Pink is pretty, purple is nice, white is classic. But if you want to make a statement or do something different with your wedding, YELLOW should be your go-to hue. Why?
• Yellow is versatile: Try bold and bright, soft and
whimsical, or add in a golden touch for a classic feel.
• The colour of butter, sunshine, and fresh
lemonade, yellow is a unique, exciting choice
for a wedding palette because it is so rarely
done and therefore, it’s sadly underrated.
• Yellow is scientifically proven to make people
feel healthier and happier. Not that you’re
going to need a pick-me-up on your wedding
day, but why argue with science?
• It’s complementary! Yellow’s ability to pair well
with other hues is oft forgotten, but it partners
beautifully with pinks, peaches, and oranges as
well as greens and blues. Soften or intensify the
shade of yellow for a completely different vibe.
Happy Planning!

Graham took Karen out to her favourite sushi restaurant for her birthday
on New Year’s Eve, and before their food even arrived, Graham gave her
an unexpected gift: a diamond engagement ring.
The couple set a date for late summer and began searching for the
right vendors to bring their vision to life. They booked their intimate
ceremony and reception at the St. Boniface Golf Club, which can tailor fit
their banquet hall for any guest list size under 250. “We wanted a simple
and elegant ceremony with a super fun dance party to follow. Great food,
music, and an open bar were high on our priority list. At our wedding, we
saw so many of our friends and family let loose and have a blast. It was
just how we dreamed it would be,” says Karen.
The couple had no trouble choosing their photographer, Chris from
Chris Jensen Studios. “From the first moment that we met Chris, we
knew he was a great fit. He was receptive and able to offer us a package
that was affordable and suited our needs,” says the bride. And Chris
didn’t miss a beat, capturing every moment from Graham’s daughter
playing acoustic guitar before the ceremony to the couple’s surprise
choreographed dance for their entrance at the reception. “He was able
to capture all of the fun moments that we shared with our wedding party
and family, and also the special, memorable moments too,” reflects Karen.

WORD
OU’RE ENGAGED... NOW WHAT?Y
The “B” word. It takes on a
totally different meaning
when you’re planning your
wedding. That’s right...we’re
talking about BUDGET. Don’t
know how to make one?
Worried about keeping your
spending on track? Here’s
your crash course.
First things first: have the money
talk. Sit down with anyone who might
be contributing to the wedding, and
determine how much money you have
to work with. This can be awkward, but
it can save a lot of tears down the road
when you found out you've overspent
and now can’t afford the dress of your
dreams. Once you’ve got a number to
throw around, you’ll need to figure out
how to divide it up. Below you’ll find
a typical estimated breakdown for an
average wedding, but keep in mind your
wants and needs. Some couples don’t
hire a planner, so that extra 10% could
be pushed towards your photography
budget. Others don’t care to have flowers
at their ceremony, saving themselves a
few hundred dollars. Stuck? Get creative!
THE
Typical Budget Breakdown
4 0 - 5 0 % R E C E P T I O N (site, food, beverages, rentals, gratuities)
5 - 1 0 % M U S I C (ceremony, cocktail hour, dinner hour, dance)
1 0 % F L O W E R S (bouquets, boutonnieres and corsages, ceremony
decor, reception decor)
1 0 % P H O T O G R A P H Y & V I D E O G R A P H Y
(package fee, album, prints)
5 - 1 0 % AT T I R E
(his and hers)
1 0 - 1 5 % P L A N N E R / C O O R D I N A T I O N
1 0 % M I S C E L L A N E O U S
(stationery, officiant fee, favours, rings,
transportation, marriage license)
5 % C U S H I O N
Budget Tips
• Never go into a consultation with a vendor without knowing how much you’re able to
spend. Don’t withhold that information from your vendors, either—if their quote is just a
bit over your budget, they might be willing to bend some numbers for you!
• Combine things whenever possible: those cute cupcakes you’ve had on your wish list can
also make the perfect favour when they’re all boxed up!
• Shorten your reception. By starting the reception a little bit later, your bar will be open for
a shorter time, saving you money.
• Most craft stores sell prepackaged invitations that you feed through your printer at home,
and can be easily personalized with a little DIY.
• Host your ceremony and reception in the same place: not only will you cut down on travel
time and transportation costs, but your decorator and/or florist won’t need to deliver and
set up at two different locations.
• Shop sample sales or buy a once-worn wedding dress. You can find gowns in great
condition for a fraction of the cost!
• Select a venue that provides packages that include linens or centrepiece options.
• Ask your vendors for referrals. Many will have built excellent partnerships with other
wedding vendors, which may end up in you getting preferred pricing!

