ReasonableInterpretationandJustificationHorizonCharterSchoolcontinuestoeffectivelymeetEnd1.2.aasevidencedthroughthevolumeofclassesoffered,thenumberofstudentsenrolledinthosecourses,andtheprod‐uctsoftheirlearningexperiences.DataDirectlyAddressingtheInterpretationTheVisualandPerformingArts(VAPA)Standards(CDE,2001)addressthedisciplinesof:

Foreachartsdisciplinethecontentstandardsaregroupedunderfivevisualandperformingartsstrands:

artisticperception creativeexpression historicalandculturalcontext aestheticvaluing connections,relations,andapplications

Ateachgradelevel,pre‐kindergartenthroughgradeeight,contentstandardsarespecifiedforeachstrand.Forstudentsingradesninethroughtwelve,theproficientlevelofachievementcanbeat‐tainedattheendofoneyearofhighschoolstudywithinanartsdisciplineafterthestudenthasat‐tainedthelevelofachievementrequiredofallstudentsingradeeight.Manystudentsalsoelecttotakeadditionalartscoursesattheadvancedlevel.Whileschoolsanddistrictsacrossoursix‐countyareaareeliminatingVAPAclassesandprograms,HorizonCharterSchoolscontinuetoembracethebodyofresearchthatfindswhenthevisualandperformingartsarewovenintoarigorouscoreacademiccurriculum,learningandexpressionismagnified.Theimportanceoftheseartscannotbediminished.TheVisualandPerformingArtsStandardsstate:

Dance,music,theatre,andthevisualartshaveenduredinallculturesthroughouttheagesasauniversalbasiclanguage.Theartsconveyknowledgeandmeaningnotlearnedthroughthestudyofothersubjects.Studyinand

throughtheartsemploysaformofthinkingandawayofknowingbasedonhumanjudgment,invention,andimagination.Artseducationoffersstudentstheopportunitytoenvision,setgoals,determineamethodtoreachagoalandtryitout,identifyalternatives,evaluate,revise,solveproblems,imagine,workcollaboratively,andapplyself‐discipline.Astheystudyandcreateinthearts,studentsusethepotentialofthehumanmindtoitsfullanduniquecapacity.Thevisualandperformingartsareavitalpartofawell‐roundededucationalprogramforallstudents.

All of our programs and home/indepependent study have opportunities for students to explore the visual and performing arts. Classes are offered to all students beginning in Kindergarten. Some examples are the following:

Innovation) Meet the Masters Art Program at the Auburn Area Classes Guitar – Rock Band at the Auburn Area Classes Poetry and the Arts at the Placerville Area Classes Mission to Space at the Roseville Area Classes Aloha Dancers – Vendored classes Sacramento Ballet – Vendored classes Upstage Productions – Vendored classes Art: Acrylic Painting, Colored Pencil Painting, Pen & Ink Painting and Watercolor Painting

The programs report that VAPA activities are infused throughout their education. For example, at the Lincoln Montessori Community Co-op, all classes have art approximately every three weeks; classes perform plays; and students take field trips to theater performances grades 3-8. The Accel-erated Learning Academy has a variety of core knowledge enrichment activities as well as in-class activities such as debates, skits, living history posters, movies, puppet shows, and simulations. Following is a summary of the classes offered to our students in each of the VAPA areas:
