INTEGRATION WITH THE TEACHING OF
LISTENING, SPEAKING, READING
& WRITING SKILLS. Cacah, Ngangah, Rarah
WHAT ARE THE FOUR SKILLS?
• Reading (comprehension skill)
• Listening (comprehension skill)
• Speaking (production skill)
• Writing (production skill)
INTEGRATING GRAMMAR WITH OTHER LANGUAGE SKILLS.
One ways in which integration of grammar withthe four skills can be achieved is :
• By systematized mapping of the grammar syllabus with a thematically-conceived series of units.
• In simpler words, it is basically teaching grammar according to the correct sequence & level.e.g teaching present tense, then move on to past tense & future tense. (sequence)
INTEGRATING GRAMMAR WITH EACH LANGUAGE SKILLS
Each of the skills provide the content or context for the practice of the grammar rules besides they also contributes in their own unique way to grammar listening and speaking skills.
A) LISTENING & SPEAKING
Most grammar presentation and drills are oral and therefore listening and speaking are integral to the successful learning of a grammatical pattern.
INTEGRATION OF
GRAMMAR IN LISTENING
& SPEAKING
SONGS & NURSERY RHYMESSongs are very popular in grammar teaching for a number of reasons.
1) Interesting and relaxing
2) The beats of the songs aids memory
3) Contributes variety
4) Many songs have a lot of in-built repetition of structures and this is good for consolidation and internalization of structures.
5) Integration of pronunciation, intonation, stress & rhythm can be achieved.
Examples 1 :• Sing a song entitle ‘If you happy and you know
it’.
Example 2 :• Sing the song and do the actions.
Example 3 : • Listen to the song, and answer comprehension
questions
B) READING
Reading text can become rich contexts for the practice of a variety of grammatical form. When structural readers are used for extensive reading, these can provide the intensive practice necessary for the internalization of grammar rules.
INTEGRATION OF GRAMMAR IN READING
• Using a text
• Students read a passage which contains examples of the new language (english), then answer comprehension questions.
• The questions focus on the new language (english) being introduced, so that students’ attention is drawn to it.
EXAMPLEIn a text, a students read a passage in a simplepast tense used to describe scenes and events, then answer questions, thus getting plentifulopportunities to practice that tense.
C) WRITING
• Writing provides real and extended contexts for the practice of specific grammar items.
• Such as exercises as editing and creative writing provide context for the sensitive used of grammar in dynamic interaction with other consideration in the communicative process.
INTEGRATION OF GRAMMAR IN WRITING
• Using personal experience
• This kind of exercise is very good for getting maximum output from minimum input.
• Each sentences can be filled in a different ways by pupils, that means that, the number of opportunities to hear the correct form is greatly increased in a class.
EXAMPLE :Complete these statements as truthfully as you can :
1) The first thing I do when I get up in the morning is ……
2) As soon as I realize another person is angry with me, I …………………
