MassBioEd 3-Month Job Trend Report: January-March 2016
2
About the 3-Month Report MassBioEd produces a 3-Month Report on biopharmaceutical job trends each quarter of the year. The Report compares job listings for the most current three-month period with job listings for the same three-month period of the previous year to determine trending in job listings. About the MassBioEd Foundation MassBioEd engages teachers, inspires students, and guides the life sciences workforce. Our BioTeach program supports Massachusetts teachers as they work to engage students through lab-centered, inquiry-based learning. Our Job Trends initiative identifies workforce needs and illuminates the pathway from the classroom to careers in the life sciences. About The Digest of Biotech Jobs Trends in Massachusetts The 3-Month Report is a part of MassBioEd’s ongoing Digest of Biotech Jobs Trends in Massachusetts, which also includes Briefs and an Annual Jobs Trends Forecast. The Briefs present basic data and analysis on particular aspects of biopharma industry job trends. The initial 2015 Briefs are focused upon entry level position job trends in the biopharmaceutical industry. The objectives in publishing the Briefs is to provide basic information about job listings trends, skills required of candidates, prevalence of degree requirements for high trending occupations. The Annual Job Trends Forecast is intended to provide greater insight based on additional study in these areas. Acknowledgements The analysis found in the 3-Month Report was conducted by Mark Bruso, Research Associate, under the direction of MassBioEd Foundation Executive Director, Peter Abair. Erica Dickinson, Product Support Manager at Burning Glass provided able assistance to the MassBioEd research team in effectively using data from Burning Glass Technologies (see appendix for more information about Burning Glass Technologies). MassBio, the industry council serving the biopharmaceutical community of the Massachusetts region, provided support for this series and MassBioEd’s ongoing job trends initiative. Quarterly Highlights
The Massachusetts biopharmaceutical industry is in the midst of a prolonged expansion
cycle.
January and March of 2016 were the two highest months for job postings since the
beginning of 2014, when the data was first collected by MassBioEd.
The 3-month average for Q1 2016 was also the highest on record – with 2,643 industry job
posts recorded online during that span – significantly higher than in previous 3-month
periods.
The 12-month growth rate in job postings for the Massachusetts biopharmaceutical
industry was 37.8%.
The period studied shows an increase in job postings at every degree level requirement.
Overview
The following graph charts the 3-month “centered moving average” of the total job listings and
industry employment. A 3-month centered moving average is used to reveal if the observed data is
trending in a direction. It effectively smooths out monthly fluctuations in the employment and job
listings data. The latest industry employment data was collected in September of 2015.

3-Month Centered Moving Average of Biopharma Job Listings vs. Employment
Job Listings Industry Employment
MassBioEd 3-Month Job Trend Report: January-March 2016
4
Both industry employment and job listings are moving upward in tandem. The Bureau of Labor
Statistics, which tracks job openings and labor turnover rates at the national level (JOLTS), reports
research indicating that job openings are pro-cyclical and they are closely tied with employment
numbersi.
These data confirm that our industry has been in a prolonged expansion cycle – measured both by
employment growth and increases in job openings. The Job Opening Rate, or open jobs per those
employed in a given industry (excluding internal postings), has increased from the vicinity of the
2.5% mark in Q2 2014 to about the 3.5% mark in Q1 2016. This rise can be attributed to a range of
factors: higher quit rate (workers feel more confident that they can find a job elsewhere within the
industry), expansion within the industry, companies increasingly posting jobs online rather than
internally, improvements in identifying job listings on Burning Glass’ Labor Insight tool, or
replacement needs for an increasing number of workers permanently exiting the workforce
(retirement, parental leave, etc.). The observed Job Openings Rate for the Biotech Industry in
Massachusetts is available in the Appendix of this report.
Month-to-month analysis of job listings reveals that over the 12-month period ending in March
2016, the year-over-year growth rate was 37.8%, with the job listings increasing in every month
over the previous year.

