Neutron stars are city size stellar objects that are so dense gravity is approximately two billion times stronger than that on Earth. Some neutron stars exist in binary systems where their strong gravitational fields pull matter off the companion star. As the matter hits the
surface of the neutron star they ‘glow’ in X-rays and are some of the brightest X-ray sources in the sky. This talk will describe how the extreme conditions associated with neutron star binary systems can be used to investigate physics that cannot be replicated in laboratories.

Tiny bubbles, huge applications! Microbubbles and nanobubbles have been linked to everything from curing cancer to producing tastier fish! This talk aims to sort the fact from fiction whilst also discussing some of the less well known applications in industries such as cleaning and agriculture.
The talk will also look at some of the issues surrounding these bubbles including the fact that some of them might not exist!

A Theory of Ghosts Ghostly apparitions have a rich history but what is really known about them? Can they be explained scientifically? Here we will look at reported observations and develop a Theory of Ghosts that appears to explain many ghostly properties. We will also explore the design of GhostBusters equipment and how ghosts
could be detected, investigated and captured. Finally, we discuss what to do if confronted by an apparition.

Thunderstorms are ever-present across the globe and for centuries have had a strong cultural influence. This talk will explore what we know about the physics of thunderstorms and how this has helped us to understand how and where they occur, both on the earth and on other planets, the
important role they play in balancing the earth’s energy budget, how to mitigate the weather hazards they create and how we can use this knowledge to make predictions and give warning.
All lectures start at 7:30pm (except for 2nd October). We finish by 9:00pm.
