Structure of the Learning Unit:
Integrated Activity
This lesson is aimed at integrating ICT into current, relevant class curriculum. Using this approach
enables learners to use the computer not only as a working tool but also as a relevant learning tool to
learn new concepts and skills or consolidate previously learnt work. This activity will take between 20 –
60 minutes (or 1-3 lessons) to complete depending on the ability of the learners and the time available.
Assessment
The continuous assessment is completed by the ICT teacher by means of evaluating each skill on the
skills matrix. Not all skills need to be assessed at the end of the activity. The ICT teacher can indicate on
the skills matrix whether the skill is being practised or developed by inserting a tick in the skills column
of that particular activity. Should the teacher wish to assess the skills, a symbol of 1, 2, 3 or 4 is
inserted into the matrix next to each skill assessed. In this way, the level of ICT competency as well as
the progress of each learner can be monitored. This matrix may be printed or photocopied for each
learner.

OPTIONAL EXTENSION ACTIVITY (20 – 60 MINUTES)
In order to promote relevant discussion, the following questions are
posed by the educator to the learners:
- What materials can be recycled?
- Which materials can NOT be recycled?
- Why should we recycle?
A short discussion takes place about recycling, which materials are
recyclable and how we should go about recycling these materials.
Explain to the learners that they are going to complete a crossword puzzle
about recyclable items. From the list of words given, they will have to
choose which are recyclable items and which are not.
Task: Today you are going to complete a crossword puzzle all about
items which can be recycled. The clues will be given to you in a
colour-coded table. You will have to decide which is the correct
word to be used in the crossword puzzle from the two options in the
colour-coded clue.
Note to the educator:
This task requires the template: rainbow recycling.doc to be loaded onto
the desktop or onto a shared drive. You may also need to explain the
concept of a table including cells, columns and rows.
See the additional folder “Bonus Goodies” found in the Recycling/Updates
folder for a Powerpoint presentation and other goodies regarding Recycling.
1. Open the template: rainbow recycling.doc by
double clicking on the shortcut on the desktop.
2. Save your document into your digital portfolio →
file → save as → locate your portfolio→ double
click →type a suitable name in the file name box
→ save.

words is a recyclable item. This is the correct word to be inserted into