For perspective, during that same period the year-over-year job postings growth rate for the entire
Massachusetts economy was 23.7%. The biopharmaceutical industry saw its job postings rate grow
59% faster than the state as a whole.
Using MassBio.org Job Listings data as a source, new job listings by month for the year starting in
April 2014 and 2015 increased without exception. MassBio hosts a large number of job listings,
which tend to be in STEM-related (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) job
categories or corporate operations. Burning Glass captures individual job listings from multiple
sources and has a greater capture of total job listings and types of job listings captured in its
database. The MassBio data, while presenting fewer job listings, nonetheless mirrors and
corroborates the job listing trend as presented on Page 4 using Burning Glass data.
In total, there were 8,371 new job listings posted on the MassBio.org careers page in between April
of 2015 and March of 2016. This was an increase of 2,563 job listings over the previous 12-month
mark of 5,835 new job listings – a 43% increase (greater than the 37.8% increase found using
Burning Glass data). This was a smaller year-over-year growth than our previous Quarterly Report,
which compared the full years of 2014 and 2015 in which there was a 49% increase in job listings
(compared to 36.5% on Burning Glass).

Regional Breakdown – Massachusetts
Massachusetts, like any complex economy, can be broken down into many different substrates to
produce actionable observations. We based these six geographic areas in Massachusetts on those
defined by the MassBio’s Economic Development Advisory Group as distinct sub-markets of the
Massachusetts life sciences supercluster.
We calculated the First Quarter 2015 and 2016 job listings by these regions. The Cambridge-
Boston “Core” maintained its spot as the regional leader in job listings in both Q1 2015 and Q1
2016. Approximately 56% of statewide industry job posts originating from the area.
The largest net change in job postings between the past two First Quarters occurred in the
128/Suburbs region, which experienced an approximate decrease of 40% between the two time
periods. In part, this reveals the effects of two major employers in the region at different
employment phases. Shire, which posted 186 job listings online in Q1 2015, reached hiring goals
and listed only a few jobs in Q1 2016. Biogen, which has been scaling down its Weston footprint and
growing at its Cambridge headquarters, also had a marked decline in listings in this region during
the same timeframe.
In contrast, the Worcester/I-495 region saw a sizeable increase it its share of job listings, more than
doubling the number of job listings between periods and increasing its share of total postings to
16.5% in Q1 2016 from 9.5% in Q1 2015. Sanofi Genzyme led in the region in total listings in the
period, followed by Quest Diagnostics, newly located in Marlborough,

On the following page, six charts detail the top ten most frequent job listings in each of the six
regions. These numbers are the totals for the entire industry in a given region in the First Quarter of
2016. The Location Quotient details the concentration of these positions relative to the statewide
composition during the same timeframe – every hundredth of a point above or below 1 is equal to a
higher or lower concentration of listings for an occupation of 1%. For example, Medical Scientists in
the Core region in Q1 2016 (below) had a LQ of 1.2, signifying that during that period of time the
region had 20% more Medical Scientist job listings than the state did as a whole.
Note: The larger the sample size, the better. For regions with a small number of listings, location
quotients lose meaning. As a result, we do not list the Western Mass. region because of the low
number of job posts during Q1 2016. While the number of listings is also small in the SE/South
Coast region, we do include that region in this section, as the positions listed for the region correlate
well to the types companies located there and is sufficiently indicative of the industry’s job market
in the region.

Top Occupations – By Experience Level
In the First Quarter of 2016, there were approximately 4,600 job listings that explicitly listed an
experience level required of a qualified candidate (approximately 2,000 did not specify an
experience level). The share of job listings by experience level in this period is very much in line
with earlier findings made by MassBioEd in 2015, and nearly identical to the makeup of job listings
in Q1 2015.

Top Companies by Job Listings
On the next page, the organizations with the most job listings in Q1 2016 are presented. In the
listings, we separate companies from non-profit organizations (e.g. hospitals and universities).
Note: The number of jobs that an organization will post will rise and fall according to that
organization’s business plan. A high number of listings in one quarter or year and a small number
of listings by the same organization in another quarter or year may reflect a number of different
factors, including that the organization met its hiring goals in keeping with its business plan in one
quarter and necessarily has fewer listings in a subsequent quarter. A rise or fall in the number of
job listings in one quarter should not be used as a barometer of an organization’s health. We
provide these listings for the more basic purpose of showing which companies influenced talent
supply and demand in hiring in one particular quarter.
