Eleventh Sunday in Ordinary Time Life calls for a lot of patience and trust. You can’t plant an acorn today and expect to sit in the shade of an oak tree tomorrow. The same holds true for spiritual matters. We have to make the effort. But then we must be patient and trust that God’s grace will take over. First Reading (Ez 17:22-24) The prophet foretells the fall of Jerusalem. At the same time he tells of the establishment of a universal kingdom (by the Messiah). Second Reading (2 Co 5:6-10) Since Paul’s priority at all times is to please the Lord, he has no fears of appearing before him.

Gospel (Mk 4:26-34) Two parables about the steady growth of the Kingdom of God from insignificant beginnings, a growth brought about by God.

Scripture Note In Mark 4:1-34 we have a collection of parables, most of which deal with the growth of seed. They serve as a commentary on what has been happening in Jesus’ proclamation of the kingdom. The prophet Ezekiel foretold that God would take a twig from the top of the cedar and plant it in Zion (First Reading). Under God’s protective power that twig would grow into a great cedar. Thus Ezekiel dreamed that God would transplant the exiled people of Israel back to the land of their fathers. He glimpsed a future son of David whose kingdom would be universal. The promise is fulfilled in Jesus who ushers in the kingdom of God. The parables of the seed that grows by itself and the mustard seed were meant to encourage the early Church which was worried about the slow growth of the kingdom. They were telling the disciples to be patient, to trust, and not to expect instant results. Through the power of God, from small and insignificant beginnings the kingdom will grow into something great.

Celebration of the Sacraments

“The purpose of the sacraments is to sanctify men, to build up the Body of Christ and, finally, to give worship to God. Because they are signs, they also instruct. They not only presuppose faith, but by words and objects they also nourish, strengthen and express it. That is why they are called ‘sacraments of faith’.”

— Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1123 Eucharist Saturday Vigil Masses: 4:00 PM (Nov-Apr), 5:30 PM

Sunday Masses: 7:30 AM, 9:00 AM, 10:45 AM, 12:15 PM

Daily Masses: Monday through Saturday 8:00 AM Chapel of the Blessed Sacrament: Monday through Friday 7:00 AM - 7:00 PM Saturday 7:00 AM - 5:00 PM Sunday 7:00 AM - 5:00 PM Baptism Requesting the Sacrament of Baptism for a child involves a serious obligation and a faith commitment on the part of both parents. To prepare both parents for this task, they will be requested to attend a Baptismal Preparation prior to the Baptism. To register, call the Parish Office (231-0671). Typically the Sacrament of Baptism is celebrated on the 2nd Saturday of each month, however, if that is not suitable other arrangements can be made. A date for Baptism cannot be scheduled until the necessary preparation has been completed. Parents are encouraged to begin preparation prior to the birth of their child. Confirmation Candidates are those already baptized and who have received the necessary formation in religious education. Candidates must be at least in the 9th grade to receive this Sacrament. Reconciliation The Sacrament is celebrated each Saturday 11:00 AM -12:00 Noon. Anointing of the Sick The Sacrament is administered on request to those who are ill at home, in the hospital or nursing home. Please call the Parish Office (231-0671). It also is administered on the First Saturday of every month after the 8:00 AM Mass. Matrimony Congratulations on your engagement. Call the Parish Office (231-0671) to make arrangements at least six months in advance. It is necessary that either the prospective bride, groom or their family are registered members of Holy Cross Parish. Holy Orders If you feel you may have a vocation to serve the people of God in the Priesthood of Jesus Christ, contact Fr. Brian Lehnart at the Diocesan Vocation Office (561-775-9555) or speak to one of the parish priests.

Saints of the Week for June 17

We will, on a weekly basis, run a brief biography on the lives of the Saints whose feast days we will celebrate that week. Our Catholic faith is very rich especially because of our devotion to the Saints. They are wonderful role models in helping us to live a Christian life. The one common virtue they all shared is humility.

Saint Romuald June - June 19

Romuald was born at Ravenna in the middle of the tenth century. He became a priest and spent many years traveling in search of solitude and in building small communities. He strenuously opposed the monastic decadence of his day, while himself striving for virtue and perfection. Romuald is founder of the Camaldolese branch of the Benedictine Order. He died on June 19, 1027.