AVE THE DATES
During the first year they were dating,
Amanda and Mike decided to take a ride around her family’s
property on a quad, and came across a secluded woodsy
area. Being the romantic he is, Mike carved their initials into
a tree. Each dating anniversary, the couple visited the tree,
carved the year, and took photos. But in October of 2012,
Mike did something a bit different: he brought Amanda
to their tree, bent down on one knee, and popped the big
question. After an emotional “yes!” and a few tears, the
couple headed back to her parents’ house for celebration.

COLOUR OF THE MONTH
It’s so often done wrong that
many brides automatically
shy away from it. But blue isn’t
an inherently “bad” colour;
it simply needs to be styled
within a stylish colour palette
with the appropriate shades
selected, and you will find it
quite easy to avoid the tacky,
dated styles often seen.

ASFAW MALIKRAMADA VISCOUNT GORT
MEETTHECHEF
XPERT ADVICEE
Chef Asfaw Malik’s career has
been anything but mundane. Born
in Eritrea, he moved to Sudan
at a young age to study French
cuisine with the best and brightest
in Africa’s culinary scene. He was
soon hired on with a Sudanese
camp to which chefs from all
over Europe flocked to gain
international culinary experience.
When chef Asfaw came to
Winnipeg in 1984 he was snatched
up instantly by the Ramada
Viscount Gort and rose through
the ranks to head chef a mere
six years later. There, he led the
creative efforts behind their most-
requested dishes, like their famous
Chicken Viscount, and currently
oversees a staff of 25, feeding up
to 1500 mouths per night.

SOIRÉE EVENT PLANNING, ANDREA MANCINI Soirée Event Planning was founded when owner Andrea Mancini discovered passion for turning life's little details into lasting

How do I choose my colour palette? Inspiration for a colour palette can come from anywhere. Looking at bridal magazines
(such as It’s Love!) and online is a good place to start. Start with one colour you really
love and build off it. Add complementary tones and shades as well as neutrals that work
well—instead of the typical two colour combination, we actually recommend expanding
your colour palette to 5 or 6 different complementary hues. Once this is decided, bring
a visual representation (like paint chips from your local hardware store) of your colours
to meetings with your different vendors.
What should we include in our reception program? Every wedding is unique, so every program will be different. Generally they will include
the names of both sets of parents and everyone in the wedding party. You may want
to expand on this and mention your relation to your wedding party attendants whether
they are a sibling, friend, or cousin.
The order of wedding speeches and who is speaking is commonly included. We rec-
ommend not giving specific times for this portion as the actual timing is almost impos-
sible to guarantee. Including the menu is helpful to identify what the guests are being
served, and this will speed up your dinner service as guests will be able to identify any
dietary restrictions they forgot to mention.
The program is a good opportunity to explain any specific details for the evening.
If your favours have a specific significance, or if you are giving a donation to a charity
in lieu of a favour, a printed program is the perfect place to mention it. If your kissing
game isn’t the standard clinking of the glasses, feel free to give your guests direction
on how to get you to kiss.
Programs can also serve as your opportunity to preview some of the elements to
come throughout the evening. Let them know about the photo booth, candy buffet,
late night snack or live band that will be following dinner. Conclude your program with
a thank you message to your friends and family who are joining you in celebrating.
With so much input from my family and friends, I cannot
make a decision to save my life. How can I put my priorities
first without hurting anyone?
Define your must-haves and priorities from the beginning. Listen to the suggestions
and ideas of others before completely disregarding them—you never know if someone
might have a great idea that you hadn’t thought about! With an unlimited amount of
options and vendors to choose from, the possibilities can seem endless but hiring a
professional wedding planner will help you narrow down the options based on your
budget and their experience with various vendors, and will be in your corner to support
the decisions you’ve made. Finally, don’t lose perspective of what is really important:
at the end of the day it is about a celebration for you and your fiancé.

