefit to businesses.

deliverable for the Partnership. If we
can prevent it supports the local
economy, vibrancy and growth of the
town. Loss prevention is a key agenda
for business crime initiative such Retail

that we are utilising this technology in
aiding us in preventing and detecting
crime, ASB and bringing offenders to
justice. We have witnessed how this
intranet benefits retailers and business-

It’s a Coffee Evolutionary Journey February saw the intrepid Bean
Brothers coffee company set off on a
coffee origin trip to Ethiopia. Brothers
Jeremy and James Perkins and
honorary brother Harry Dempsey set
off for warmer climes and to the land
where coffee began.
They met up in Addis Ababa with
colleagues from London and New York
and embarked on a 10 hour 4 x 4 jour-
ney into the bush. The purpose of the
trip was to taste some new season
coffees from the Sidamo and
Yirgacheffe regions and perhaps more
importantly, see first hand the
conditions that the coffee farmers and
their children were living in.
The trip was successful on both fronts;
the coffee was as expected outstanding
and continues to be a major component
in the ‘brothers’ seasonal espresso
named ‘Derek’ (obviously).
The second aim purely confirmed that
conditions in the area desperately need
to improve. Roads are being built slowly
and despite the U.N’s best efforts, food
is still in short supply. The trip con-
firmed to the team that a more direct
approach from them was the best way
ahead and as a consequence they have
decided to set up the Bean brothers
foundation.
In short, money from every bag of
coffee sold, be that 1kg bags sold to our
café partners or 227g bags sold via the
website or from their retail partners will
be directly invested in the coffee
growing regions of Ethiopia. In this way,
the Bean Brothers hope to affect real
change and to be able to see and show
their customers exactly what there
money has done and exactly whose
lives it has improved.

All were Norwegian and are pictured

for over 40 years. The guests came
down for a full Yorkshire breakfast be-
fore the game in their Town shirts and

them well and they all
said they would be

over the past 12 months and the sheer

Membership News One Community, the Kirklees Community Foundation, is
celebrating the award of its 200th funding grant
6
One Community, the Kirklees Com-
munity Foundation, is celebrating
the award of its 200th funding grant.
The Foundation was established in
2010, to encourage local giving, and
to act as an independent source of
funding for local voluntary activities.
It currently manages 12 charitable
funds, on behalf of individuals and
companies from across Kirklees.
The 200th grant was awarded to
Streetbikes, a community
organisation that uses cycling to
make a positive difference to the
lives of Kirklees folk. The group re-
ceived a grant of £500 from the Davy
Fund, to help them provide bicycle
maintenance classes for children.
The Davy Fund was established by
Ken Davy, Chairman of the
Huddersfield Giants and also the
SimplyBiz Group, with the aim of
supporting local youngsters
undertaking sporting activities.
Sarah Turvey, Finance Director at
SimplyBiz, has seen the fund make a
positive impact, since its inception in
the spring of 2010.
“We have been able to support a
wide range of sporting clubs and
groups over the past 5 years. There
are too many projects to mention
individually, but we have enjoyed
supporting many initiatives, and
assisted with the purchase of
equipment, training sessions
and sports kit.
“The fund has made a positive
difference to young peoples’
sporting endeavours across Kirklees,
and that’s what we wanted to
achieve when we established the
fund.
“One Community manages the giving
process for us, seeks applicants,
reviews funding applications, and
organises presentation events and
evaluation. It is easy to open a
charitable fund with One
Community, and very cost effective
when compared against managing
charity appeals in-house, or
establishing a separate Charitable
Trust.”
Gill Greaves, Co-ordinator of
Streetbikes, said: “We have received
funding through One Community for
a number of projects now.
And the fantastic support of the
Davy Fund has allowed us to hold
maintenance classes for children,
enabling them to learn about the
mechanical side of cycling, carry out
basic checks, and importantly to stay
safe while out riding their bikes.”
For more details about establishing a
fund with One Community, or
learning more about their funding
opportunities, visit the Foundation’s

Leading Kirklees recruitment special-
ists Stafflex and further education pro-
viders Kirklees College have joined
forces to provide an innovative new
recruitment initiative for 16-18 year
olds.
KC Works is a joint project that aims to
bridge the divide between employers
and prospective staff by providing a
seamless approach to recruiting college
graduates.
KC Works is a pioneering recruitment
training and development centre that
provides a dedicated space for profes-
sionally trained recruitment experts to
identify real job openings and match
applicants up by rigorously preparing
them for the selection and interview
process.
Working from a dedicated on-site
office, the Stafflex team will be on hand
to prepare the young recruits for em-
ployers from across the region, many of
whom are already clients of the long-
established recruitment firm.
The launch evening was attended by
over fifty representatives from local
businesses, education and associates of
Stafflex. Melanie Brooke, Vice Principal,
gave a short presentation in which she
described the role of the college in
forging relationships with businesses
across the region and detailed some of
the vocational courses the college
currently delivers specifically in re-
sponse to the demands of emergent
industries.
MP Jason McCartney made reference to
the need to identify and plug skills gaps
by forming valuable partnerships and
praised Stafflex and Kirklees College for
having made such a vital contribution to
the needs of the local economy.
“This makes so much sense.
Many of our local businesses are
expanding and they need more staff.
I’m absolutely behind this”, said Jason
McCartney.
Maggie Netherwood and Gary Driscoll,
senior recruitment specialists at Stafflex
explain, “There has always been a
demand from employers for new staff
with experience.
The paradox is that young recruits, es-
pecially 16-18 year olds who are only
just out of school, are most likely to be
lacking in the experience which is speci-
fied by most prospective employers.
There’s a mis-match between the re-
quirement for young, enthusiastic and
relatively inexpensive labour and
‘experience’.
The KC Works programme ensures that
tomorrow’s young recruits are not only
enthusiastic and highly motivated but
they are also work-ready.
As Huddersfield’s longest running
recruitment agency Stafflex know the
local jobs market intimately. We know
where the gaps are and what the skills
are that are most needed to fill those
gaps.
The KC Works initiative was designed
by us and Kirklees College after months
of discussions both with educationalists
and employers. We believe that we are
future-proofing our local industry by
forging early relationships with the edu-
cation providers who in turn have a
massive influence on the career pro-
spects of their students. This has poten-
tial to change lives and we are thrilled
to be a part of it’.
