IU-MSI STEM Initiative

• Works to increase funding for programs promoting educational equality in STEM

• Serves as the University-wide coordinator for the IU-MSI STEM Initiative and the Herbert Presidential Scholars program
• Recruits and retains students for graduate study completion at all of the Indiana University campuses, especially focused on underrepresented student populations

• Assistant Vice President for Strategy, Planning and Assessment in the Office of the Vice President for Diversity, Equity and Multicultural
• Reviews and assesses diversity strategic plans across Indiana University's campuses, and coordinates strategies ensuring OVPDEMA and the university's missions and objectives are successfully met.
• Develops new programs, assesses and evaluates OVPDEMA diversity initiatives. Benchmarks OVPDEMA as well as campus-wide diversity efforts with peer institutions across the nation.

From the IU-HBCU STEM Initiative to the
IU-MSI STEM Initiative
STEM Initiative: History• Conceived in 2006 by Indiana University’s first
African American president, Dr. Adam Herbert
• Involves both the Indianapolis and Bloomington campuses
• The first STEM Summer Scholars Institute began in 2007; ninth institute completed in summer of 2015
Partnerships with 12 Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs)
STEM Initiative: Vision• Establish long-term, mutually beneficial,
highly interactive relationships among all partner institutions resulting in:• Increasing numbers of African-American
graduate students, scholars and professionals in the STEM disciplines
• Increased research capacity through faculty collaborations
• Expanded research funding opportunities
• Enriched academic experiences through exchanges of students and faculty
STEM Summer Scholars Institute (SSI)
• 8 week summer residential experience
• 40 hours per week bench research
• Campus apartment & dining facilities
• Access to the library facilities, recreation facilities, computing systems, research labs, campus bus service,research seminars, social gatherings, etc.