I haven’t been able
to find the reception
venue that I have been
picturing, but we have
found some wonderful
venues that just
don’t have quite the
right look. How can I
transform the space?
We always recommend
our clients work
with the décor of
their venue instead
of against it. For this
reason choose a venue
that works with your
style of wedding, be it
traditional, modern,
garden, rustic, or
vintage. Then, work to
highlight the features
you appreciate while
distracting from the
features you dislike.
Draping walls and
ceilings with fabric is
the most effective way
to transform a venue,
but not always in the
budget. Other ways
to transform a venue
include lighting, custom
linens, and flowers.

APER TRENDSPWHY WE
LOVE THIS TREND
1 Each design is unique to the couple. 2 The style is whimsical, soft, and pretty.
3 “It can be adapted to any style of
wedding. I would love to do an art deco
design completely in watercolour—
very Great Gatsby!” DESIRAE HILDEBRAND,
PAPER AIRPLANES
THE PAPER AIRPLANES PROCESS1. We start with initial ideas that the couple is looking for (colour, theme, typography style, and so on).
Once narrowed down, I sketch out a few concepts and send them over before I start laying the colour
down. After a few tweaks, we decide on the final sketch.
2. The painting begins! The design is re-sketched very lightly, watercolours are mixed, and I begin to paint.
I love watching the paint do its own thing, sort of like dancing into the design—especially when you add
more water and it spills throughout the paper leaving some parts light and other parts more vibrant!
3. Once the painting is complete, I open it in Photoshop to tweak any colours that might be a little off,
and cut apart the different designs so they can be used separately in the invitation design.
4. The paper chosen for this type of invitation is crucial—it won't look like watercolour if it's printed on
smooth, high gloss paper, so an uncoated, textured paper is chosen to give the final affect to the invitation.

Sarah and Mitchell stumbled upon a beautiful ring during some last minute Christmas shopping,
and Mitch knew he had to get it. Amidst the busyness of the season, he managed to sneak back and order the ring in secret, and thanks
to a rush order, he had the ring in hand on Christmas Eve—now, all he had to do was wait for just the right moment. Several seemingly
perfect moments arose, but each time Mitch tried to propose, something would go wrong. Eventually he popped the question at an
unexpected, yet much more sentimental moment: while the two of them were sitting in bed doing a crossword puzzle.

With eight months and a vision for a simple,
inviting, and fun-filled event, Sarah planned
a wedding that was all of the things the
couple loves. Creative invitations featured a
poster-sized illustration of Sarah and Mitchell
folded in an origami-like fashion—the perfect
indication to guests that they were in for a
fun, laid-back wedding. And the night was
just that: mason jars, coral garden roses,
vintage details, and lace filled the cozy
space, and the whirlwind reception ended
in style with a late night bonfire.
“Mairen from luckygirl was an amazing photographer. Not only does she have an uncanny ability to capture people at their most natural and to reflect the feeling of a moment, but she was easy to work with, professional and helped put both of us at ease right away.” SARAH
CLOCKWISE FROM TOP LEFT
Sarah carried a vibrant, casual bouquet of brightly
hued garden roses, craspedia, and protea; Fort
Gibraltar was simply decorated with vibrant accents
of colour; the beautiful bride poses for portraits;
handmade paper pinwheels created spotlights
throughout the reception; the groom steals a kiss;
casual floral arrangements were placed in mason
jars accented with twine.

