Seeing Christ in Others We sing ‘let the beauty of Jesus be seen in me’ and we try to effecvely preach that
‘you are the light of the world’ and that as such you should reflect the glory and image of
Christ in your life for others to see. This is so true and sums up one aspect of what I believe
that life is all about – for us, God’s people, to become more and more Christ like every day
that we live.
However, that is only one aspect of what life is about for us. Another and equally
important part of the Chrisan life is that we should be looking to see Jesus in everyone we
meet. This we are taught in Ma*hew 25:31-46 in the scene of the great judgment in which
people’s eternal desny is determined by how they did or did not show love to others be-
cause in either doing so or not doing so, they did or did not show love to Christ. I realize as
do you that this is not at all easy to do. If we are honest with ourselves, there are people
who annoy us, raise our blood pressure, make us angry, fill our hearts with malice; and when
we are dealing with them, it is really hard on us to look for or to see Jesus in them.
The Bible teaches that man is created in the image of God. This means that every
person, every single individual, who lives now or ever has or ever will live, carries something
of the image of Christ in them. It may be hard to see in some people, but it is there. When I
look, I need to look to see Jesus. While in jail for non-violent civil disobedience as part of the
Montgomery bus boyco*, Marn Luther King wrote his famous sermon “Loving Your Ene-
mies.” In it he says “we must recognize that the evil deed of the enemy-neighbor, the thing
that hurts, never quite expresses all that he is. An element of goodness may be found even
in our worst enemy…and evil in the best of us.” We tend to forget that last part, that there is
evil in the best of us, enough evil that without God’s love and forgiveness we all deserve to
be lost in Hell. I want to forget about or overlook my evil and focus on the evil of my enemy,
my agitator, my protagonist. Thus, I become blind to any goodness in them.
The truth is that we are all complex, fallible beings, capable of doing wrong to others
and to ourselves. Fear, pain, alienaon, greed, lust, envy and many other sinful moves
cause all of us from me to me to fall short of our best true selves. If we can realize this
about ourselves, perhaps we can take a step forward and realize this is true about the fail-
ures of others—even those failures that alienate us from them.
Much of the gospel is about the radical difference in how Jesus treated people com-
pared to how the Jewish leaders and even the disciples treated others. The adulterous wom-
an, the woman at the well, the sinful woman who anointed Jesus, Zacchaeus, the man born
blind, and many others are people who came into contact with Jesus and were treated with
grace and dignity rather than a judgmental aCtude. Why? The answer was in how Jesus
looked at them. As he said of Zacchaeus, “he, too, is a son of Abraham.” Jesus saw him as
created in his own image, a child of God. This is how we need to look at others because just
like us they are made in the image of God. Once we see others as “the enemy”, as
“worthless”, or as “deserving punishment”, then we become judges who also condemn our-
selves because we are deserving of the same. May God help us to see the beauty of Jesus in
everyone we meet.
