Who is Jacob Kounin?

• Most known for his two studies in the 1970’s
• Main focus was preventative discipline

• Ability to keep the lesson moving swiftly and on track.

• Also keeping the lesson on track by avoiding– Tangents– Dangles– Irrelevant information or

• Encourage Accountability– Checklists– Task cards
• Create suspense & interest in lesson
Conclusion
• Children can misbehave despite what strategies are used
• Most effective if applied in the beginning of the school year
• Especially important for first year teachers
