Dear Janssen School Community,
This is the time of year where it seems that we have more commitments
and time is a bit more hectic. We have so many things to do, yet trying
to balance our time can be a challenge. Not only are our adults impact-
ed by such a pace and relating stressors—so are our students. Such cir-
cumstances serve as a good example of why it is very important for our
staff to foster strong, positive relationships with our students.
In addition to our building goal: students, as problem solvers, will re-
flect and adjust their work in order to meet end of year learning targets,
we are intentional in promoting the social and emotional well-being of
our students. Our building goal in this area is two-fold: a) all students
have at least one person in their lives with whom they can talk; and b)
connect students at risk of harmful behaviors to support. For the first
part to this goal, our targeted group is our third and fourth grade stu-
dents. From the survey and counselor follow-ups, 99% of students do
have at least one person in their life with whom they can talk. As for
the second part to this goal, we hold weekly Pupil Services Team meet-
ings to discuss students, our school counselor works with individual stu-
dents, and we have mental health counseling once a week through the
United Way’s PATH (Provident Access to Healing) program
(information presented in November’s newsletter). If you notice any
concerns, please do not hesitate and connect with your children’s teach-
ers. We believe fostering positive relationships with our students are
necessary for their success, and we will continue to build the conditions
to support our students.
To close out 2018, I want to thank our PTO for sponsoring a well-
attended family night that included a bus tour of holiday lights, dinner,
and a dance. Their efforts result in providing fun experiences for our
students and raise money for new playground equipment. In addition, I
want to thank our Janssen staff for continually focusing on students’
needs to drive their research, collaboration, and adjustments. As par-
ents, you have entrusted us with your children’s learning and we thank
you for the opportunities to make positive impacts every day.
Finally, I wish each of our Janssen families a winter break that is filled
with family time. If you are visiting family/vacation—safe travels. I do
want our students to practice our community values every day and eve-
rywhere—being a good citizen is equally important. I am very excited
for 2019, our staff’s work, and our students’ growth.
Sincerely,
Hercules Nikolaou, Ph.D.

JANSSEN COUNSELOR CORNER
Happy December!
Life Skills Class Updates
All grade levels have been receiving lessons on protective behaviors as part of our personal safety unit. I
am hoping that after these lessons, students are more aware of ways to keep themselves safe and the
steps to take if they ever encounter a situation where they are subject to unsafe or unwanted touches, or
touches that break the touching rule. The touching rule is that no one should ever touch or ask to see
your private body parts, except to keep you healthy. The students have been doing a great job with these
sometimes uncomfortable topics. All students have also been able to name several trusted grown-ups
who they could go to for help if they were ever in one these situations, or any unsafe situation.
After break, all grades will be transitioning into lessons on understanding emotions and ways to handle
strong emotions.
It’s the holiday season...
For a season that is labeled “The most wonderful time of the year”, it can often be very complicated. The
holidays can be hectic, stressful, and even sad for some. However, expectations can often make it hard
for us to acknowledge or admit that things aren’t very holly jolly. I am attaching a link to tips for coping
with stress and depression during the holidays from the Mayo Clinic. Two of my personal favorites are
acknowledging your feelings and being realistic. I am also a big fan of simply taking a breather. Some-
times you just need a break, and that is ok.
Whatever your circumstances, my wish is that everyone gets to spend some quality, relaxing and posi-
tive time with your families and that all of our students enjoy the winter break. Be safe and we will see
you in 2019!

JANSSEN PBIS MONTHLY NEWSLETTER
Here is what is happening at Janssen this month!
Monthly Character Trait
Our character trait for the month of December is gratitude. During morning Paws and community cir-
cles in the classrooms, we are focusing on what it means to be grateful and on some things that we are
grateful for both at school and at home. We are also discussing how we can show others gratitude, espe-
cially during the holiday season.
Dog Bones
Students continue to earn dog bones by showing the Janssen Way. Students in grades kindergarten
through third grade then turn these dog bones in for a chance to win a special prize in our daily drawing.
For fourth graders we are trying out something new in the form of a PBIS store. Students are able to col-
lect their dog bones and spend them on different items in the store, which will be open during their lunch
and recess every other Friday. If this goes well, there is a possibility of extending this option to third
grade. This is to be determined.

EMERGENCY MEDICATIONS
Please be aware that emergency medications
that are provided for use during the school day
will not be accessible before or after school
hours. Parents and students must plan ahead to
have emergency medication available during
school activities such as clubs and sports. If an
emergency arises and a student does not have
their emergency medication available, 911 will
be called.
These students show an exceptional job of the Janssen Way and are role models for the other students in
our school! You can look for their MVP award on the bulletin board displayed outside the office. Way to
go!
