Introduction to the Marie Skłodowska-Curie action
EU Marie Skłodowska-Curie actions - opportunities for researcher mobility and cooperation
ASEM - Erasmus+ Information Day Riga, Latvia 29.04.2015.
Your next career move!
Marie Skłodowska Curie (1867-1934) moved from Poland to France in 1891. She was convinced that Science is essentially international and stated this while serving in the 1920s on the Council of the League of Nations and on its international committee on intellectual cooperation. She was the first woman to be awarded a Nobel Prize, the only woman to be awarded in two fields, 1903 in Physics and 1911 in Chemistry.
“After all, science is essentially international, and it is only through lack of the historical sense that national qualities have been attributed to it.”
Horizon 2020: Three Pillars, Three Priorities

from academia & industry
MSCA: What? Who? How?
6
What: Mobility Rule
The researchers shall not have resided or carried out their main activity in the country of their future host organisation for more than 12 month in the 3 years prior to the reference date (relevant deadline for submission of proposals (IF),
or recruitment by the host organisation (ITN)
7
Who: Researchers Of any nationality
No age limit for researchers (but research experience)
Early-stage researchers (ESR):
no PhD and less than four years of research experience at the time of recruitment (ITN, COFUND) or secondment – temporary transfer (RISE) by the host organisation
Experienced researchers (ER): in possession of a doctoral degree or at least four years of research experience at the relevant deadline for submission of proposals (IF), recruitment (COFUND) or secondment (RISE) by the host organisation
8
How: Innovative Training Networks
Innovative Training Networks (ITN):
Training of PhD students, early stage researchers
International and inter-sector networks to structure the training and provide additional competences – 3 “organisations”: • European Training Networks (ETN)
• European Industrial Doctorates (EID)
• European Joint Doctorates (EJD)
Actors – EU and third countries
Scope: • Supports joint research training programs and/or joint doctoral
programs
• Increase capacity of researchers
• Transfer of skills and knowledge
• Attract entrepreneurial researchers 9
ITN: Third Country Participation
Innovative Training Networks (ITN) – Third Country Participation:
Host organisations from third countries can participate above the minimum partnership of three European organisations (or at least two for EID). If they are ICPC (‘non-industrialised’) countries they can also request EU funding to pay for fellows hosted at the sites of the ICPC partners. Funded host organisations can grant Marie Curie fellowships to researchers from any nationality, so third country nationals are eligible to apply for open fellowship positions at any funded ITN
10
1.European Training Networks (ETN)
At least 3 partners in 3 different EU-MS/AC (Typical consortium size 6 to 10 participants)
Research and training (The project can fund doctoral and/or masters’ degree students)
Private sector partners most welcome
Project Duration 4 years
Typical Project Budget €3 – 5 million
11
2.European Industrial Doctorates (EID)
At least 2 partners in 2 different MS/AC
One partner has to be from the private sector
The researchers must spend at least 50% of their time working in the non-academic sector
Project Duration 4 years
Typical Project Budget €1 – €5 million
12
3.European Joint Doctorates (EJD)
At least 3 partners in 3 different MS/AC (Typical consortium size 6 to 10 participants )
At least 3 partners must be entitled to award doctoral degrees
The Beneficiaries who form the core of the consortium can include a mix of participants from the academic and non-academic sectors. Additional participants can get involved as Partner organisations
The project can fund doctoral students only and upon completion of the EJD programme, a researcher must receive a joint, double or multiple doctoral degree
Project Duration 4 years
Typical Project Budget €3 – 5 million
13
How: Individual Fellowships
Individual Fellowships (IF):
Support to individual researchers
Enhance creative and innovative potential of experienced researchers
Support to career development and new competences through international or inter-sector mobility
Transfer of knowledge: EU, Associated Countries, Third Countries
European Fellowship, Re-Integration, Global Fellowships (Return Phase)
14
Individual Fellowships (IF)
Individual Fellowship
European Fellowship
Global Fellowship
Standard European fellowship
Career restart
Reinte- gration
15
IF: Third Country Participation
Individual Fellowships (IF):
Third country nationals can apply for a European Fellowship.
Global Fellowships are only open to nationals or long-term residents of EU Member States or Associated Countries. Long term residence means a period of full-time research activity of at least 5 consecutive years
16
European Fellowships
Coming from anywhere 12-14 months
Any experienced researcher may submit only one proposal to the MCSA call
17
Global Fellowships
12-24 months for the outgoing phase plus return phase in Europe
18
Individual Fellowships (IF)
Proposals are allocated for evaluation either to one of the
8 main specific panels
Chemistry
Physics Mathematics
Life Sciences
Social Sciences and Humanities
Environment and Geosciences
Information Science and Engineering
Economic Sciences
19
How: Research and Innovation Staff Exchange
Research and Innovation Staff Exchange (RISE)
Objective
Promote international and inter-sectoral collaboration through research and innovation staff exchange
Foster a shared culture of research and innovation
Scope:
• Organisations from EU and third countries
• Sharing of knowledge, new skills acquisition
• Early-stage and experienced researchers, technical staff
• Exchange with institutions from third counties can be inter-sectoral and within the same sector
20
RISE: Third Country Participation
Research and Innovation Staff Exchange (RISE)
Host organisations from third countries can participate above the minimum partnership of two European organisations
21
RISE: Main Features
Duration of projects: maximum 4 years
Minimum eligibility condition: participants in 3 different countries (at least 2 EU28MS/AC)
Partnership agreement recommended
Researchers, duration of support: Secondment of staff members for 1-12 months (staff
members: ESR, ER, innovators, administrative, managerial and technical staff)
Participants can be from the private or non-private sector
22
How: COFUND
COFUND: Co-funding mechanism for national mobility programs
Motivation system for new or expansion of existing programs
To foster excellence in researcher’s training, mobility and career development
Multi-annual proposals for new or existing doctoral or fellowship programmes
23
COFUND: Third Country Participation
COFUND: Co-funding mechanism for national mobility programs
Funded host organisations can grant Marie Curie fellowships to researchers from any nationality,
depending on the eligibility criteria of the funded programme –
third country nationals are eligible to apply for open COFUND fellowship positions