Tips FOR GARDEN FRESH FLOWERS F R O M A C A D E M Y F L O R I S T
1 Don’t be afraid to pair yellow with another colour. Often people will choose to do yellow bouquets with navy
or grey dresses, but why not add in green, peach, or pink for a more interesting combination?
2 For this season’s popular garden style bouquets, our top tip is to use plenty of texture, bloom variety, and
greenery: ask your florist to work greens throughout the bouquet for an eye-catching design with lots of
shape and movement. This will also make a lower budget bouquet seem larger than it is!
3 Guess what? Ferns are totally making a comeback, so why not head out to your momma’s garden and pick some?
4 Garden roses are a fabulous addition to any bouquet, but if they’re not in the budget, don’t sweat it. Ask
your florist to choose large-headed standard roses and make sure they’re very open.
5 Succulents are a must-have! They’ve been big for a few years and are not going anywhere. For a unique look,
mix several varieties together. They are available in plenty of fabulous shapes, sizes, and colours.

Mismatched Bridesmaid
Dresses
75AUGUST 2013 | ITSLOVE CA
EDDING FASHIONW
Why MISMATCH?
Often to our grandmothers' chagrin, the
reasons behind mismatched dresses can
be fabulous:
• No matter the price point, you’ll find
something for each of your friends.
• Spring? Summer? Fall or winter?
Formal or casual? It doesn’t matter
when or what style your wedding is,
we promise you’ll have success choosing
the right dresses when they don’t have
to match each other.
• Each of your girls is guaranteed to
feel comfortable in her dress, because
she chose it. This gives you the perfect
opportunity to find something flattering
for each bridesmaid, no matter their
size or shape.
• In today’s world, brides no longer care
if their maids are pregnant or have just
had a baby. With matching dresses and
a baby bump, you can run into some
fitting room meltdowns.
How to MISMATCH
• Start by selecting a colour palette.
This trend works best when it’s not
one specific shade, but rather a range
of carefully coordinated hues that will
look just right together.
• Don’t forget about style: be sure your
girls know if you’re going for an easy
breezy casual wedding or a more formal
look. Along with style comes fabric: Mad
About Style chose to put their models
in dresses made of similar materials to
help create a cohesive look.
• Keeping a consistent length is a good
idea if you are a picky person, but a little
variety here and there can provide great
dynamic to your photos if you’re not.
• Accessorize! Many brides will select
coordinating accessories for their
maids if they are wearing mismatched
dresses, but this is by no means the rule.
Different accessories that highlight the
features of various dresses can be the
pop of individuality that you’re craving.

Honey, YOU SHOULD KNOW
81AUGUST 2013 | ITSLOVE CA
All things considered, Lauren and Brandon planned a darn good wedding. After all, the entire event was planned in
just 7 short months—with the groom in Thailand for a fair chunk of that time! He asked Lauren to be his bride just before stepping onto
the plane. She recalls, “I never thought he’d be able to surprise me because I knew it would be coming at some point, but he got me!”
CLOCKWISE FROM TOP LEFT Soft shades of mint and yellow paired perfectly with gray bridesmaids’ dresses and Lauren’s stunning lace shawl; a sweet shot of the
couple’s rings; freshly fallen autumn leaves made for the perfect photo backdrop; Brandon was also perfectly accessorized, with a rustic boutonniere and striped yellow tie.

