Regards economic diplomacy as very necessary to open up business opportunities for European enterprises, and for bringing growth, competitiveness and jobs to Europe.

What do enterprises need to grow?
• Provide access to markets, both (i) the EU single market and (ii) external markets
• Improve access to resources in terms of (i) finance (ii) skills, (ii) raw materials, (iv) energy
• Foster innovation as the EU is lagging behind in patents for emerging technologies.
• Reform regulation for small firm growth as we need business friendly environment
SMEs face difficulties for internationalisation
• First barrier is related to the "smallness" intrinsic characteristics of SMEs
• Second barrier is external to the firm and stems from the domestic environment in each Member State.
• Third category of barrier affecting SMEs internationalisation relates with trade and investment.
