Ascension Sunday, May 16, 2010
Dear brothers and sisters,
We celebrate this Sunday the ascension of Jesus to heaven where he will be united with his Father. This event in the life of our Lord is very much a part of the Paschal Mystery.
As the Divine Word he existed with the Father in the beginning, but in time took our human nature to be with us and to save us. Now that his mission is completed, he sits at the right hand of the Father and reigns with him in glory. He also intercedes for us and sends the Holy Spirit that we may proclaim the Good News to the ends of the earth. May we continue the mission he has en-trusted to us.
Let me thank Vivian Araujo and the members of the Filipino Catholic Club of St. Joseph Church for do-nating the beautiful statue of Saint Damien. May God reward your generosity.
God bless you, Fr. Samuel E. Loterte, SSS
“Mental Health Day”
Sunday, May 16, is Mental Health Day. If you know someone who has a mental illness, perhaps, you could set aside some time this weekend to be with him or her. Or, if someone is more seriously ill at this time, you might want to give that person’s caregiver some relief from his/her responsibility.
In any case, all of us can offer a special prayer for all those people who are suffering from a mental illness and their families. Our neighbors dealing with this issue will really appreciate it.
Life goes on
On our TV screens,
if nowhere else,
we have heard and seen
the horrors of death
and destruction.
What to be done?
Have we an option
beyond that of wringing
our hands?
Remember we not
the Calvary Hill
where Mary stood?
Remember his chosen
friends.
How they ran from Him
and were yet forgiven.
Did he not come to bring
Life?
And Life goes on.
And the part for us,
involves no more
than at second hand,
Is to believe.
To live the promise
He gave His life to bring.
To live on in the hope of
His Word. Frances Makower RSCJ

Sunday Reflection Father Greg Friedman, O.F.M.
Feast of the Ascension (C) by Father Greg Friedman, O.F.M.
Acts 1:1‐11 ; Ps 47:2‐3, 6‐7, 8‐9; Eph 1:17‐23 or Heb 9:24‐28; 10:19‐23, Lk 24:46‐53
A really good storyteller will never tell a story quite the same way twice. Luke is a great story-teller: Today we hear his two versions of the Ascension of Jesus, one from Luke's Gospel, the other from his Acts of the Apostles. As you might expect, the two ac-counts have some differences. For example, the Gospel's story of the Ascension takes place on Easter night, while in Acts, it is situated 40 days later. This and other differences remind us that these accounts are not strict history, but rather written to teach a spiritual point. Luke locates both accounts in Jerusalem, where Jesus has won victory in his death and resurrection. From there, the Church will spread to the whole world. The Gospel version evokes the past: We hear Jesus explain how it was prophesied that he would suffer. In Acts, his words point to the future, to the com-missioning of his apostles as witnesses through the power of the Holy Spirit they will soon receive. We're fortunate to have both versions of this special moment in the life of the Church. We need to remember how the story of Jesus fulfills God's plan and promises of old. We must also be challenged to witness to Christ, empowered by his Holy Spirit.
Today, We Receive Jesus! (in no particular order ) Nathan N., Caleb R., Chenoa R., Shanelle J., Breanna K., Kelvin K., Skyler‐Jay P., Daphne B., Isaac K., Kyle E., Dylan B., Bobbie C., Jensen‐Robert D., Michael P., Raven O., Consuela R., Briane S.

St. Joseph School Cardinal News
1st Annual Cardinal Ball Recognizes Leaders and Student Needs
Surrounded by a silent auction with theme-related bas-kets running from Family Nights to everything your dog or cat could ever want; live auction items including paintings from some of the most renowned local artists, like Linus and Jane Chao; red and gold decorations an-nouncing the Saint Joseph School colors, and welcom-ing alumni and friends; Saint Joseph School launched its first annual Cardinal Ball. For years, SJS has filled its community, locally and globally, with leaders in business, education, admini-stration, law, church-related activities, and community organizations, to name just a few areas. 2010’s event, “A Legacy of Leadership” began the recognition of the first recipients of many to come. Recognized with the Saint Joseph School 2010 “Outstanding Leadership Award” were the following alumni: Class of 1963, Dr. Ivan Lui-Kwan, Director, Starn, O’Toole, Marcus & Fisher, A Law Corporation; Class of 1966, Dr. Marlene Nachbar Hapai, Regent Emeritus, University of Hawaii and Professor Emeritus, Biology, University of Hawaii at Hilo; Class of 1970, Mr. Patrick Aiona Sr., President & Owner, Aiona Car Sales; Class of 1974, Mr. Keith Vieira, Sr. Vice President & Director of Operations, Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, Inc.; and Class of 1976, Dr. Cheryl Ramos, Associate Professor of Psychology, University of Hawaii at Hilo. Participants were also dazzled with the creative and innovative trash fashion show, “Imagine This” with pieces designed and modeled by Saint Joseph School students: Catelyn Hakoda, Sara Tollestrup and Natalie Quinajon, with additional models: Jenna Lee Rapoza, Whitney Cardoza, Savannah Brinkman, Melia Cave-doni, Melia Nemeth, and Jayla Nakayama. Lisa Frank-lin, advisor and school art teacher, provided script and flow and even modeled a piece herself adding to the wonderment of the unique fashions.
Jake Galves, radio announcer of Native station, volun-teered his auctioneering skills and ended the program portion of the evening with a very successful live auc-tion to provide tuition assistance to SJS students and their families. Throughout the evening “Vizion 20-20” provided both background music and dance music which ended a fun-filled evening for all. The Event Committee consisted of: Dr. Marlene Hapai, Chair; Rowena Austria, Jody Montell, Lisa Muragin, Joanne Balberde-Kamalii, Lisa Franklin, and Beth Andrade. In the words of school principal, Victoria Torcolini: “What a great event! This has opened the door to sharing our outstanding alumni with others and recognizing their accomplishments. In the 9 months I have been here, I am so impressed with the quality of students we have in our classrooms and the alumni that have given so much back to their communities. I look forward to next year’s Cardinal Ball and the recogni-tion of more of these great people.” Article by: Marlene Hapai Photo by: Ralph Smith

You can either email or call your agenda items into the parish office or call Wendy Cortez at 808-934-7909. This will be a very important meeting because we will start our own Religious Education Pro-gram in the Fall. Parents with kids are invited to attend the meeting if you have inter-est and/or special concerns regarding the Religious Ed program at Malia. KOA BOWL OFFERING: The people of Malia are wonder-fully generous. It is quite obvious that you love your Church. The Finance Committee is very diligent and is making sure that we are good stewards of your gifts to the parish. We will project a budget for the next fiscal year which is based on an average of $1,500.00 in the KOA Offering Bowl each week-end. So far this year we are aver-aging around $1,200.00 each weekend. We need to use some of the rent money to pay operational expenses. The ideal would be to use the rent money solely for building repair and maintenance. Either through more parishioners giving or parishioners giving more, we will try to average $1,500.00 each weekend starting in July. MAHALO for your generosity.