The couple knew what was important to them, and ran with it: a rustic, vintage

reception themselves!), celebration of their love and families, and of course, sticking
to their budget. The end verdict? “The wedding was fun, relaxed, and perfect!”

anelle and Blake’s love story is part typical “small town,” and part “a long time coming.”
To start, they met in high school and began dating a
few years after graduation. About a year later, Janelle
made the decision to move to Winnipeg to study
graphic design, and though Blake had no idea what
he was going to do in the city, he sure knew he was
going with her. So finally, 12 years, 3 apartments, and
1 cat later, here they were: Blake popped the question
on their 12th anniversary—prompting loved ones to
exclaim, “It’s about time!” The creative couple spun the
phrase into a slogan for the wedding, adding in rustic
clock motifs throughout the many handmade details.
J
OPPOSITE, FROM TOP
Luckily for Janelle, the husband of a bridesmaid offered
to custom-make their unique ceremony backdrop,
complete with locally sourced fence posts, a vintage
dresser and window frame, and a chandelier; the
camera loves this beautiful bride; who says a little
burlap can’t dress up a wedding?
THIS PAGE, CLOCKWISE FROM TOP LEFT
Adorable cuckoo clocks adorned the ceremony
programs, and hand-made chalkboards decorated the
reception; Janelle took inspiration from Blake’s career
as a Sign Language interpreter, designing table number
cards with finger-spelled numbers; the couple took a
quick break after the ceremony for photos; Janelle got
crafty to create her own bouquets.

LOVE LIST VENDORS ACADEMY FLORIST (PG.110), PLANNED PERFECTLY (PG.110)
TO Cherish
INNIPEG REAL WEDDINGW
MICHELLE AND GREG | SEPTEMBER 22, 2012
There’s something to be said for true, honest
love. After a few shy “hellos” said in passing
at the gym where Greg was bodybuilding and
Michelle worked as a personal trainer, Greg asked
Michelle to spot him during one of his sets—
despite the fact that he was lifting twice her
bodyweight. As Michelle says, “To ‘spot’ someone
in gym language is to always have their back and
their support when the weight gets tough. To
this day, I tell him ‘I will always have your back,
my love. I will always be there for you, to support
and encourage you, just like I did when you asked
me to spot you 6 years ago.’” So when it came to
the wedding, the couple knew they wanted their
love to be at the forefront of it all, to show what
their love represents: warm hearts with an eternal
passion for each other.

“My experience with Academy Florist was unforgettable: it was like sitting down with your best friend to talk about the flowers. They were just as excited about the little details as I was. When I first saw my bouquet, it was breathtaking. It was everything I envisioned it would be and more! The entire Academy Florist team went above and beyond to make my flowers look so elegant in keeping with our vintage theme." M I C H E L L E

Terrace in the Park's food is in a class unto itself. Their famous Alaskan
crab cakes are to die for, and a top notch wine selection from
Banville and Jones has made them the recipient of numerous Wine
Spectator Awards of Excellence. Terrace offers dozens of selections

The team at Terrace in the Park are able to host ceremonies

Be sure to ask Terrace about their preferred vendors for opportunities

FROM THE CEREMONY TO THE RECEPTION, TERRACE
BRIDES ARE READY TO RAVE ABOUT THEIR EXPERIENCE:
“Our ceremony was outside on the terrace, and it was
absolutely gorgeous. It was such an amazing location
with guests seated on both sides of the pond, and it
was lush with flowers and plants to make it even more
beautiful. The food was incredibly delicious and I would
definitely recommend Terrace's menu!”

the hard wayIF YOU WANT GREAT ADVICE ON A HEALTHY, LONG-
LASTING MARRIAGE, JUST ASK A DIVORCED PERSON.
We don’t go into marriage expecting to get
a divorce, but there are too few couples who
refuse to entertain the thought of divorce being
a solution for their relational problems. A study
conducted by Dr. Terri Orbuch of the University of
Michigan’s Survey Research Centre has outlined 5
common themes underlying most divorces. What
does this mean for you? The study, which has
been ongoing for over 25 years and followed 740
individuals, shows us that there are adjustments
we can make early on in our marriages that will
help create a happy, stable relationship.

