Cambodia Maize Production
1. In Cambodia, maize is widely adapted to soils in the
higher rainfall upland area.
2. The main variety currently grown in Cambodia is red
maize (also known as yellor maize) which is grown for
the feed market, whereas white maize is grown for
human consumption.
3. Maize is second in importance after rice in terms of
cultivated area and production.
4. The main production area are the provinces
Battambang and the Municipality of Pailin. Maize is also
grown in Kampong Cham, Kampot, Kandal, Banteay
Meanchey and Takeo Provinces.
5. Maize has been indentified as having a large potential
for growth in production and profit for the Cambodian
farmers.
6. Maize is one of the worlds most important cereal crop
after rice and wheat, and because of increasing global
demand for stockfeed, especially as China develops a
greater demand for meat, it is predicted that maize
demand will continue to rise.
7. As new agronomic methods and technology are
adopted it is hoped that the average Cambodian maize
yield will continue to increase up to around 10 t/ha.
8. Maize is also grown on lowland rice soils that are hard
setting, poorly structured and low in nutrient levels due
to leaching. Yields on these soils are very low and maize
production is considered uneconomical.

Maize Production, distribution and usage
1. Average annual production is over 660,000 tonnes between
2008 and 2010. Maize is the third largest crop produced in
Cambodia, behind rice 7,175,473 ton and cassava3,676,232 ton (on average).
2. Red maize production is concentrated in ten provinces.
3. Red maize grown in the western provinces with the
majority exported to Thailand. For this reason, mainly Thai
varieties are grown. The remainder is sold into the local
market in Phnom Penh or sent to Vietnam. The provinces of
Battambang, Banteay, Meanchey and Pailin accounted for
about 91% of red maize production in 2004-2005. Refer
Table 1.
4. Quality characteristics preferred by buyers include grain of
good even colour with no mould or soil contamination.
Price influenced by crop quality as well as market demand.
5. Maize export consist entirely of the raw commodity andalmost ends up at Charoen Pokphand-Cambodia feed
processing facilities in Thailand.