Saint Aloysius Gonzaga - June 21

Aloysius was born in 1568 near Mantua, Lombardy, into the princely family of the Castiglione. He was raised by a devout mother and seemed greatly inclined to religious life. After transferring his princely inheritance to his brother, he entered the Society of Jesus at Rome. As a student there, he ministered to the plague stricken in the hospitals, fell victim to the disease and died in 1591.

Saint Paulinus of Nola - June 22

Paulinus was born at Bordeaux, France in 355. He gained political office, married and had a son. Desiring a more austere life, he received baptism and in 393 he renounced all his possessions, began to live a monk’s life and went to live at Nola in Campania. After being chosen bishop, Paulinus promoted the cult of Saint Felix, aided pilgrims and devouted his efforts to improving the wretched conditions of the day. He died in 431.

Saint John Fisher and Saint Thomas More - June 22

John Fisher was born in 1469, studied theology at Cambridge and was ordained a priest. He became bishop of Rochester, where he lived austerely and proved to be an outstanding shepherd to his flock, whom he visited often. His books were written to refute the errors of the day. Pope Paul III named him a cardinal while in prison for his opposition to Henry VIII’s divorce from Catherine. Thomas More was born in 1477. He studied at Oxford, married and had a son and three daughters. He became royal chancellor and wrote books to promote good government and defend the faith. He refused to take the oath following the Act of Succession, was imprisoned and subjected to much official harassment. At the command of King Henry VIII, whose divorce they opposed, both men were beheaded in 1535 - John Fisher on June 22, Thomas More on July 6.

Community Outreach

As you are aware, we have joined up with the outreach programs at St. Helen’s Catholic Church and the local St. Vincent de Paul Society. During the month of April, St. Vincent de Paul helped 139 individuals and St. Helen’s helped 55 individuals. This help consisted of utilities, medication, accommodations and gasoline. Those who benefit from these programs are all locals in need of assistance. The people of Holy Cross should be extremely pleased that they are a part of this outreach because of your generosity to the Community Outreach Fund. A special thanks to all involved. We commend the voluntary work done by Lou and his assistants at the St. Vincent de Paul Society along with Jimmy and his assistants at St. Helen’s. It is refreshing to see that all these people give of their time on a volunteer basis. May God bless their ministries.

Alive in You From June 3 though 10, 20 plus teens and adults from Holy Cross traveled to Tampa, FL for the annual Youth on a Mission Service Week sponsored by Alive in You, Catholic Conference and Service Camp. They left the comforts of home to sleep on the floors of Bishop McLaughlin Catholic High School and ate minimally. Service projects included building handicap ramps and decks, painting, creating gardens and clearing walkways, all for the disabled residents of Angelus. Along with all of their hard work, they celebrated Mass, prayed the Rosary daily and gathered in prayer as a community with Scripture and song. A special recognition to the Holy Cross Youth Coordinator, Diane Jellie, along with Bob Howlett, Augie Jellie and Richard Schlitt. Thank you to all who prayed and supported this endeavor for our teens of Holy Cross.

WE ARE STEWARDS . . .

and this is how we live out our stewardship! The people were like sheep without a shepherd. We are the sheep and Christ is our Shepherd. But we need to be shepherds to others at times, too. We need to look for those times when we can be the one to whom someone can turn for help.

Treasure - The offertory for the weekend of June 9/10 totaled $15,475.16, of which $2,008.16 was from online contributions. The second collection for Black & Indian Missions/Home Missions totaled $4,150.00.

Many things happen behind the scenes in a parish that often go unnoticed. One of these duties is the changing of the missalettes three times a year. We thank our Sacristans, Marie and Carroll, along with the following volunteers who perform this task:

Peggy Andre Dawn Bottomley Tina Carone Rae DelVecchio Marci Kuberski Frank Mannino Helen Rafala Evelyn Taggart

May God bless and reward your stewardship.

FOOD DRIVE

We will have a Food Drive next weekend, June 23/24 to help the Food Pantry of I.R.C. and Our Father’s Table. There is always a great

need over the summer months for food. Please bring canned goods or non-perishable items when you come to Mass next weekend.

June 17 we celebrate Father’s Day. We wish all fathers happiness. The following prayer is very appropriate for this occasion:

God our Father, in your wisdom and love you made all things. Bless

these men, may they be strengthened as Christian fathers. Let the example of their faith and love shine forth. Grant that we may honor them always with a

spirit of profound respect and for those who are deceased, may they rest in peace.

Grant this through Christ our Lord...Amen.
