Today we are going to learnabout conditions for children

in Kenya and Uganda whowant to go to school.

Think about where you werethis morning

It’s very different from a typicalhome in Kenya

And a typical kitchen

And think abouthow you got to

school today

In Africa almost all children walk

have to walk to school

It can take them over an hour to

walk to school

And it can be a long way and very hot

And when they get to school the classrooms are falling apart

Children have to sit on the floorbecause there are not enough desks

Sometimes there are no classroomsso they have lessons under a tree

And if they do not have enough booksthey have to share or go without

Many children are taught inclassrooms like this

Children in Africa are desperateto go to school and learn

Irine wants to be a nursewhen she grows up

Why would it be hard forIrine to learn at school?

Lessons are cancelled and studentssent home when it rains

Hard to hear if it is windy or raining

Hard to concentrateif you don’thave a deskand a chair

to sit on

Cannot practice writing when youdo not have any books