MARRIAGEADVICELEARNED
ELATIONSHIP ADVICER
107AUGUST 2013 | ITSLOVE CA
LIFT YOUR SPOUSE’S SPIRITS “DO SOMETHING TO DEMONSTRATE THAT YOUR PARTNER IS NOTICED AND APPRECIATED EVERY SINGLE DAY.” 15% of divorced individuals said they would give more “affective
affirmation” to boost their spouse’s mood: by expressing love, care,
and concern, you build trust. These can be small actions—simply tell
your wife “I love you,” or your husband that he’s a great parent. Make
the bed in the morning, or cook a special dinner. Leave a note in her
lunch, or send him a thoughtful text message.
HAVE THE MONEY TALK - OFTEN "TALK MONEY MORE OFTEN—NOT JUST WHEN IT'S TAX TIME, WHEN YOU HAVE HIGH DEBT, WHEN BILLS COME ALONG." We’ve often heard that the number one conflict in marriage is
money, and it’s true: 49% of divorced couples said that they
fought so much about money that they anticipate money will be
a problem in their next relationship, too. When you're newlyweds
this can be an especially difficult topic. Will you merge your bank
accounts or not? Does he see your credit card statements? You
should individually examine your approaches to money, and devise
a plan you can both live with. Prepare and plan ahead by building a
financial strategy and setting ground rules, and then when finances
are stressful, you’ll know how to deal with it.
FORGIVE AND FORGET THE PAST This is a hot topic for married and divorced couples. Divorced
individuals in the study who held on to strong emotions for their
ex-spouse—whether love or hate—were less healthy than those
people who had moved on emotionally. This isn’t just love or
hatred: it’s all of those little things about your partner that make
you tick, like irritation when he doesn’t do the dishes, bitterness
about her family, jealousy over past relationships. This doesn’t
mean you should sweep your feelings under the rug, but instead
learn how to discuss the problem areas of your relationship and
come up with a solution so you don’t dwell on it.
ELATIONSHIP ADVICER
he study, which has been ongoing for over 25 years and followed 740 individuals,
shows us that there are adjustments we can make early on in our marriages that
will help create a happy, stable relationship. Of these 740 INDIVIDUALS , there comes
some saddening information: 46% OF THEM DIVORCED . 210 of the divorcés shared
what they learned from their mistakes, and some good news came out of it: 44% OF
THESE PEOPLE HAVE REMARRIED, and from them comes this tried and tested advice:
LEARN TO FIGHT HEALTHILY “THERE ARE MULTIPLE WAYS OF SEEING A PROBLEM. BY GETTING YOUR PARTNER'S PERSPECTIVE, AND MARRYING IT WITH YOUR PERSPECTIVE, YOU GET THE RELATIONSHIP PERSPECTIVE."Don’t play the blame game! It’s hard not to blame, so Dr. Orbuch
recommends learning to blame the relationship, and not the
individual. Say “we” instead of “you” or “I”—by including yourself
in the problem, it will reinforce the fact that your relationship
is suffering, and you must both work at it. In the study, 65% of
divorced individuals blamed their ex-spouses, with more women
blaming an ex-husband (80%) than men blaming an ex-wife (47%).
OPEN UP The style of their communication is the top thing that divorced
individuals said they would change in their next relationship. Dr.
Orbuch recommends practicing “active listening,” in which you
reveal more about yourself rather than just the “maintenance
communication” we normally do. "It doesn't have to be emotional,"
Dr. Orbuch says. "But it should be about issues where you learn
about what makes each other tick." Help your spouse understand
you better. We are constantly changing, so conversations need to be
constantly taking place. Dr. Orbuch suggests a 10 minute rule: for 10
minutes each day, converse alone about something other than work,
the home, your relationship, the kids, your everyday lives. Dive into
the thoughts of your spouse and really get to know him or her.
Fight for your marriage. Whether you are
preparing for your wedding, are a newlywed,
or if you’ve been married for ages, make
the choice that divorce is not an option for
you. Cling desperately to your spouse and
create a healthy, happy relationship so your
marriage can thrive.
